Fashion Bomb Exclusive Editorial: Joiee Thorpe by Dapper Afrika and Ishmil Waterman

So you guys may have noticed, but we’re starting to do more exclusive shoots! Our latest comes courtesy of photographer Ishmil Waterman and Dapper Afrika, who styled Essence Magazine Editor Joiee Thorpe in his signature in-your-face style:
We had to touch base with Joiee to see how she felt about her Dapper Afrika experience.

About how the shoot came about, she wrote, “Honestly I was walking down the street heading to a press event and Dapper Afrika stopped me to take a insta pic and we connected. A random connection meant to happen lol. Then he said lets shoot and I agreed!”

She continues, “My style is very fashion/trend driven. I am super girly one minute then a tomboy the next. I’m a stylist myself and it’s very hard for me to give someone full control over how to dress me. When I met Dapper Africa I knew that this would be extremely different from my personal style, and I was open to that.”

” He has this very eclectic vibe and I was curious enough to step out of my comfort zone. I am so glad I did! It’s very cool to see yourself through someone else’s eyes.”

In case you didn’t know, Joiee is a Brooklyn born Bombshell who always aspired to be a Fashion Editor at a Magazine.

She worked at Marie Claire, Teen People, People Style Watch and In Style before joining the team at Essence. For any young person looking to work in fashion, she says, “Fashion is super diversified now and everyone’s differences make them unique! Know who you are and go after what you want!”

Indeed. What do you think of our latest exclusive shoot?

Jenna Lyons Exits J.Crew: 5 Style Lessons She Taught Us During Her Tenure

After over twenty-five years with J.Crew, Jenna Lyons has announced that she is exiting the company and her role as its Executive Creative Director and President. Though we aren’t exactly sure what she’ll do next—perhaps her own line or heading up a major fashion house—there’s absolutely no doubt that she is a force to be reckoned with and that she made the once workwear-focused brand one of the most beloved and fashion-forward during her tenure. While we wait for her next move, we thought back on five style lessons she taught us while at the creative helm of J.Crew.

1. Never be afraid to wear neon.

Whether it’s a pair of classic pumps or a flirty dress, Lyons’s embrace of neon was a refreshing palette cleanser. Bold coral hues, electric green, impossible-to-miss pink—nothing was off limits. Bright shades became a signature of the brand no matter what the season and showed us that making a statement really is a way of life.

2. Sequins are always a good idea—for both work and play.

Fact: you should always shimmer and sparkle if possible. Sequins were standard for Lyons who would splash them across everything from timeless trousers to everyday t-shirts. And she always offset them with more pared-down pieces like utilitarian jackets and skinny denim.

3. You can wear denim on the red carpet. And whatever you want to, really.

We’ve seen style icons like Pharrell and Kanye wearing denim on the red carpet now, though Lyons has been doing it for years. At the First Monday in May World Premiere, she paired a chic cape with raw hem cropped skinnies: an effortlessly cool ensemble if ever we saw one. Denim jackets, tuxedos, and ponchos are other non-traditional looks that she has opted for at various high-fashion events. Lyons’s lesson here? Confidence and great tailoring are the major keys of looking red carpet-ready.

4. Gender shouldn’t stop you from expressing yourself through fashion and beauty.

When a J.Crew email showcased the then Creative Director and her son bonding over nail polish, Lyons became a part of the gender identity conversation that fashion is exploring in a major way today, six years later. The caption of the message read, “Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.” The polish later sold out, demonstrating that you should never let society’s definitions of masculinity and femininity define who you are and how you choose to present yourself.

5. Everyday people are the real style icons.

A post shared by J.Crew (@jcrew) on

We realize this is a bit of a play on words given the feature of Everyday People’s Saada Ahmed above, but the brand completely embraced everyday stylish women, men, and those who identify with other gender identifies as their models. That casting method has since been adopted by some major fashion brands. Inclusivity is best!

What’s your favorite Jenna Lyons style moment?

Throwback Thursdays #TBT: The Style Evolution of Cassie

We’re taking it back to 2006 for today’s Throwback Thursday, when this pretty young thing came on the scene with her smash hit “Me & U”.  And if you didn’t try to imitate her dance moves in the mirror while this song bumped through your speakers, either you’re lying or I’m fighting really hard to not be alone here.  Since then, Cassie has been been a busy bee.  From music to modeling to doing films on the silver screen, she’s definitely become one of Hollywood’s it girls.  Since the beginning, her rise to fame has always been accompanied by some killer fashion.

The New London, Connecticut native had an eye for all things stylish from the get-go.  Back then, she found her niche wearing cute minidresses that hug her petite frame.  Vibrant colors and patterned pieces were her go-to’s, especially to compliment her glorious summer tanned skin.

But a few years later, and honey, playtime was over.  Known for her cascading raven colored mane, Cassie took the bull by the horns and shaved off a third of her hair…and still slayed.  She experimented more with more masculine touches to her outfits.  In her downtime, she exudes glamorous comfort pairing sweats and heels, or sneakers and jeans with a designer bag to accessorize.  Jordans and Hèrmes anyone?

And her fur game…sickening.  If you wanted to know how to bring the heat in the middle of winter, take cues from Cassie.  She loves a good fur bolero, even if she’s just kicking it courtside at a basketball game.

And without a doubt, Cassie isn’t lacking in the sex appeal department.  She’s not shy about showing a little skin on the red carpet, but it’s always tastefully done.  She can dazzle in sequined Julien McDonald or stun in cobalt Versace.  The slay never fades, but we’re not complaining one bit.  Hell, who else can rock a neon yellow ombré bob and still look amazing?

Gorgeous, isn’t she?

So here’s to a true trendsetter and amazing style star, Cassie!  We love you and can’t wait to see what other looks you have in store for 2017!  For more, spy our gallery above of our favorite looks from Cassie.

Fashion Bombshell of the Day: Tamara from LA

Though it’s San Francisco Fashion Week here on FBD, I had to show love to Tamara, who was in attendance at Cocktails with Claire LA!

She writes, “My name is Tamara and I’m an online vintage clothing store owner, and LA based content creator for my site LilMissStyle.com.”

” I would describe my style as comfortably chic.”

” I love using a blank canvas of simple staples and dressing up my look with bold accessories, local thrifting finds, or even a bright lipstick color to help make my look my own.”

Work it! I love all your outfits, but that pink jacket is my fave!
