It looks like I’ve gone from blogger to business owner to semi professional speaker!
I’ve been participating on lots and lots of panels (full schedule coming to TheBombLife.com). This past weekend, I participated in a Dreamleapers Retreat hosted by industry maven Harriette Cole.
My panel focused on leaping for your dreams in the editorial world, and featured Teen Vogue EIC Elaine Welteroth, New York Post’s Alexa Luxury Lifestyle Magazine’s Editor David Kaufman, and Essence EIC Vanessa de Luca. And me.
The panel underscored the importance of going for what you want, regardless of what may stand in your way. Simply not taking no for an answer. Leaping for your dreams with style and grace.
Harriette had super kind words to say about her mentee, Elaine. Elaine started off as an intern and beauty editor for Ebony magazine, then went on to work as a beauty writer then beauty editor at Glamour, then Teen Vogue. She was Teen Vogue’s first African-American beauty director since 2012 and is now their first African-American Editor-in-Chief. The moves Elaine is making are unprecedented. But what Elaine has is spunk and pinache. She acted on her instincts and made things work, even in the face of challenges.
I hope that Elaine and I can show that it is possible to break into fashion and publishing as a woman of color; and that there are different routes and avenues you can take to realize your dreams. Make no excuses. Go for the gold with gumption. As Vanessa de Luca said, you will get there eventually.
We’ll be doing Monday Motivation every Monday moving forward.
What do you think?
Mother’s Day is today! Motherly advice and wisdom is the gift that keeps on giving, so in the spirit of the holiday, we decided to tap some of our favorite fashionable moms to get their advice on life and style.
Read below from a few of our faves:
What is the best advice you’ve ever received from your mom? “My mother was an amazing entrepreneur. I learned my entrepreneurship from her. She told me, ‘While you’re young, go hard. When you get older, and you take a loss, it’s harder to bounce back.’ As an entrepreneur, your business is all on you. Your livelihood is dependent on you. Your losses are harder than if you were working for someone else. I used to take so many risks. I’m way more intentional now. I’m just wiser in every aspect of my life.”
What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever received from your mother? “My mom taught me how to make it my own. She was very savvy and fashionable when I was young. She was a little more over the top than me (floor length furs). She was very flashy. I’m a tad bit more [subdued]. I think because I was a stylist, I immersed myself in wardrobe, and I think I’m over it. She taught me how to make things my own. You don’t have to spend crazy amounts of money on brand name clothes. If you’re fresh, you can take whatever and make it fab. “
What life advice do you give to your child/children? “I tell my daughter to just always be herself. Always be authentic no matter what. People respect that. When you’re always yourself and confident in who you are, you have nothing to prove. Do you. Don’t get caught up. Man up. Be strong, be independent, be yourself, and don’t worry about what people think about you. Be you.”
What fashion advice/mantra do you abide by? What style advice do you offer to your child/children?
“Dress for your body type. Don’t follow trends. Fit is the most important thing in terms of making something your own. When something fits perfectly [you look great]. Instead of dressing trendy, dress for your body type. You’ll always look stunning no matter. “
What is the best advice you’ve ever received from your mom? “The best advice my mom has given me in the past 2-3 years would be : There’s always tomorrow. The downs , the hardships , struggles, those things may be happening today , but tomorrow it might be a peak . So never get up caught in today’s valleys when tomorrow can be full of peaks and success stories.”
What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever received from your mother? “My mom is very conservative , so she always says ‘you can be sexy without selling sex’, and to make sure that ‘the clothes I’m wearing is from the rooms I want to be in'”
What life advice do you give to your child/children? “Be unique, a leader, and it’s super important to be the best you, YOU can be . No one else can be you.”
What fashion advice/mantra do you abide by? What style advice do you offer to your child/children? “Because they’re young, I want them to create the styles, create the moments and vibes and not get caught up in what everyone else is wearing ; once again, be an individual. A cool little story , Omere wanted to wear all the super heros one day for school, so he wore a Batman Hoodie, Spider Man Shirt , Ninja Turtle shorts and Garfield shoe…and he went to school so happy because he was the best, most powerful super hero. And THAT was perfect for me and him.”
What is the best advice you’ve ever received from your mom?
“My mother did not give me a lot of advice, however she did something more powerful: she modeled being a kind and giving person. She makes everyone feel loved and important. She made birthdays and holidays feel special! She is so thoughtful. My mother is also a great cook and loves to feed everyone! She makes you feel welcome and she connects in a way that you always remember. My home has become filled with the same energy. My children’s friends always come over and have a great time.”
What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever received from your mother?
“I had a mind of my own, a sort of fashion rebel.. however, I learned to embrace our Japanese culture through wardrobe from my Mom. I have been wearing Kimonos my whole life! They are even part of the decor in my home. “
What life advice do you give to your child/children?
“I have taught my children that they can accomplish anything they desire. The only thing standing between them and their dreams is mindset. A lot of my advice and support comes from an empowering and spiritual place. I encourage my children to enjoy the journey, have patience, and to be kind to themselves and others. My children know that I am their biggest supporter and I will always be there, whether it is to wipe tears or hold their hand, whenever they need me! We have a no judgment zone. I teach them to be clear on their intention, learn, and grow through all experiences. Life is a rendezvous!”
What fashion advice/mantra do you abide by? What style advice do you offer to your child/children?
“My fashion advice is always to embrace who you are, and be confident in everything they want to create. That is truly being fly. I teach my children that their unique style is their way of making the world interesting and colorful.”
What is the best advice you’ve ever received from your mom? “The best advice I ever received from my mom is learning how to balance my career and my family. My mother was a working mother as well. She always tells me that when you are feeling overwhelmed in life, to prioritize your family and the rest will fall into place. I have definitely found that to be true.”
What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever received from your mother? “My mother gave taught me how to mix highs and lows. She taught me about the right pieces to buy higher end and what you should buy at a bargain and mixing the two to create a look.”
What life advice do you give to your child/children? “For my 6 year old daughter Charly, I try to instill in her to be proud of who she is and stand firm in her integrity. I feel like self doubt and insecurities start at a young age so my goal is to combat that as early as possible and make her feel proud of the things that make her unique.”
What fashion advice/mantra do you abide by? What style advice do you offer to your child/children? “#1. You can never go wrong with black #2. Be true to your own personal style. Never be so caught up in “trends” that you lose sight of your own style voice. I love giving my older daughter the opportunity to express herself through her wardrobe. She loves dresses & bright colors. However, I step in from time to time to show her how to make it cohesive.”
What is the best advice you’ve ever received from your mom? “To take things day by day, appreciate and live in each moment fully. She actually gave me this advice in reference to when I was pregnant; I ended up applying it to my life as well. It helps make me a lot more grateful for everything. And to drink lots of water and wear sunscreen every day for the fountain of youth.”
What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever received from your mother? “That styles always come back around, so when I’m looking for inspiration when designing or dressing to look back through the different eras and add a modern twist.” What life advice do you give to your child/children? “To be herself and love who she is :)”
What fashion advice/mantra do you abide by? What style advice do you offer to your child/children?
“My design partner Candice Cuoco always says she doesn’t design clothes for girls to feel pretty, but rather for them to feel powerful! I love that and totally agree we should be dressing to conquer! My daughter is only 3 and already into picking out what she wants to wear , so I let her have fun with her fashion. There was actually a day she went back and forth with me because she didn’t want to wear a fringe vest I picked out for her, she wanted to wear a long cardigan and faux fur coat and it actually looked pretty cute! Her latest thing is dressing up like her favorite princesses and super heroes”
So cute!
These kernels of wisdom and pictures are so touching! I love it!

One of the best perks of running Fashion Bomb Daily is getting to meet and sit down with amazing people! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of chatting with reality starlet, fashionista, author, and Cubana Juju about her book, Secrets of a Jewel.
The fictional book seeks to impart key life lessons via a series of short stories. I haven’t started diving in yet, but I’m sure it’s a good read!
Aside from book chat, Juju and I talked about her favorite products (Burt’s Bee’s lip balm), work out tips (it’s all about what you eat!), and how to maintain a high profile relationship (keep your private moments PRIVATE!). You guys also engaged us with great questions. See the Facebook video here:
During our chat, she also revealed that Love and Hip Hop hasn’t changed her life much. Because she’s friends with Yandy and Kimbella, going on set is a joy. She just stays far away from the drama and has a good time.
Though I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to video, IG Live was a fun experience. Maybe every Friday at 5pm, we can interview someone cool? Hmm…
If you tuned in, what did you think of our IG and FB live videos?

Rihanna and Kelly Rowland beamed in a sumptuous fur and embroidered LWD, respectively. The epitome of #blackgirlmagic ok?
Jhene Aiko and Big Sean were easily the best dressed couple of the night. Her dress was perfection.
Charlize Theron was fierce in all-black and chic aviators. Hot!
Solange Knowles took to the stage for an unforgettable performance—a vision in all-white. I live for her.
Demi Moore mixed textures in a classic black and white ensemble.
Jaime King and Miranda Kerr let their statement-making dresses do the talking for the evening. Gorgeous frocks, no?
Brie Larson slipped on a New Look-inspired blazer and a colorful midi skirt, while a classic LBD was on the style agenda for Kate Bosworth.
Nick Jonas kept it cool in black, navy, and white separates. He has great style!
Olivia Palermo accented her simple ‘fit with layered chokers, studded booties, and a red shoulder bag.
