Beauty Crush Wednesday: Naomi Campbell

As the saying goes, “In fashion, one day you’re in, and the next, you’re out.”  But this week’s beauty crush has, is, and will always be in.  We all know how fleeting the career lifespan of a model can be, even if she was one of top earners.  But since being discovered at the age of fifteen, and recently celebrating her 47th birthday, Naomi Campbell continues to dominate the modeling world with a walk as legendary as her name.  Not many can accomplish all this British icon has.  Countless magazine covers and editorials, runway shows, and ad campaigns still keep her the working model she is, but there’s more to Naomi than meets the eye.  Which probably explains why she’s still so sought after. Naomi’s career sky-rocketed during the days of Gianni Versace.  Being one of his muses, she sashayed down the catwalk of every show of his during his lifetime, often walking hand-in-hand with him at the end of his collections.    Soon before long, she became one of the most sought after models of the 90’s, often walking for Azzedine Alaïa, Chanel, and eventually becoming a regular on the Victoria’s Secret runway.  With access to high-end designers and their fabulous garb, Naomi’s style has always been flawless.  But great style is only half the package, as Naomi’s beauty completes it.  Though her hair has seen many changes for shows and editorials, she often kept a middle part with waist length hair, either curly or straightened.  Naomi did have a heavier brow in the nineties, making her appear more sultry.     She still adores the long, flowing mane she’s become known for, but Naomi loves to switch things up every now and again.  From bangs to a cute crop, she enjoys keeping onlookers on their toes with a change.  Her makeup is often soft and subtle these days, with a slight flush to the cheeks and a nude gloss.  But sometimes, she enjoys kicking things up a notch with a colored lip.   We could go on and on about Naomi’s external beauty, but it only scratches the surface of how dynamic a woman she’s become.  She, along with Bethann Hardison, have fought tirelessly for more black models to be featured on the runways and in fashion magazines.  She’s fought for equal pay and the abolition of racial bias in the modeling industry, which was highlighted in an open letter she, along Hardison and Iman, penned to the governing bodies of global fashion week shows, naming all the designers who didn’t use black girls during their fall 2013 runway shows.  Outside of fashion, Naomi has been racking up roles to perfect her pretty impressive acting chops.  From The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air era to present-day Empire, American Horror Story: Hotel, and Star, she’s proven she’s here to conquer the acting world as well.

For as much as she’s been afforded during the span of her career through sheer hard work, passion, focus and dedication, she often says she feels a civic responsibility to give back.

She established the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund during a benefit Versace presentation at Nelson Mandela’s presidential estate.  Her charity work through her yearly Fashion For Relief fashion show has raised millions since its inception to aid in natural disaster recovery efforts and AIDS research.Naomi has given the world so much more than a fierce picture in a magazine or a glide down the runway than no one can imitate.  She has bridged the gap through fashion and charity, and remains a vocal opponent to those who won’t recognize the equity and beauty in black models.  For that, we tip our hats to Naomi Campbell.  She has paved the way for models like Chanel Iman and Jordan Dunn and will always deemed an inspiration for little black girls who want to take on the industry.

On the Scene: The Beguiled 70th Annual Cannes Film Festival Premiere with Jasmine Tookes in Georges Chakra Couture, Fan Bingbing in Valentino, Maria Borges & Olivier Rousteing in Balmain, and More!

More Cannes looks are here! One of our favorite designers and a slew of supermodels and actresses took to The Beguiled Premiere in showstopping looks that were some of our favorite from the festival yet.

Check out the ‘fits in 3…2…1…

Jasmine Tookes’s Georges Chakra Couture lavender one-shoulder gown was the height of sophistication.

Fan Bingbing was the lady in red, clad in an off-the-shoulder Valentino cape gown. She’s always flawless!

Maria Borges was pretty in pink—slipping on a sheer ribbed Balmain design with a feather hem. What a beauty.

A slew of Balmain beauties were on the red carpet, along with Olivier Rousteing himself! He added his signature black suede boots to an expertly-tailored tux.

Neelam Gill shimmered and sparkled in a sequin plunge look from the iconic French fashion house, with a sultry thigh-high slit. Ravishing, am I right?

Doutzen Kroes channeled the ice princess we all wish to be in a silver embellished, long-sleeve gown from the brand.

Lara Stone’s black getup was similar to Maria’s in design. But no less perfect, of course!

Irina Shayk’s incredible figure was on display yet again. Her long-sleeve, high-neck glossy black sheer gown cinched her waist with a wide belt.

Elle Fanning served up major princess vibes in a strapless lavender Rodarte tulle confection. The true belle of the ball!

Izabel Goulart looked every bit the supermodel in a high neck, long sleeve sheer Roberto Cavalli design, with light embroidery and allover crystals and beading. Total knockout!

Cindy Bruna dazzled in a pink embellished Georges Hobeika halter gown with cutout detailing. Another flaw-free look from the stunner.

Elsa Hosk had a real-life Cinderella moment in an off-the-shoulder blue Alberta Ferretti, full-skirted gown.

Liu Wen chose a long-sleeve red slit gown with a black contrast floral print.

Hailey Baldwin’s check print, strapless Ralph & Russo look was an unexpected, but lovely choice!

Are you feeling the screening’s looks?

Another fête at Cannes! Stars flocked to DeGrisogono’s ‘Love On The Rocks’ party in flirty accents, statement-making dresses, mini-length frocks, and low-cut necklines.

Let’s get into the celebration’s ensembles!

Rita Ora was daring in a navy ruffle off-the-shoulder Ulyana Sergeenko Couture dress with sheer sleeves, a mini length, and low-cut square neckline. Hot!

Hailey Baldwin sizzled in an embellished Roberto Cavalli Couture dress with a curve-hugging fit. This was fab.

Maria Borges was a vision in a strapless embellished Georges Hobeika gown. She’s stunning!

Cindy Bruna smoldered in a black draped, Redemption tuxedo-inspired piece with a thigh-high slit. Gorgeous, no?

Swedish-Thai model Praya Lundberg shimmered and sparkled in a silver fringe Galia Lahav design. So beautiful!

Elsa Hosk stunned in a sheer embellished Alberta Ferretti cape gown. I can’t get enough of this dress.

Sara Sampaio was a blue dream in an ethereal Elie Saab Couture look with a sheer bodice.

Jessie J kept it simple yet sexy in a $1,150 Hamel Black Cutout Gown. Nice to see her back in action!

Tina Kunakey fluffed her gorgeous ‘fro in a floral print Blumarine dress. I’ve loved seeing her werk it at Cannes!

Using Video Tutorials To Sell Makeup Online

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a moving picture will multiply that value by a factor of ten. There is no better tool for demonstrating complex procedures than video. Viewers can watch a clip all the way through to get an overall understanding, then pause and go back to focus on steps they didn’t quite understand. This capability makes using video tutorials to sell makeup online particularly effective.

Know Your Customer

Before you start making them though, you should take some time to get to know your audience. When you’re talking to teens who are just starting out in the world of cosmetics, you’ll need to explain things in a bit more detail, while keeping your videos colorful, fun and briskly paced. Conversely, when you’re marketing to a more mature woman you’ll achieve more success with a more conservative approach. Similarly, the models you feature should be reflective of your key demographic. It’s hard to convince younger women your product is for them if you’re showing them people who look like their moms. Similarly, if you want an older woman to take your product seriously, featuring a teenager will have little resonance.

Before and After Shots

Once of the most effective tools to include when producing video tutorials to sell makeup online is the before and after shot. Opening each training clip with these two perspectives is a good way to get viewers engaged. Remember, we’re living in an age of instant gratification. When you show the viewer the ultimate result first, they’ll be intrigued to learn how to get there. With that said, anything over three minutes is going to start feeling long, so make sure you break the procedure down into steps capable of being demonstrated in three minutes or less.

Manufacturer Produced Videos

Most of the larger cosmetics companies like Luvo Store have demonstration videos. These are generally high quality and well produced, so they’re a good way to introduce video to your site. However, they are also usually very slickly produced, so they may not have the same resonance as one of the methods discussed below. Still, they can be an effective starting point while you ramp up a collection of more organic clips.

Partner With Key Influencers

If your budget is tight and you can’t afford to produce your own videos, scour YouTube for good ones covering the products you carry by key influencers who fit your demographic. Offer to partner with their producers to promote their videos on your site. This will drive more traffic to their productions, which will translate to greater interest for them on YouTube. This strategy has the added advantage of drawing their followers to your site, which gives you instant credibility with their audiences.

Solicit Quality User Videos

Every marketing course emphasizes the value of word-of-mouth advertising. User-produced videos are perfectly suited to accomplishing this. If you curate carefully, you can get clips that look homemade enough to have credibility, but are also produced well enough to communicate effectively. You can hold weekly contests on your site for the best “Tips & Tricks” videos and give the winners a gift certificate or some other valuable incentive.

Whatever method you choose to use video tutorials to sell makeup online, the most important thing is for your customer to see herself reflected in your choices. Remember, the main goal of makeup is to help the user feel better about her appearance. Anything you do to make your videos support this will add to their effectiveness.
