Real Style: The National Urban League Conference

The annual National Urban League Conference is taking place in St. Louis Missouri, with a mission to empower the community and #SaveOurCities. The inspiring event is a great opportunity to network and learn how each member can be of service both locally and nationally.
Toyota invited us to come to cover the event and also uncover the style of a few chic attendees.
Take a look:

Kim Blackwell is an executive we all should aspire to emulate! In addition to owning PMM Agency and being one of the top women in PR and marketing, Ms. Blackwell is always super fly. Yes to this head-to-toe Gucci ensemble!

Inside the convention center, we stopped Gallvin, who stood out in yellow frames and a shaved hairstyle.

Courtney was summery and fresh in a striped crop top, maxi skirt, and platforms.

Most attendees come in business casual looks, as modeled by this young lady in all white and nude pumps.

Lastly, this fly fashionista was stunning in an orange dress and multicolored sandals.
That’s all for now! I’ll be signing books today starting at 3 at the Toyota Camry booth! Be sure to stop by and get you copy of The Bomb Life!

Throwback Thursdays #TBT: The Style Evolution of Queen Latifah

The nineties birthed hip-hop legends, and this week’s throwback is counted among the bunch.  She may no longer spit a dope rhyme on wax, but when you’re a queen, you tend to have a lot on your plate.  From the days of “UNITY”, an anthem written as a call for women to demand respect for themselves and for each other in the face of misogyny, to her role as Khadijah James – college educated, female editor in chief of FLAVA Magazine on hit sitcom Living Single, Queen Latifah has conquered it all.  Music, television, and a robust film résumé boasting her range as an award-winning actress in drama and comedy speak volumes.  She’s gone on to produce not only her own films and television shows, but also a clothing line for plus-sized women with HSN, and the Covergirl Queen Collection with makeup giant, Covergirl.  This speaks to the growth in her career as an entertainer, and her style has definitely mirrored each stage.
During the aughts, Queen Latifah’s style was as in your face as her songs.  Brightly patterned button downs, necklaces adorned with wooden ornaments of the continent of Africa, and her signature crowns made her stand out.  But she never wanted it to get lost on you that she is a strong black woman with a lot to say.
And who could forget those Living Single days?  Khadijah James loved some tan suits and college sweatshirts.

But as with time, fashions must change, and did they ever for Queen.  These days, a trendy military jacket or blazer paired with jeans and a fierce boot hit the mark for a perfect daytime outfit.

Jumpsuits and pantsuits offer a more polished look for nighttime events that don’t call for too much fuss.

But it’s not all boots and pants for Queen.  A good minidress never hurt anyone, whether color-blocked, blood red or covered in sequins. Whatever the occasion, she always makes the right pick and lets the curves come out to play.
And her gowns…flawless.  From a shoulder-bearing embellished white Christian Siriano number to a sexy, yet glamorous pewter Badgley Mischka asymmetrical dress, no expense is spared when it comes to red carpet glamor.

Here’s to a woman who not only transcends what it means to be full-figured and fabulous, but also emphasizes the importance of female empowerment.  Queen Latifah has always been unafraid to speak her mind through her style, lyrics, and in business.  She continues to break down barriers in the world of entertainment and always makes it her mission to make women of color a part of every conversation.  And for that, we salute her!

Fashion Bomb Daily EIC Claire Sulmers Inspires Queen Latifah’s Character ‘Sasha’ in Girl’s Trip Movie

Film Title: Girls Trip
signature-claire-sulmers-1

So, have you seen Girls Trip? The fun movie follows four friends played by Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and Tiffany Haddish, who reunite for a weekend of fun during Essence Music Fest.

Queen Latifah’s character, Sasha, is a gossip blogger, looking for her next big scoop so that she can please her advertisers. Costume designers Danielle Hollowell and Provi Fulp looked to ME to inspire the Queen’s style!

They told the Hollywood Reporter, “We looked at Claire Sulmers from Fashion Bomb Daily. We wanted Sasha to be fashion forward, which a lot of times, for plus-size women, it’s hard to pull off. Every trend is not for every body type, but it can be if it’s done correctly, and Danielle really wanted to capture Sasha in that light and make sure she mirrored Claire, who’s a very curvy girl. Claire always celebrates that she can wear a lot of the trends, so that was our muse.”

First of all, OMGoodness. 2nd of all, OMG.

Do y’all know I literally write as if noone is watching? Yes, I see the numbers, but they don’t translate in my head. I always assume noone is reading out there, and definitely, noone is checking for my style!

Yes, I run a fashion blog, but I consider myself more of a writer than a style maven. I do get lots of love on the style tip, I’ve just never been told that I inspire a whole character’s style! How cool!

At any rate, as I transition over to Hollywood, I am getting the typical pressure to lose weight. I am working out and getting healthy, yes, but there’s something to be said for both inspiring fictional characters and real women to embrace their curvy shape and wear trends with confidence!
Slay on, Queen!
Wha do you think?
Love & Light,
