Top 5 Spring 2018 Trends (What They Are and How To Wear Them): Windbreakers, Bright Colors, Tulle, and More!

Spring is in the air!  Okay, not quite (depending on what part of the world you’re in)…but the trends are definitely floating around the fashion atmosphere.  From windbreaker jackets to popping colors, Spring 2018 is looking kind of exciting and vibrant for us style lovers.  Without further ado, let’s delve into the top five spring 2018 trends and how to rock them.

Windbreakers

When the P. Diddy and Mase music video era went out the door you probably assumed their colorful anorak jackets left too, right?  Wrong!  The casual, 90’s staple made its return on many spring 2018 runways, and fashion lovers and celebrities are definitely embracing it.

As seen on the Public School Spring 2018 runway:

How to wear it:

It’s always a smart move to abide by the rules of Rihanna’s style book.  Take a fashion risk and wear your windbreaker as a dress like the Bad Gal did in this Fenty Puma jacket.  If your windbreaker isn’t long enough, throw some cut-off shorts or distressed denim underneath and pair it with your most fierce booties.

Keep it casual like Malia Obama did in her windbreaker jacket.  A pair of sneakers and comfy jeans blend perfectly with this cozy jacket.

Tulle

Twirl, and twirl!  Tulle is back on the fashion map, and it’s not just the puffy skirts that are being worn.  For this spring season, the flouncy material is showing up on gowns, skirts, and even tops as seen on the runway for Jason Wu‘s Spring 2018 presentation.

As seen on the Antonio Marras spring 2018 runway:

How to wear it:

How precious is this tulle, Prada gown on Yara Shahidi?!  Instead of the usual short, tulle skirt – wear it subtly on a gown or over some jeans for your next soiree.

Choose the simple route as Draya did and wear your tulle skirt over a plain bodysuit or tank top.

Popping Colors

Neutral colors?  Where they do that at? This Spring, it will be all about bright colors.  Grab those hot pinks, electric yellows, and bold orange colors from the back of your closet and be prepared to rock them all season long.

How to wear it:

Mix and match your colors!  Pair your bright hues with other bold colors like Kelly Rowland did in this Off White dress and red, ankle-strap Ade Samuel heels.

Give the old black power suit a break and opt for a hot pink one!  Lala worked this Altuzarra pantsuit and showed us that sophistication comes in all colors.

Mixed Prints

Clashing prints is they way to go for this spring season. This trend has been around for a few years, and it’s transcending through the fashion times.  Instead of mixing vertical and horizontal stripes, throw on a floral print with an Aztec print.

As seen on the Mary Katrantzou Spring 2018 runway:

As seen on the Emporio Armani spring 2017 runway:

As seen on the Temperley London spring 2018 runway:

How to wear it:

When mixing prints first became a trend, there was an art to executing it.  This Spring, mixing prints has become an adventure and almost anything goes!  Tracee Ellis Ross shows us how it works in her Duro Olowu ensemble.

When it comes to mixing prints, Solange is a great guide to follow.  She shows us that the art to pulling this fad off is color scheme and confidence.

Sheer Textures

Let it all hang out….literally.  Gone are the days where our undergarments are hidden.  Exposing it all through sheer tops or dresses is the new conservative for Spring 2018.

As seen on the Oscar de la Renta Spring 2018 runway:

As seen on the Mansur Gavriel spring 2018 runway:

As seen on the Jeremy Scott spring 2018 runway:

How to wear it:

If you’re in doubt about showing too much skin with the sheer trend, pick an ensemble boasts embroidery like Kerry Washington did in this standout Dolce & Gabbana gown.  It covers the main parts while at the same showing just enough skin.

The sheer trend doesn’t require you to rock it from head to toe. Wear it just as a top like Olivia Culpo did in this Carmen March look.

There you have it — five fashion trends you can add to your wardrobe this Spring.  Which will you be trying?

Beauty Bomb: The Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing Wigs

*This is a reprint of an article published in 2012

Wigs are no longer just your Auntie Maude’s little secret tucked away deeply on a wig head on her nightstand. In the last decade more and more women are embracing the type of quick versatility that comes with a wig, but it seems as if some ground rules need to be set.
So here is a list of wig do’s and don’ts for every wiggy to follow:

Do!

Don’t wear a wig straight from the package.
Do take it to a hairstylist to have it cut into a shape and style that suits your face (yes, even the $20 synthetic ones from the beauty supply).

Do get the most natural looking wig as possible in a modern style.
Don’t go for outrageous colors and be very careful with retro styles—unless you’re Nicki Minaj or a former Supreme.

Don’t

Do go for a natural looking hairline.
Don’t do the crescent moon hairline. At all. Let your forehead be great.

Don’t

Don’t go too bulky at the crown. It’s like wearing a shirt that says “Hey, I’m wearing a wig”

Don’t

Do go age-appropriate. Sure, short wigs are fun but can make your average 21 year old look 57.

Don’t

Do leave the lace fronts to the professionals. Even celebs with their glam squads get lace front wigs wrong, so leave it alone if you’re not 100% sure of what you’re doing. It’s okay. We can’t win them all.

For the love of your edges, don’t be a frequent user of wig glue.

Do!

Do try a half-wig. They’re easier to pull off since some of your own hair is exposed, just make sure the texture matches your natural hair.

Do!

Do brush out the curls on a curly wig with a paddle brush for a more realistic look.

Do!

Do help keep your wig’s shape by keeping it on a wig head.

Do keep your natural hair smooth and flat underneath and covered with a wig cap.

ATL hairstylist du jour Derek J sat down with Jet magazine back in September to give even more tips. Check it out:
Can you give us one of your wig secrets?
“The first thing you want to do is shampoo it before you start wearing it. When you buy a wig, it has that shiny look that says ‘I’m a wig.’ It’s a dead giveaway to any kind of fake hair. If it’s synthetic, you can use dish detergent and condition it with fabric softener. It’s a fabric so if you shampoo it like it’s real hair, it won’t work correctly. Let it hang to dry and it will look fabulous. If it’s a human-hair wig, use a wig shampoo and conditioner and let it hang to dry.”

What’s a big mistake women make?

“Most women wear wigs too long. If it’s synthetic, change it at least once a week. I mean it’s a $20-$30 wig! Change that thing. Wear it for a week, at the most, two.”

Do women do crazy things with their wigs?

“I’ve seen people trying to jump in the pool and they have the wig all pinned up because they want people to believe it’s their hair. stop pretending. People know it’s a wig and it’s ok.”

Do you guys have anything to add?
