Ask Claire: How Do You Stay Optimistic with Fashion Bomb Daily Down? 5 Ways I Stay Positive in Dark Times

Today, we have an “Ask Claire” Query! @Zudoaririkameishi types, “If It’s not too much to ask, with the removal of FBD, how do you stay motivated with such a big piece of yourself and brand being taken away? Major love and peace to you Miss Sulmers!”

Major Peace and Love to you! I’ll be honest, it’s been a REALLY tough month. An issue I thought could be resolved in a week or so is dragging on, and a major part of our business as we know it has been put on pause, beholden to the whims of someone with seemingly low morals and no human compassion. Why this situation is so difficult is beyond me, but in life, you will encounter hardships. Here’s how I deal:
1. Reference prior instances of adversity and reflect upon how I survived + the major lessons learned.

If you read The Bomb Life, you’d remember a story of a colleague from my first job, who made being there so uncomfortable that I fled to Paris to pour energy into Fashion Bomb Daily (I ended up interning for Paris Vogue and kicking off my career in fashion in earnest). I also tell a story of a blog bully who did everything in her power to ruin me (but didn’t succeed). In each instance, I gritted my teeth through it, thinking ‘Why Me?” But the end result was always the same: The enemy scuttled away to the shadows to lead a relatively miserable life, and I was forced, like a stone under pressure, to turn into a diamond. Though each situation was hard to go through at the time, I now use them as my biggest lessons on how to persevere against adversity. At whatever level you ascend to, there will be some nasty Nancy there trying to throw salt on your game! Stay gracious. Their abhorrent behavior will come back and bite them in the butt one day. Believe in Karma. And know that when Jesus says yes, nobody says no. Which leads me to…

2. Faith

My spiritual foundation serves as a MAJOR source of inspiration and positive affirmation. Rely on faith, not your understanding. GOD has a major plan for you that you may not see at the point. Remain hopeful for a brighter day. Listening to sermons by everyone from T.D. Jakes to Deepak Chopra has been extremely key in me keeping an upbeat mindset.

3. Friends & Family

You need a support system to listen to you complain or to brainstorm your next move. Lean on them in your time of need.

4. Moving on and Pouring Energy into New Projects

Since FBD has gone, I’ve poured more energy into my personal brand and produced 3 of my most ‘liked’ pictures in 2 years in the past week. I’ve also kick started e-commerce, something that has been simmering on the back burner for quite some time. Maybe this lull signals a shift–it also encourages me to come up with new sources of revenue since one of our major streams has been temporarily shut off.

5. It could always be worse

My feed has been populated by posts on people committing suicide, battling cancer, or being battered by police. A social media page shutting down doesn’t hold a tea candle to death, disease, or violence! At the end of the day, I am healthy, I am happy, I am sane. I have great friends and family– I have so many things going for me. We still have our events, we still have our website, we still have so many ways to reach out and communicate with you guys. All is not lost, and life is still great!

This battle with Instagram might last a little longer than anticipated…in the meantime, we will expand upon new projects, and when it all comes back, we will be better than ever!
In this downtime, so many blessings have come my way. If you are a good person and do your best to always do the right thing, you will never lose.
I will not lose.
Love & Light,

*To film a documentary, I wore a pink House of CB suit and a pink top. Someone said I should never wear it again, but I love it!

***An excerpt from a previous post, entitled, On Defeating Your Enemies:

An enemy might try to bring you down, but you won’t stay down for long.
An enemy might try to destroy what you created, but they aren’t that powerful. Push forward.
While they’re obsessed with ruining you, they’re not working to improve their own situation, and they’ll ultimately ruin themselves.
And if you pay them no mind, and keep doing what you’re supposed to do, you will WIN.

I haven’t won YET, I still have a ways to go and millions to collect (hello!).
But if there’s anyone negative in your life, pray for them, kill them with kindness, and keep on doing YOU. The cream will rise to the top eventually. It always does.

Sex and the City: A 20 Year Old Fashionable Love Affair

At the ripe age of 16 when denim skorts and clunky JC Penney boots were the objects of my style affection, I accidentally stumbled upon a world that would impact my life for years to come.  Having just coaxed my mother out of a Jessica McClintock dress for the prom on top of proudly securing a Clueless movie fan club (self-enlisted) membership, I figured I knew pretty much everything there was to know about fashion.  I was wrong.

Sitting alone in the living room of my parent’s house one Saturday evening scrolling through the television channels for something to watch, I was prompted by a spirit (must have been the fashion gods) to go against my mother’s “no HBO” rule.  I slyly turned the television to the adult station where I came across four nicely dressed ladies, in a restaurant or bar, enjoying what seemed to be tasty drinks while examining the peculiar behaviors of men – my channel surfing came to a halt.  The more I watched, the more I was entertained.  Here in the TV screen were lively, independent thinking women who had great careers, carried meaningful discussions, lived colorful lives in NYC, wore fashionable threads, and defied society’s dating rules.  I was in love.

After that particular Saturday in 1998, I pledged allegiance to Sex and the City and watched it every chance I got.  The salsa theme song for the show was like my call to worship.  Whenever I heard that music, I stopped whatever I was doing and dove to the nearest television set for my blessing.  Giving up an hour on my Saturday evenings for the show was a small feat, for in exchange I was motivated to go after my dreams and make writing my occupation as Carrie did. I was determined to be career-driven like Miranda, hopeful like Charlotte, and liberal like Samantha.  Sex and the City was my premonition of a world I had yet to discover but later would.  It allowed me to dream, and it educated me on valuable things like Manolo Blahniks and the importance of investing money in things such as your wardrobe and martinis which will surely bring you great joy later on in life.

In a time where the norm is witnessing women pull each other’s hair and yell obscenities at one another on television, I long for fashionable shows like Sex and the City and Girlfriends and hope that television can go in that direction again someday.  Until then, binge watching reruns will suffice.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sex and the City, check out a few throwback fashion moments from the show below.  Happy 20th Sex and the City!! Lemon drop martinis and Gucci shopping sprees (consignment only of course) are in order!

What are some of your fondest memories of Sex and the City?

On the Scene: The Ocean’s 8 New York Premiere with Rihanna in Givenchy Lamé Ruffles, Sandra Bullock in Feathered Elie Saab, Mindy Kaling in Prabal Gurung, and More!

Ocean’s 8 is coming to theaters on June 8th! Are you excited?
The film’s stars all came together for the New York Premiere of the action/adventure film in fashionable frocks. Take a look:

Rihanna opted for a pleated lamé Givenchy Fall 2018 pleated dress for the festivities. A dark lip, slicked back hair, and stunning jewels completed her look. Hot!

Sarah Paulson was anything but understated in a neon green Prada dress.

She joined Sandra Bullock, who beamed in a feathered Elie Saab frock.

I was digging Cate Blanchett’s sequined Missoni suit, replete with a striped down the side. Hot!

Anne Hathaway was all smiles in an African inspired Gaultier dress from the brand’s Spring Couture collection.

Gigi Hadid bet on black Vera Wang for the occasion.

She grabbed a pic with Lily Aldridge, who wore a sheer black gown from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2018 collection.

Black was also on the menu for Helena Bonham Carter, who opted for a draped Vivienne Westwood Dress.

Model Cindy Bruna had one of my favorite looks of the night in a multicolored Balmain Fall 2018 mini dress.

It was all about the high slit, as modeled by Adriana Lima in Cavalli couture.

Vogue Editors Anna Wintour and Hamish Bowles were in attendance.

Dascha Polanco channeled Spring in a form fitting dress by Jay Godfrey.

Lastly, Mindy Kaling showed off her stems in a shimmering Prabal Gurung gown. Work it!

The Hottest Looks From the 2018 CFDA Awards with Issa Rae in Pyer Moss, Ciara in Monse, Naomi Campbell in Calvin Klein, and More!

Have you followed our backup Instagram page @fashionbombdailymag yet?! The stars brought the heat to the carpet for the 2018 CFDA Awards at the Brooklyn Museum last night. We covered the hottest looks on our feed and we looked at your likes saw who you were loving! Here were some of the hottest looks of the night:

It was all about classic black and white for Lupita Nyongo as she graced the carpet in a strapless mini Versace dress. That statement necklace is everything!

Ashley Graham opted for a nude Vera Wang gown with a sheer top with a pop of a red lippie. Graham usually shows her curvaceous figure off a bit more on the carpet, but for this event she kept it subtle.

Naomi Campbell was presented with the CFDA ‘Icon’ award and twirled her way on the carpet as such. She went bold in a red fringe Calvin Klein frock. Hot!

Come through legs!! Cici showed off her stems in an off-the-shoulder tuxedo dress with a deep v cut. With minimal glam and a pulled back ponytail, this was one of Ciara’s most effortless looks!

Whoopi Goldberg beamed in a hot pink Christian Siriano belted ensemble. Siriano and Whoopi are a dynamic duo when it comes to carpet looks and this outfit shows why. She topped her belted jacket and wide leg pant look off with a matching hat. Go, Whoopi!

Kim Kardashian flaunted her curves per usual in a cream Rick Owens co-ord set. She accessorized with gold bangles shining up her wrist and she wore a high beauty wave ponytail. Mrs. Kardashian-West also accepted the CFDA Influencer award last night. Congratulations, Kim!

Versace, Versace, Versace! Gigi Hadid rocked a SS18 Versace ensemble from head to toe and completed her look with a hot red lip and red pump.

Mama-to-be Chanel Iman was on the scene in a black Nicole Miller dress with lace up cutouts and a high thigh slit. She better work that baby bump!

You can never go wrong with a classic pantsuit. Kourtney Kardashian, often dubbed the ‘Best Dressed’ Kardashian sister struck a pose clad in a Christian Siriano printed pantsuit. Sexy and timeless!

The hostess of the night Issa Rae went bold in a royal blue one shoulder Pyer Moss jumpsuit with a sheer overlay. She accessorized with a black belt that read, “Every N*ggah Is a Star.” How can you not love Issa?!

Kendell Jenner showed off her model legs in a lilac Alexandre Vauthier frock. Hot!

Tracee Ellis Ross beamed in a strapless tiered Carolina Herrara dress. The ruffled tiered skirt featured various shades of pink and she topped it off with a hot pink lip. She’s such a stunner!

Fashion News: Fashion Designer Kate Spade Found Dead at 55

Iconic fashion designer, Kate Spade, 55 was found dead in her NYC apartment early this morning in after hanging herself. According to TMZ, “Law enforcement sources confirmed she was found 10:20 AM ET, and had hanged herself in her Park Avenue home. She was pronounced dead on the scene.”

Kate got her start in the ’80s working for women’s magazine “Mademoiselle” in Manhattan, when she moved in with Andy Spade — David Spade’s brother. She and Andy met in college while working at a clothing store. She then started her small handbag line in the early ’90s that has now become a major lifestyle brand and fashion empire. With fun shapes and bold colors, Kate Spade certainly made a name for herself in the fashion industry.

Kate sold her company in 2007 and took some time off to raise her daughter — but got back in the game in 2016 by launching a new fashion brand called Frances Valentine named after her 13-year-old daughter. She was 55 years old.

Rest in Peace, Kate. The Fashion Bomb Daily team sends our condolences to the Spade family.

Fashion Bombshell of the Day: Trenae from Baltimore

Happy Tuesday!

Today’s Fashion Bombshell of the day is Trenae from Baltimore, MD.

She writes, “My personal style is hard to pinpoint. It’s eclectic in the sense that it’s a mix of so many things. I ’m trendy, pretty, sometimes sexy, a bit of a tomboy but still chic. And even with all those elements, I think people who know me would say that my style is fitting to my personality. My fave thing to wear is distressed jeans, a cute tee, a dope jacket, and heels.”
