Moniece Slaughter Exclusive Editorial: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Her (She Sang the America’s Next Top Model Theme Song, Her Dad Has 10 Grammys, and More)

We have another Exclusive Editorial, this time featuring Moniece Slaughter from Love and Hip Hop Hollywood. Though the mother, singer, and entrepreneur is most known for her fiery temper and no-nonsense attitude on the popular VH1 show, a recent interview and photo shoot revealed a softer, deeper side.

In the shoot, photographed by Oles Jamueller, art directed by Arina Gasanova, and styled by Jai Style, and Angel Johnson, Moniece ditches her self described ‘tomboy chic,‘ “sexy nerd,’ and ‘mom,‘ style in favor of lace, lingerie, frothy tulle, ruffles, and feminine dresses. She admits, “I’m not into lingerie, I’m not into ruffles or frills. I’m definitely not the girly type. I’m not comfortable being sexy, but I have learned how to turn the sex appeal up a notch without looking slutty or tasteless or classless.”

In our interview, she let us know more about the real Moniece–the one we don’t see on TV. Behold, 5 things you may not have known about the LA Native:

1. Her Dad has 10 Grammy’s. She comes from a musical family.

Moniece’s father, Dave Thomas, is a very accomplished musician. She says, “My Dad is a gospel singer, he sings with the group Take 6, a Grammy award winning group. Individually they do a lot. The bass in the group, my uncle Alvin [Chea], he does soundtracks and commercials, and movies, and he has a book out called Bassline. My uncle Mark, they say is a savant and he does most of the arrangements. My Dad also worked on the Prince of Egypt soundtrack. He’s done vocal training for some of the Jacksons, Britney Spears, Christina [Aguilera], Destiny’s Child, Brandy Norwood, the list goes on and on and on.”

2. She is a singer and sang the theme song for America’s Next Top Model.

She says, “I’ve written on records for Akon and Marques Houston. Akon actually found me and signed me, shelved me. My Dad got me the gig to sing America’s Next Top Model theme song, straight out of high school. I still make a cute little coin from that, now that it’s been syndicated in [several] countries. My godbrother actually revamped the soundtrack a few years back. I was the original singer from Cycle 1 until they started mixing guys and girls. For many years, I had that theme song.”

Hear Moniece sing below:

3. She is coming out with a clothing line, Plane Jane, this Fall.

“The name of my line is Plane Jane. From being on the show what I noticed was my demographic is not your average glamour puss, they’re not rich, they’re moms, they work jobs and go to school. And I’ve been told that they really admire how I make simple look so good. I’m coming out with a line based off of that. All original designs by me. I’m really excited. I’ve got some of my samples back, I’m gonna be tweaking that and adding a few pieces for my fall collection.”

4. She may not be returning next season.

She says, “I’ve been very vocal about it on social media and in interviews: I’m ready to go. Unfortunately they don’t want to release me. They block my opportunities any and everywhere else and trust me they come in by the boatload. Their reason is that they don’t want to give another network the advantage of having me. As much as I would like to show up and just be boring, this is my real life. In real life, I am a hothead, in real life, my son’s father and I go through a lot, in real life, my relationship is tested a lot, in real life, b*tches like to poke the bear. And oftentimes they know just what to say to incite a reaction or evoke a particular emotion in me. My reactions and responses are very real. Being boring is jut not an option. I’m the one that everyone loves to hate. I am ready to depart the show, I’m ready to take a leap of faith, and hope that what GOD has in store for me is way bigger than this. I appreciate the platform, but at the same time, I can’t lie about the havoc it does wreak in my real life.

5. Her real life doesn’t have as much drama.

In my real life, I don’t have those kinds of problems,” she says, “ My friends and I don’t beef like that. My baby daddy and I don’t beef like that in real life. It causes problems for me that I normally wouldn’t have. I’ve been very open about my struggles with depression and anxiety. A lot of people don’t know that at the top of the year, I had a whole entire, just complete nervous breakdown. I didn’t shoot for about a month. It was my decision to go back on antidepressants to kind of manage getting through this season. I’m really not interested in playing this game.

In conclusion, she says, “There are so many more layers to me that production seems to refuse to highlight. I’m an entrepreneur, I’m a business woman, and I am a mother first. Because the show has become such a soap opera, my music and my entrepreneurial business ventures get no shine. The few times that my music does get highlighted, they ruin it with something dramatic and by the end of the scene or the episode no-one even remembers that I sing. This is my 5th season, and in 5 seasons I constantly hear, I didn’t know she could sing, I didn’t know her dad has 10 Grammy’s, we didn’t know she grew up in the business, so we thought she was just a reality star trying to be a singer. Little does the world know or Ghetto USA (as I like to call them our demographic and our viewers) they don’t know that I’m a singer that just so happened to end up on reality TV.”

The Hottest Looks From The 2018 Teen Choice Awards: Normani in Tommy Hilfiger, Nick Cannon in Gucci, Storm Reid in Coach, and More!

The 2018 Teen Choice Awards kicked off in Los Angeles this past Sunday and the teen stars (and some older stars) brought the heat to the carpet. Get into some of the hottest looks of the night below:

Normani kept it cute in a Tommy Hilfiger ensemble. You can never go wrong with a high slit skirt on the carpet, she definitely made a statement in the plaid print. I would’ve loved to see a different hairstyle, but she still looked bomb!

Chloe Moretz wore a Louis Vuitton ensemble from their Resort 2019 collection. The logo cuffs on the blazer are so cute!

The host of the night, Nick Cannon went for a bold look draped in Gucci. Not only did he wear a colorful tiger printed tracksuit by the brand, but he also rocked a matching head scarf and shades. Hot! Or Hmm…?  Storm Reid always looks so cute on carpets! She wore a flirty printed Coach dress and booties.

Bebe Rex is known to turn heads with her looks, this one was no different. She struck a pose on the carpet donning a bubble gum pink LaRoxx suit accessorized with a crystal bra by August Getty Atelier.

Khalid was all smiles on the carpet looking dapper. He opted for a Fendi look–a classic trench and striped tuxedo pants with the logo adorned on the sides. Dressed like a true bomber!

5+ Bomb Celebs from Philly: Will Smith, Jill Scott, Eve, and More!

So I was just in Philly, doing Promo for our upcoming Fashion Bomb x Better than Success Brunch, taking place Saturday, August 18th from 1-6pm (details here). In between radio interviews and bites of delicious cheesesteaks, I began to think of how many greats were born and bred in Philly.
Just for fun, behold 5 Bomb Celebs who call Philadelphia their hometown:

1. Will Smith

As Will Smith rapped in the classic intro ]to his hit show Fresh Prince of Bel Air, “In West Philadelphia born and raised….” Frequently throughout the popular series, Smith referenced his upbringing, with his urban edge bringing a spark and grit to his elitist Bel Air experience.

Philly is proud of their native son, so much so, they erected a mural in his honor.

Will Smith was touched. See him muse about his mural and his upbringing below:

2. Jill Scott

Songstress Jill Scott, affectionately known as Jilly from Philly, gave tribute to her hometown in a song, singing, “My name is J-I-L-L-S-C-O-T-T, Jill Scott representing North Philly…”

She’s often called Philly the musical capital of the world, and Philly loves her right back. She was honored at the Philly Music Walk of Fame and also at the Philly Music Alliance.

3. Kevin Hart

Philadelphia native, comedian, and actor Kevin Hart frequently shows love to his city: he gifted 6 Philadelphia students with scholarships to go to college.

Philly loves their own. The city erected a mural of the funny man at Max’s Cheesesteaks.

He even has a Kevin Hart day! More here:

4. Eve

The ‘Pitbull in a Skirt,’ got her start in West Philadelphia, living there until her family moved to the neighborhood of Germantown. Eve graduated from Martin Luther King High School in Philadelphia.

Since then, she has won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2002, for the song “Let Me Blow Ya Mind”, with American singer Gwen Stefani, appeared in films and on TV, and is now a permanent co-host on The Talk.

5. Meek Mill

Though in the news recently for his run ins with the law, Meek Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams in South Philadelphia, is one of the top rappers of his generation.

His hit songs include “Amen,“Dreams & Nightmares,” and “All Eyes on You.”

6. The Roots

The Roots crew, started in 1987 by Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson in Phialdelphia, are known for a soulful and R&B infused approach to hip-hop featuring live musical instruments. Black Thought and Questlove met while they were students at Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Since then, they have climbed the musical charts and now hold residence as Jimmy Fallon’s House Band.

MODE by Musu Kaikai is an online retail store owned by fashion enthusiast, Musu Kaikai. The e-boutique carries curated clothing and accessories from her travels, and across the world. The MODE by Musu Kaikai Autumn/Winter 2018 Collection, Femme Elégante, is inspired by the beautiful women of Senegal, and comprises midi and maxi Boubou gowns that boast bright colors, intricate embroidery, and organza and silk chiffon fabrics.

Each look is topped off my elaborate head wraps.

The store also stocks simple multi-colored maxi dresses.

According to the store, “The Boubou gown is the traditional dress of Senegalese women, which can be worn every day, or on special occasions. The garment is also worn in several countries across Africa including Djibouti, The Gambia, Guinea, Mauritania, Niger, Mali and Sierra Leone. Boubou is a rich garment that is usually made with wax fabric, bazin or cotton. However, with the modernisation of traditional African fashion, the women of Senegal have incorporated new fabrics and styles to showcase their creativity.”

Store Owner Musu Kaikai states, “Personally, I believe that nothing illustrates the elegance of the African woman like a well draped gown. It has been an absolute pleasure for my sister, Mary-Ann Kaikai, and I to learn from Senegalese artisans during Dakar fashion Week, and working with them to produce this collection. We hope you love it as much as we do”.

Femme Elégante is available for purchase online at MODE OBSERVER or at Madam Wokie (www.instagram.com/madamwokie) Ltd, 14 C Syke Street, Brookfields, Freetown, Sierra Lone. Cushnie et Ochs Rebrands as Just Cushnie

Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of the beloved brand Cushnie et Ochs have parted ways. This morning, the brand announced the change, simply adopting the name ‘Cushnie.’

Carly Cushnie told The Business of Fashion, “Following the the departure of co-founder Michelle Ochs and chief executive Peter Arnold earlier this year, change is afoot — and Cushnie is in the driving seat, taking the creative and business helm as sole creative director and CEO. The brand’s upcoming Spring 2019 show during New York Fashion Week this September will be Cushnie’s solo runway debut.”

In addition to offering denim in her upcoming collection, Cushnie plans on adding new styles to her bag line. She also has plans to give back to show younger designers that anything is possible.

She told BOF, “Ever since I was young I wanted to be a fashion designer, but there weren’t really many or any role models I could really aspire to in the space. That’s why it was important for me to partner with the Lower East Side Girls Club, because there are so few women like me who have the opportunity to be able to give back, and to be an example, as a woman of color.”

Congrats to her! We’re looking forward to her next collection and to what Ms. Cushnie does next.
