Fashion Mistakes Not to Make

No matter how big of a fashionista we are, all of us are susceptible to making fashion mistakes at some point in time. These can be small yet common mistakes like spending too much on an outfit, or something major like wearing an evening gown to an informal get together.

While some of these mistakes can be forgiven, some often get etched into people’s memories for a lifetime. This is why it is important to be careful.

Although fashion is subjective and largely depends on personal opinion, universal style evolves through the ages and follows certain rules and key pointers that are not bound to a particular time.

If you’re new to fashion, this article can certainly be of help as we have compiled a list of fashion mistakes you must avoid to stay cool.

You’re Sticking to Old Fashion Trends

The most important aspect of fashion is that it is ever changing. Hence, don’t stick to one particular style and try to stay ahead in the game by saying in fashion and following the latest trends.

Switch it up. Experiment with you looks and try new things.

Do Not Wear the Same Colors

This one is an oldie. But still stands just as true. Always go for contrast to stand out.

You can try to build a monochromatic look by choosing a different shade of the same color. Mix and match different tones of the same color family to have a good appearance and never wear the same color from head to toe.

You’re Not Dressed According To the Weather

Although fashion is flexible and can be changed to suit personal preference, avoid wearing extra dark colors in the summer and light colors in the winter.

Choose light breezy cooler tones like sky blue and baby pink for the hotter months and dark, deep, warm tones like maroons, browns and bright emeralds for winters.

Remember Less is More

If the print of your clothes is loud and eccentric, avoid wearing any statement jewelry as it will clash. Remember that less is more.

If you wear too many accessories, you will end up looking like a Christmas tree.

Similarly, while matching lowers and tops, make sure only one is printed whilst the other is a block color.

Do not clash prints or colors too much.

Choose one focal point in the outfit and focus on that.

Wear Clothes That Fit you

This one may be a little debatable. But try dressing for your body. If petite, try to go for elongated looks such as overalls or harem pants with heels. Whilst if you’re tall, opt for flat shoes and culottes.

Similarly, if you’re on the thicker side, avoid choosing baggy shirts and loose pants/lowers. Instead, choose one body part to accentuate,  such as the hips or waist or chest, and build around that.

Try working with problem areas with folds and minor frills and opting for darker and bolder colors instead of light colors.

If you are on the skinnier side, avoid extremely fitted dresses and tops and instead go for slightly loose outfits that add a bit of body to your appearance.

Also choose thicker/sturdier material for shirts and tops.

For extra flair around hips and chest, choose ruffled shirts or embroidered embossments that add volume to the look.

Always try it on before you buy it. In case you’re shopping online, pick a store that accepts returns so that you do not have to go through any trouble.

You’re Not Doing Your Makeup Properly

This is a very common fashion mistake. Even Angelina Jolie has been a victim of bad makeup.

There are so many things you have to keep in mind. Avoid makeup that melts and make sure to choose the right foundation, according to your skin type.

Other than this, your eyes and lips should compliment each other.

Focus on one area. If you are going for darker/smokey eyes, then choose neutral lips.

If you want to go for bolder lips such as red or coral, choose light shadows for eyes.

Also, wear makeup according to your outfit, weather and venue so that you do not end up looking too loud or too dull.

Don’t Do Desperation Shopping

Avoid shopping at the last moment and make sure to buy all that you need at least two weeks in advance.

This will give you enough time to shop around. Shopping at the last minute does not only lead to poor choices but often causes you to waste money. So be a smart shopper and prepare in advance.

Pay Attention to All Body Parts and Not Just the Face

This is a common fashion mistake. A lot of us work so much on the face, but neglect other body parts that are equally important if not more.

For example, make sure to keep your neck clean. You can wear a nice name necklace to make your neck stand out. This can be your style statement while also enhancing your overall look.

Other than this, have attractive nails. Go for pedicure and manicure to keep your hands and feet attractive.

Pick The Right Accessory

Accessories are very important, especially shoes, and handbags. These are a must for every outfit so make sure to keep a nice collection of shoes and bags.

Other accessories include watches, sunglasses, bangles etc.

Don’t Buy Something Just Because It Is Cheap

This is something we all have done at some point in our life. Items on sale are attractive, but only buy it if you really need it. Why fill your wardrobe with something you might never wear?

Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, Dies at 76

Earlier this week news broke that Aretha Franklin was “gravely ill,” according to TMZ. Fans and music lovers around the world sent well wishes to Ms. Franklin during her last few days. Today it was announced that she passed away at 76 due to advanced pancreatic cancer. She was dubbed the “Queen of Soul” by an era who swooned over her vocals.

According to TIME,  “Aretha Franklin—the Queen of Soul and first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whose songs like “Respect” and “Natural Woman” still move audiences decades after their release—died on Thursday at the age of 76. Franklin died at her home in Detroit, her representative Gwendolyn Quinn confirmed, according to the Associated Press. She had battled a spate of health problems over the last few years, forcing the cancellation of multiple concerts this year. One of the most iconic musicians of the twentieth century, Franklin said last year that she planned to retire soon from touring.”

The Fashion Bomb team loved Aretha for her iconic moments both musically and fashionably. She will be remembered forever.

What’s your most fond memory of Aretha Franklin?

Celebrities Love: Burberry Check Print Leggings As Worn by Tammy Rivera, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, and Claire Sulmers

Nicki Minaj stepped out for a recent promo event, rocking the same $450 Burberry check print leggings previously spied on Tammy Rivera and Beyonce.

Beyonce was the first to wear the piece in her Apeshit video:

Tammy followed suit, pairing the top and bottom with a oversize button down and glittery boots.

And Nicki kept her look relatively simple with a full check look, comprising a sports bra, cap, and the leggings.

I tried the look on myself, pairing it with the sports bra and a jacket from the Fall 2018 collection.

It’s a fun look!

Moniece Slaughter Exclusive Editorial: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Her (She Sang the America’s Next Top Model Theme Song, Her Dad Has 10 Grammys, and More)

We have another Exclusive Editorial, this time featuring Moniece Slaughter from Love and Hip Hop Hollywood. Though the mother, singer, and entrepreneur is most known for her fiery temper and no-nonsense attitude on the popular VH1 show, a recent interview and photo shoot revealed a softer, deeper side.

In the shoot, photographed by Oles Jamueller, art directed by Arina Gasanova, and styled by Jai Style, and Angel Johnson, Moniece ditches her self described ‘tomboy chic,‘ “sexy nerd,’ and ‘mom,‘ style in favor of lace, lingerie, frothy tulle, ruffles, and feminine dresses. She admits, “I’m not into lingerie, I’m not into ruffles or frills. I’m definitely not the girly type. I’m not comfortable being sexy, but I have learned how to turn the sex appeal up a notch without looking slutty or tasteless or classless.”

In our interview, she let us know more about the real Moniece–the one we don’t see on TV. Behold, 5 things you may not have known about the LA Native:

1. Her Dad has 10 Grammy’s. She comes from a musical family.

Moniece’s father, Dave Thomas, is a very accomplished musician. She says, “My Dad is a gospel singer, he sings with the group Take 6, a Grammy award winning group. Individually they do a lot. The bass in the group, my uncle Alvin [Chea], he does soundtracks and commercials, and movies, and he has a book out called Bassline. My uncle Mark, they say is a savant and he does most of the arrangements. My Dad also worked on the Prince of Egypt soundtrack. He’s done vocal training for some of the Jacksons, Britney Spears, Christina [Aguilera], Destiny’s Child, Brandy Norwood, the list goes on and on and on.”

2. She is a singer and sang the theme song for America’s Next Top Model.

She says, “I’ve written on records for Akon and Marques Houston. Akon actually found me and signed me, shelved me. My Dad got me the gig to sing America’s Next Top Model theme song, straight out of high school. I still make a cute little coin from that, now that it’s been syndicated in [several] countries. My godbrother actually revamped the soundtrack a few years back. I was the original singer from Cycle 1 until they started mixing guys and girls. For many years, I had that theme song.”

Hear Moniece sing below:

3. She is coming out with a clothing line, Plane Jane, this Fall.

“The name of my line is Plane Jane. From being on the show what I noticed was my demographic is not your average glamour puss, they’re not rich, they’re moms, they work jobs and go to school. And I’ve been told that they really admire how I make simple look so good. I’m coming out with a line based off of that. All original designs by me. I’m really excited. I’ve got some of my samples back, I’m gonna be tweaking that and adding a few pieces for my fall collection.”

4. She may not be returning next season.

She says, “I’ve been very vocal about it on social media and in interviews: I’m ready to go. Unfortunately they don’t want to release me. They block my opportunities any and everywhere else and trust me they come in by the boatload. Their reason is that they don’t want to give another network the advantage of having me. As much as I would like to show up and just be boring, this is my real life. In real life, I am a hothead, in real life, my son’s father and I go through a lot, in real life, my relationship is tested a lot, in real life, b*tches like to poke the bear. And oftentimes they know just what to say to incite a reaction or evoke a particular emotion in me. My reactions and responses are very real. Being boring is jut not an option. I’m the one that everyone loves to hate. I am ready to depart the show, I’m ready to take a leap of faith, and hope that what GOD has in store for me is way bigger than this. I appreciate the platform, but at the same time, I can’t lie about the havoc it does wreak in my real life.

5. Her real life doesn’t have as much drama.

In my real life, I don’t have those kinds of problems,” she says, “ My friends and I don’t beef like that. My baby daddy and I don’t beef like that in real life. It causes problems for me that I normally wouldn’t have. I’ve been very open about my struggles with depression and anxiety. A lot of people don’t know that at the top of the year, I had a whole entire, just complete nervous breakdown. I didn’t shoot for about a month. It was my decision to go back on antidepressants to kind of manage getting through this season. I’m really not interested in playing this game.

In conclusion, she says, “There are so many more layers to me that production seems to refuse to highlight. I’m an entrepreneur, I’m a business woman, and I am a mother first. Because the show has become such a soap opera, my music and my entrepreneurial business ventures get no shine. The few times that my music does get highlighted, they ruin it with something dramatic and by the end of the scene or the episode no-one even remembers that I sing. This is my 5th season, and in 5 seasons I constantly hear, I didn’t know she could sing, I didn’t know her dad has 10 Grammy’s, we didn’t know she grew up in the business, so we thought she was just a reality star trying to be a singer. Little does the world know or Ghetto USA (as I like to call them our demographic and our viewers) they don’t know that I’m a singer that just so happened to end up on reality TV.”
