Why Nicki Minaj’s Versace Look at the EMA’s was actually Perfect

With Halloween falling in the middle of the week, the weekends before and after were spent in costume. I saw so many Wonder and Catwomen; Batmen, Spidermen and their respective villains. People love the fantasy of a superhero. So when Nicki Minaj swooped down from the heavens with her gold harness and sheer waist-cape glittering in stars, I was ready to be saved.

I’ve always been slightly irked by the gender-naming of certain music awards; Best Female this vs Best Male this. Why do we need to separate Male and Female musicians and artistes into categories, as though your gender affects your proficiency to create music? The MTV Europe Music Awards category for “Best Hip Hop Artiste” rightly includes nominees regardless of gender into one grouping, although looking through the years of winners and hopefuls, it has been heavily men, and Missy Elliot. Nicki Minaj is the only other woman that has ever been nominated, the only woman that has ever won, and who has won the title every time she has been included. #Hero

Even though she also grabbed up “Best Look”, her over-the-top ensembles have faced much public criticism. This Versace outfit was no different, with bloggers and others calling for her to throw her entire styling team into the trash. But I disagree. Nicki Has never been here to fit in, and the mere fact that she can stir such emotion over what she is wearing, is a testament to her character. Her dramatic Cat-eye and impossibly long blonde hair remind me of She-ra. She looks like a fierce cat; unapologetic. She holds her two awards in hand like Thor’s hammer. Her encrusted mask looks like a piece of the planet she must have come from; gold and dripping in light-reflecting stones. When I’m old and I think back to the female artiste who always won Best Hip Hop every year among overwhelming groups of men, in a genre that they have always dominated; a genre where women are often painted as accessories and ass-shakers in the background, I want to think of Nicki Minaj in this- a Superhero’s suit, accentuating her womanly curves and shouting from the ends of the earth that she is here and roaring.

Hot! or Hmm…: Fendi’s Monogram Logo Craze Fendi-mania

Italian Fashion House Fendi has ignited a craze called Fendi-Mania, with looks comprised of head to toe Double F logo print. Ever since the start of the year, fashionistas and fashionistos alike have been rocking with the Fendi Monogram trend, unapologetically, and the brand’s recent collaboration with Fila has offered erstwhile conservative pieces a more casual and sporty twist:

Jhene Aiko and Big Sean were one of the firsts to sidle up to this trend, rocking matching Fendi looks for date night.

Keyshia Kaoir loves all things laden with logos, and has been spied in Fendi Double F’s for a myriad of events, with her equally stylish hubby Gucci Mane right behind her.

Rita Ora, Keyshia, and Nicki Minaj were all spied in the same Furry Fendi monogram jacket.

Another big logo lover, Premadonna, wears Fendi all the time, but recently announced her pregnancy wearing a $1,790 Fendi x Fila short dress and $1,790 Cowboy boots by the brand. Her whole family matched with her to the tee, with her sons and husband in Fendi jackets with jeans featuring peekaboos of Fendi fabric.

Both Fergie and Mary J Blige donned the brand’s logo jumpsuit.

Karen Civil rocked Fendi monogram boots and a matching top for an LA Fendi fete.

Even executives are getting in on the fun. Kim Blackwell rocked it so right in a Fendi trench for CWC Atlanta and all Fendi everything for various events.

Meek Mill donned a $2,890 Fendi trench to the Tidal x Brooklyn concert.

Ot Genasis kicked it with girlfriend Malika Haqq at a recent game in a Fendi x Fila jacket.

Lastly, Odell Beckham, Jr. took the look to the limit donning Fendi head to toe, down to the mask.

There you have it! While some looks are a bit much, I think I am appreciating this resurgence.
What about you? Is it Hot! or Hmm…?

5 Looks in 5 Minutes : Dr Marten’s

We all know that 90’s fashion has once again come back around, and it’s not going anywhere! Everything from dad sneakers, Clueless inspired plaid and even the brown lips (thank you, Fenty Beauty)

There is one 90’s grunge boot that’s been showing up in all the celebrities’ and influencer’s closets and never leaves – Dr Marten’s.

Everyone from Cardi B, the Hadid sisters and Kourtney Kardashian have all been seen wearing the immediately recognizable combat boot.

These yellow-stitched beauties are no stranger on the streets during Fashion Week from all over the globe. Even holding its’ own on the catwalk working with designers like Chromat and Hardware LDN.

The UK owned brand first released their iconic 1460 boot in the 60’s and made its’ mark during the British punk/rock period of the 70’s. After a quieter time during the early 2000’s (when it was all about dainty, barely-there shoes) Dr Marten’s (also known as DM’s) has continued to grow in popularity. In March 31st 2018, it was reported that Dr Martens’ total revenue grew by 20%. In the US alone, revenue increased by 11% and they opened 3 new retail stores in New York.

How To Wear Them?

Dr Marten’s are the perfect fall/winter shoe for many reasons, but the main one is how versatile they are when it comes to styling and outfit choices.

Look 1: Create balance by opting for cute, floaty dresses to wear with your boots. Think ditsy floral prints, striking polka dots or a colorful number to set off your Dr Marten’s. Win extra cool girl points by adding a leather jacket. Perfect for when the weather starts to turn a little cooler.

Look 2: Pair your DM’s with the massive athleisure trend for that relaxed feel. Add your favorite pair of I AM GIA style combat pants with a contrasting body suit or crop top for a chilled weekend look. Still a bit warm? Try them with this summer’s biggest items – cycling shorts and an oversized t-shirt.

Look 3: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. You can never do wrong with the classic denim and leather combo. Experiment with different denim pieces such as a denim shirt or a pair of well-loved jeans. You could even try going all out with the double denim trend.

Look 4: For a more structured outfit, try combining your Dr Marten’s with the clean cut silhouette of a suit. Think blazers matched with slim fit pants effortlessly rolled up just above the boot.

Look 5: For real grunge 90’s lewk, match your boots with the pattern of the season – plaid. Top it off with a graphic t-shirt or a chunky knit and you’re ready to go.

Bonus Style Tip: swap out the laces for a contrasting color or material such as satin, to really personalize it.

We would love to see the looks you create with your Dr Martens. Snap a pic on Instagram and #FashionBombDaily or tag us

These days you can’t spend much time on your Instagram feed without seeing a picture of someone with pink clay smeared on their face along with the #AlyaSkin.

Alya Skin has been running for less than a year, the company was started by 2 friends in Melbourne soon after they noticed the fast growing clay mask trend in the beauty space. In their first 4 months, the brand made $1million dollars in revenue. An amazing result for 22 year old co-founders James Hachem and Manny Barbas, who have never worked in the beauty industry before.

Benefits of Pink Clay

It is known especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin as it is the most gentle of all the clays (green and white is also big in the beauty game) but it is suitable for all skin types.

Pink clay helps to restore and replenish skin (great for dry skin types), targeting impurities and reduces inflammation.

6 Tips for Getting Rid of Wardrobe Clutter

Main Image Source: Pixabay.com

A new year is just around the corner. Of the many resolutions you may be thinking about, few will give you the feeling of a new beginning such as a wardrobe cleanup. Overstretched jumpers, ill-fitting pants, outdated accessories, or fleeting trends and attire you’ve simply never worn, should all probably be making way for a fresh start. Here’s 6 tips to clear the space and reset your closet to start anew.  Thinking about getting a new ladies watches or shopping for neutral tones that can be paired year after year is a better investment in the long run.

The rationale for getting rid of wardrobe clutter is obvious but actually doing it is a different matter altogether. The chronic procrastination is often because the chaos feels so overwhelming that you aren’t sure of just where to start. Yet, if you keep your eye on what’s most important, you can pull it off with relative ease. Here’s how.

  • Discard Anything Cheap and Trashy

Cheap and trashy usually implies low quality so when you are thinking about what to discard, you should probably start with these. Of course, trashy is pretty subjective so the specific items that will fall in this bracket will vary from person to person. Most times though, it is items that you saw as sexy when you bought them but now cringe when you imagine wearing them.

Some of your cheap stuff may have practical use (like wearing when you are indoors) so don’t just throw out everything unchecked. In any case, you’ll find that you wear a small number of your clothes on rotation with the rest worn rarely or not at all. Nearly all your cheap and trashy wear will almost certainly be in the seldom or never worn category.

  • Keep it Simple

Trendy clothes look spectacular in the moment but their appeal quickly vanishes once they are no longer in fashion. You shouldn’t build your wardrobe on the strength of seasonal, fast changing trends. Instead, the theme ought to be keeping it simple and basic (unless you are part of the 1 percent and can afford to spend tons of cash on clothing alone).

These basic items should form the building blocks of most outfits you wear. It could be a couple of plain trousers, several pairs of jeans or a set of jumpers that are evergreen fashion-wise. Simple, basic items can be part of your wardrobe for years and never look out of place.

  • Act Ruthlessly

If you are a working adult, chances are that the overwhelming majority of the items in your wardrobe were bought with your own money or a partner’s. The thing about spending money on something is that you develop an emotional connection to it.

It’s why getting rid of anything you bought (house, car, clothes etc.) can be difficult and is the trigger for the procrastination most people struggle with when it comes to decluttering their wardrobe.

You have to be decisive and ruthless in your wardrobe overhaul. Best approach is to come up with a set of hard rules to follow. For example, anything you haven’t worn over the last 12 months has got to go.

  • What Can You Sell?

Some items are best given away to family, friends or charity. Others may be in such a terrible state that you can only toss them in the trash. But there’s a third option especially if you don’t mind generating some cash from your clothes’ pile: you could put them up for sale.

Some of your dresses, blouses and pants may be in such good condition or almost new that there are actually people out there who would not mind paying to have them. Just because something is no longer appealing to you doesn’t mean that it isn’t attractive to everyone else. If a garage or car boot sale doesn’t work, consider posting on a fashion resale site.

  • Balance The Colors

One of the reasons why so many of your clothes are going unworn is because you probably have too much of a particular color. Everyone has one or more favorite colors and that’s okay. The problem is that after several months and years of shopping, you may find that just one or two colors excessively dominate your wardrobe.

If you, for instance, end up with an ocean of black and grey, you may want to pause buying any more items of that color. You could also prioritize these colors when identifying the clothes you want to get rid of. That way, you can fill your closet with new colors that will achieve a healthy balance.

  • Seek Online Inspiration

Internet access is near ubiquitous in developed countries. Yet, it remains incredibly underutilized. Exploring the world wide web can certainly provide some invaluable inspiration for your wardrobe reorganization plans.

Instagram in particular has carved a niche as the go-to platform for the fashion conscious so that would be a great place to start. Visit and follow the profiles of fashion icons, fashion bloggers and leading clothing brands for tips and ideas on how you can achieve a lean, clean, coordinated and practical wardrobe.

A wardrobe revamp takes time, thought and effort. By following these tips, you are more likely to get it right from the get-go.

How Do You Wear it? Reader Halloween 2018 Costumes Part 2

By: Morgan Smith (@muvamorgs)

Being in college and low on funds, I learned to “make do with what I have”. Halloween costumes sold at stores are kind of expensive, typically running from $30 to almost $80 in some cases. Creating your own costume is honestly cheaper and more fun than buying one already put together for you because you get to add your own flare and creativity. DIY costumes have grown in popularity over the years as people have been going ALL types of extremes to achieve the looks of their favorite characters, memes, and celebrities! I noticed that Rihanna and Lil’ Kim’s looks over the years appear the most on the streets during Halloween because they have carry such huge influences in the fashion industry. Kim and Rih have given us such daringly sexy looks that have always turned heads and stuck in our minds which is why they are labeled as fashion icons. Each year, everyone goes all out trying to mimic their most iconic looks. Let’s get into this year’s best recreations!

Lil Kim has long been viewed as a fashion icon by supplying us what her bold and sexy looks. She blessed us with her monochromatic outfits from “Crush on You” where she dressed in the colors red, blue, yellow, and green, providing us with four timeless looks. Let’s not forget the popular purple jumpsuit with the seashell pasty outfit from the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. I have seen many people dress up like Kim on Halloween. Last year, Beyonce even paid homage by dressing up as five of Kim’s famous looks. Let’s take a look at this year’s DIY Lil Kim looks:

Ann Wynn (@ann.wynn) as Kim modeling for Baby Phat Lingerie in 2000

Kimberly Jenner (@poshspiiiice) as Kim at the 1999 VMAs.

Monae Bynum (@hiiimoe) as Kim being styled Misa Hylton

Arianna Garcia (@makeupari_) as Kim at the Tommy Hilfiger “Rock Style” exhibit at the Met in 1999

Paola (@mira_xoo), Natacha (@nlrmxo), Asha (@ashamonnae),

and Chanel (@chanelrich_) channeling their inner Kim vibes

by recreating all 4 looks from the “Crush on You” video

Now, we ALL love us some Rih Rih. From her unique street style to her glamorous red carpet looks, Rihanna has long been viewed as fashion icon. Though the Navy is waiting on new music, they have been fulfilling their needs through purchases of her Fenty Beauty and Savage Fenty products. Not to mention, they have been fueling their cravings through amazing recreations of her most celebrated looks from Coachella to 2018’s Heavenly Bodies-themed Met Gala. MUA Jackie Aina even got in on the fun!

Tamara Dhia (@tamaradhia) as Rih at her Anti release party in 2016

Amanda Jane (@janeinthewild) as Rihanna at Coachella in 2017

Jonathan Paul (@jawhar_paulo) as Rihanna at the 2018 Met Gala

A fan dressed as Rihanna at the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

@binbindo as Rihanna at Coachella 2018

Jackie Aina (@jackieaina) as Rihanna at the 2014 CFDA Awards

with Angel Merino (mac_daddyy) and Jade Marie (@jadeywadey180)

at Halsey’s Halloween party over the weekend

We all love us some vintage Kim and can’t hide the fact that she gave lasting looks that greatly influence the fashion industry today. Rihanna is building an empire all the while still sprinkling her fashion influence with her effortless street style and award show looks. Even I look up to these women for style inspiration, and judging by how they are plastered across mood boards and social media platforms, I am clearly not the only one inspired by the two.

Who had your favorite look?
