You Should Know: Harlem Fashion Week’s Upcoming Show on February 16th and Their Mission With a Bold Statement!

Written by: Jennet Jusu (@TheJusuQuench) | Fashion Bomb Intern

Harlem Fashion Week 2018 / The Malcolm X Legacy Collection

It was all a dream…once deferred. With a mission to provide a platform for the rich culture that derives from Harlem, much like the renaissance fellow innovative Harlemites revolutionized in the 1920s, Harlem Fashion Week is a groundbreaking and grand reveal of a new reform. Not only does Harlem Fashion Week help diversify fashion, it infuses the beautiful mediums that shapes African-Americans as a people. Through the expressive forms of art, literature, music and fashion that Harlem has served as an epicenter for, they vow to present a new era for emerging businesses to cultivate and further their growth in the industry. Such an event that provides fruitful knowledge on business education and designing, only perpetuates the aspiring who push the growth of the aspirers. Which is ultimately their main goal. By harnessing the amazing talent and skill that the people of Harlem and globally can provide, since then they have made it a community effort to orchestrate such an event that bridges the variance the heart of Downtown, New York has to offer with Uptown’s stylishly clever presence.

In its fifth year, HFW production of innovative runway shows has given emerging designers an opportunity to showcase their work to the frontrunners of fashion, with features in major media publications including Vogue Italia, Essence and Paper Magazine just to name a few. Where an emerging designer competition takes place as well for celebrity judges to give their expertise, judgement and aid in solidifying a stepping stone for said individuals competing. Harlem Fashion Week, while paying homage to our enriching black heritage, continues to revitalizes the 21st century dreamers in the name of fashion.

Black History Month on Fashion Bomb Daily: Madam C.J. Walker the First Black Millionaire and Haircare Innovator

Though we’ve been focused on fashion pioneers in the industry, we know that hair and beauty is just as important to any look!
So, today, our focus shifts to haircare pioneer and innovator Madam C.J. Walker.

Madam Walker was the first self made female millionaire in America. She built her fortune by developing and marketing a successful line of hair care products for black women. Her mansion, Villa Lewaro, was built in 1918 by Vertner Tandy, the Co-Founder of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Madam Walker built the mansion to stand as a tribute to the advancements of African-Americans, and to act as a pillar of inspiration for future generations. With 34 rooms, an expansive back yard and pool, Madam Walker used her home to hold social events and conferences for her legions of sales agents (according to Wikipedia, Walker trained other women to become “beauty culturists” using “The Walker System”, her method of grooming that was designed to promote hair growth and to condition the scalp through the use of her products. By 1917 the company claimed to have trained nearly 20,000 women.).

In 2018, Richelieu Dennis, founder and CEO of Sundial Brands, purchased Villa Lewaro, and plans to use it as a think tank, “aimed at fostering entrepreneurship among women, particularly women of color, through distance learning and on-site retreats.” (Source)

She once wrote, “I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations. I have built my own factory on my own ground. I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it! Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them.” AMEN, AMEN!

What an inspiration, no?
Who should we feature next?

Copenhagen Fashion Week: Its Growing Popularity, Vibrant Street Style, Designers to Watch, and More!

By: Morgan Smith (@muvamorgs)

It is officially Fashion Month, Bombers and Bombshells! February starts the fashion weeks from the major cities all around the world for their Autumn/Winter 2019 designer collections. This week, we witnessed Copenhagen kicked off the Fashion Month with its AW19 fashion week. Recently an underdog in the fashion scene, Copenhagen Fashion Week has been steadily gaining a lot of attention from fashionistas, street photographers, bloggers, and other fashion professionals. Maybe it’s because in between shows, the streets are filled with such vibrantly, trendy street style looks Or maybe it is because designers are sending such head-turning pieces down the runway. I can tell you right now, it is both of those things.

Copenhagen street style has a little bit of everything to offer. We have those that stick to the classy chic, those that like a little street flare, and those that love a bold haute look. Copenhagen natives like to bring Spring vibes to their style in the fall and winter as street stylers were spotted in bold, energetic colors. Jackets and coats are their go-to garment used to bring that pop of color. They are not afraid to go bold, mixing of prints and colour blocking were important street style trends.

5 Designers to Watch

Stine Goya

Based in Copenhagen, Stine Goya focuses on the frills and fun of femininity which is expressed through eclectic prints and design ways. Stine Goya’s AW19 elegant designs showcase feminine expression and empowerment through ruffles and peplum covered in sparkling glitter and polka dots.

Stand

Stand was founded on the idea of creating perfectly crafted and highly fashionable leather at attainable prices. Since its inception, the seasonal pieces have expanded from leather to more chic pieces like fur which is evident in the AW19 collection. Stand stays true to its leather roots while also playing around with fur alongside whimsical designs and prints.
