Show Review: Tadashi Shoji Fall 2019

Fashion Bomb Daily was in attendance at yesterday’s Tadashia Shoji Fall 2019 show! Known for their stunning evening wear, Tadashi Shoji delivered nonstop glamour for their latest showing, offering floor grazing gowns with contemporary twists. Dresses were equipped with unexpected elements: ruffled degradé hems in burnt orange, sumptuous blue velvet fabrics, and keyhole details.

High slit gowns and one shouldered creations were modeled by women of all sizes.

As mentioned in show notes, “Fall 2019 is a travelogue of Southeast Asia, a land where wonder blossoms and beauty flourishes. Dazzling temples with rich ornamentation reveal each culture’s artistic expression. Not an inch is left bare. These impressive masterpieces inspire architectural silhouettes. Pleated-tulle tiers with pronounced seams mimic the visual rhythms created by steep, layered roofs. Stupas with elaborate moldings and crown-like spires inspire detailed and intricate textures…”

“…The Buddhist monks who frequent these temples influence tailored draping that wraps around the body in flattering sweeps. Depending on where you are, the monks’ robes can be quite distinctive from each other. The flowing folds and supple wrapping vary based on Buddhist school and lineage, region, and even temple. Their methods of draping are as long-standing as the temples themselves. Unchanged and deliberate, they connect past and future…”

“..A visit to Southeast Asia promises cultural intrigue. You can feel it in the colors—a palette of shiny gold stupas, floating markets, silk brocades, and old-world elegance. While Southeast Asian traditional dress is as diverse as its landscape, it shares the common bonds of beauty and fascination. Graceful proportions inform each look. Luxurious one-shoulder folds hint at the shawl-like sabai, and a glimpse of a midriff entices a longer gaze. Each trip to Southeast Asia is a journey to enchantment, where warm welcomes and perpetual allure suggest there is always more to discover.”

We can’t wait to see which starlet will wear one of these stunning gowns on the next red carpet.

Designer Spotlight: Stockholm Fashion Week’s Selam Fessahaye’s Highly Anticipated AW19 Collection

By: Morgan Smith (@muvamorgs)

Last week we witnessed the rising popularity of Copenhagen’s fashion which has a bright future ahead of them for designers and street style. Now, we turn our heads to Stockholm Fashion Week which kicked off on Monday. Yesterday, one of the most high anticipated shows commenced and that was the show from designer, Selam Fessahaye.

Selam Fessahaye is a stylist turned designer, who debuted her first collection at Stockholm’s SS19 Fashion week. Fessahaye became an instant sensation for having the most diverse show in Stockholm Fashion Week history and just simply for her designs. The different skin tones of the models perfectly accented the baby pinks, nudes, and sky blues of the free-flowing garments such as sheer mesh two-piece pants sets, tulle dress, and oversized silk striped pants suits.

Stockholm could not wait to see what she had in store for AW19 and she delivered exactly what critics wanted…a pure design fantasy. The AW19 collection featured another set of diverse models in her signature looks of oversized suits and jackets and two-piece sets, adorned with bold, bright Oriental patterns, vintage florals, vibrant stripes, and iridescent finishes. Selam Fessehaye always keeps the audience on their toes with her playfully chic looks with 18th century and Orientalist influences

What do you think of Selam’s designs? Will you watch out for Selam Fessahaye for SS20?

Written by: Jennet Jusu (@TheJusuQuench) | Fashion Bomb Intern

Yvonne Jewnell, who went to Parsons School of Design, who studied Fine Arts and Fashion Design and has joined forces with her mother Tandra Birkett, an alumna of NYU and Teachers College at Columbia University, to create Harlem Fashion Week and provide prime knowledge on the way to advance in the fashion industry. When asked by Vogue Italia, the start and it’s vision, it’s important to note that they wanted to “introduce a new era of fashion culture to the Harlem community that is inspired by its rich cultural heritage”, their everyday mission.

Inspired by the Harlem Renaissance of black creators, innovators, mavericks, and individualists within the 1920s with a passion, like their main goal in shedding the light such a people bring, Jewnell and Birkett main objectives was to pay proper homage to black culture and the talent within, that’s been neglected for sometime in such an inclusive industry. Where as it’s easy to appropriate such a rich culture, it’s not so easy to credit and shed light on to individuals that deserves it; but they make it happen by producing a night to support and celebrate black excellence.

HFW is meant to propel emerging designers as well, and businesses that are particularly in Harlem. It’s more than an event but also a movement and a platform that’s meant to introduce society to a new era of fashion. Moving forward, their goal that they share is to represent further diversity and inclusivity. Where the culture and fashion maintains its authenticity with a clear message that is to above all, support Harlem businesses while celebrating the heritage of Harlem, New York. HFW is partnering with NYC African Restaurant Week this season. Guests of Harlem Fashion Week will receive discounts at participating restaurants from 2/16/19- 2/23/19. HFW is also partnering with Princess Jenkins the owner of The Brownstone to support the Red, Black, and Green Affair on 2/21 at Mist Harlem.
