Fashion Discussion: Is Black Outrage the New Marketing Strategy?

By Najaah Cooper {@luvnaj}

In wake of the recent racist Gucci and Burberry incidents, and racist politicians getting caught wearing blackface, I wonder: Is Black Outrage the New Marketing Strategy? When the internet “cancels” someone or a brand, the automatic next response is to go to the persons’ social media page and flood their mentions with negative and antagonizing comments.

With the new metrics of social media, this person or brand is now viral and is every third to fifth post you see on your feed. Usually, when a brand makes such an egregious mistake, a martyr is chosen to either patronize or pacify the masses and then all should be forgiven.

But what if we changed our reaction to racism by corporations? What if we just went silent? When a company is found promoting and or selling something racist, sexist, or homophobic, what if we immediately blocked them and reported their pages or ads? Our dollar holds tremendous power and it would be extraordinary if we could use our collective influence to really make a statement to a brand when they blatantly disrespect us.

This is not an issue of “there aren’t any black people in higher positions,” because with all of the progressive white people that voted for Obama, there must be someone behind the scenes who is a bit more aware? This is truly an issue of disrespect and someone in their marketing or press release distribution department saying “let’s see how far we can go, we need to be daring and make people talk. We want to go VIRAL”.
What do you think? Are brands like Moncler, Burberry, and Prada insensitive, or are they purposefully trying to push racial buttons for attention?

Bomb Product of the Day: Dolce and Gabbana Monogram Glitter Heels

By Limsan Boulter (@limo_x) for Fashion Bomb Daily

After Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus wore shoes with initials on the heel over Grammy weekend, it seems that monogrammed heels have taken over the ‘gram. The OG heel ‘Opyum’ by YSL and released back in 2017 with the brand’s logo fixed at the heel. Beyoncé rocked her ‘B’ for Balmain pair at the Roc Nation Pre Grammy Brunch and Miley Cyrus had a custom ‘MC’ pair made for the Grammy ceremony. We spied this Dolce and Gabbana glittering pair with matching bag. The perfect way to pay homage to the logo mania trend we’ve been loving. Hot! Or Hmm..?

Fashion News: Burberry Apologizes for Noose Controversy, Removes From Collection

Written by: Jennet Jusu (@TheJusuQuench) | Fashion Bomb Intern

In midst of the hustle and bustle of London Fashion Week, Burberry for their Ready To Wear collection, introduces their line of snazzy outerwear including furs, coats and hoodies with….a noose? Keeping things consistent with their signature brown and beige, the added component was extremely off putting to most which resulted in immediate outrage. The offensive garment, much like the past incidents involving Prada and Gucci and their controversial scandal just a week prior, has since caused Burberry to remove the item.

Liz Kennedy, (model photoed above) who wore the item on the runway took to Instagram to express her feelings on the matter stating, “How could anyone overlook this and think it would be okay to do this especially in a line dedicated to young girls and youth?” Stressing also the horrific history of lynching, with claims made about people making insensitive jokes regarding suicide backstage, too. Marco Gobbetti, Burberry’s CEO, has made a statement that said, “Though the design was inspired by the marine theme that ran throughout the collection, it was insensitive and we made a mistake”.

Bombers, what are your thoughts?

Fashion Nova is Quick With It: Brand Produces Inspired Vintage Thierry Mugler Dress Hours after Kim Kardashian Wears It to Hollywood Beauty Awards

Fashion Nova lived up to their ‘fast fashion’ moniker yesterday, producing an inspired version of the vintage Mugler dress Kim Kardashian wore to the Hollywood Beauty Awards:

Kim’s dress hails from Mugler’s Spring 1998 Couture collection and leaves very little to the imagination. The dress features a high slit, and chest cut outs that reveal underboob, side boob, ribs, and clavicles.

Within hours of Kim K hitting the red carpet, Fashion Nova debuted their $50 Winning Beauty Cut Out Gown:

Many, including the Instagram account @Diet_Prada, were quick to point out the peculiar timing of the release of this inspired dress. Were Kim K and Fashion Nova plotting this release well in advance? Diet Prada writes, “Did Fashion Nova whip up the dress overnight in their Los Angeles atelier after seeing Kim in it or is she peddling her vintage finds to mass retailers ahead of debuting them for a calculated, timely release?”

Aside from our ponderings, can we take a minute for this dress? I’m trying not to use the word ‘awful’ but that word is certainly the first that comes to mind. Women with curves or women in general should be wary of this…it might be a piece better suited for the runway, a photo shoot, or music video.

One false move and you have a peep show. Because it’s Kim K, I guess we can give her a pass, but only for her (maybe). Normal pedestrians should not wear this dress! It won’t end well.

Still, Fashion Nova seems to have sold out of the dress…or maybe they pulled it after the hubbub?
What say you?

*Also, what’s up with all this cracking open of Mugler archives? From Cardi B to Kim, something is cooking.
