Claire’s Life: The 12 Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards Featuring Diddy, Kelly Rowland, Eva Marcille, and More!

Happy Friday, folks!

Yesterday, I was blessed to be in the building for the 12th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards! The ceremony, which recognizes the accomplishments of an esteemed group of black women who have made strides in film and television in the past year, has been going on for 12 years–I’ve been lucky enough to have attended 4.

The star power and energy in the room is real! While most of the afternoon feels like a family reunion, it’s also a moment to shake hands and network with celebs you admire. While there, I said hey to Diddy, Kelly Rowland, Iyanla Vanzant, Meagan Good, and more (duh, and got their outfit deets so that we could post about it on Instagram).

Powerhouses Eva Marcille, Funa Maduka, Yaya DaCosta, Bozoma Saint John, June Ambrose, Bevy Smith, Angela Rye, Luvvie Ayaji, Tai Beauchamp, Jovian Zayne, Valeisha Butterfield-Jones, Cari Champion, and Aisha McShaw were also in attendance.

I actually found out that I was able to join the AT&T table just a couple days before the event, so I was scrambling (and distraught) trying to find something to wear. I ultimately made an easy choice, plucking something from designer Sai Sankoh, which we stock at FashionBombDailyShop.com. I added Versace accessories to make it more ‘red carpet’ vs. ‘resort wear’, then got my twirl on!

@KingofHair and @GoldenKenDoll got my red carpet glam on point, so that I could get my glow on for the day.

It was, as always, a great time! We’re looking to do more with Essence in the future. Keep it locked here for details and visit Instagram.com/fashionbombdaily for all the looks from the red carpet.

*Thanks to Aisha McShaw and Tonya Lombard for the invite!

Fashion Discussion: How Much Would You Pay for Box Braids?

By Najaah Cooper (@luvnaj)

How much would you pay for your box braids? YouTube influencer and vlogger Alissa Ashley (@alissa.ashley) has the internet in an uproar over paying $750 for box braids done by Celebrity hair braider and trichologist Dr. Kari Williams (@drkariwill).

While some think this is way overpriced for singular box braids, others have expressed that hair braiders are underpaid for the work and styles that they create.

Dr. Kari Williams is the creator of #Goddesslocs and she worked with the singer @Ciara singer Brandy (@4everbrandy), and director Ava DuVernay (@ava).

What’s the most you’ve ever paid for any hairstyle? Tell me in the comments below.

Fashion Discussion: Is Black Outrage the New Marketing Strategy?

By Najaah Cooper {@luvnaj}

In wake of the recent racist Gucci and Burberry incidents, and racist politicians getting caught wearing blackface, I wonder: Is Black Outrage the New Marketing Strategy? When the internet “cancels” someone or a brand, the automatic next response is to go to the persons’ social media page and flood their mentions with negative and antagonizing comments.

With the new metrics of social media, this person or brand is now viral and is every third to fifth post you see on your feed. Usually, when a brand makes such an egregious mistake, a martyr is chosen to either patronize or pacify the masses and then all should be forgiven.

But what if we changed our reaction to racism by corporations? What if we just went silent? When a company is found promoting and or selling something racist, sexist, or homophobic, what if we immediately blocked them and reported their pages or ads? Our dollar holds tremendous power and it would be extraordinary if we could use our collective influence to really make a statement to a brand when they blatantly disrespect us.

This is not an issue of “there aren’t any black people in higher positions,” because with all of the progressive white people that voted for Obama, there must be someone behind the scenes who is a bit more aware? This is truly an issue of disrespect and someone in their marketing or press release distribution department saying “let’s see how far we can go, we need to be daring and make people talk. We want to go VIRAL”.
What do you think? Are brands like Moncler, Burberry, and Prada insensitive, or are they purposefully trying to push racial buttons for attention?
