3 Exceptional Summer Wedding Trends in 2019

Summer is an exciting time of year for everyone. But it’s especially wonderful for happy couples who are finally ready to make a lifelong commitment to one another by tying the knot. Summer weddings are not only popular, they are also the perfect time to become adventurous and come up with new and interesting wedding ideas and traditions.

As an example, over the last few years many happy couples have signed up for an alternative wedding registry. In lieu of traditional gifts, they ask their guests for financial aid to help them pay for the perfect honeymoon, put a down payment on their new home, or use the money to pay for other big expenses.

Besides that, there are other exciting summer wedding trends to consider. We’ll share our top three favorites with you below.

  1. Dynamic Colors Are All the Rage

Whether you know it or not, summer weddings are filled with bright hues and colors that really have a tendency to stand out. Not only can you use these colors to decorate the reception hall, you can also make a bold and adventurous statement and wear bright colored clothes too.

Right now, pink wedding dresses are becoming very popular. Or if you prefer to wear a traditional white wedding gown, you could always ask your bridesmaids ladies in waiting to wear pink dresses.

Or better yet, think about using sophisticated bright colors to decorate your wedding space. Strategically splash these colors throughout the wedding reception and they will make a strong, bold, beautiful statement. Think bright yellow table linens, or orange centerpieces, or multicolored bright flower arrangements. Just think about adding bright splashes to your traditional wedding colors and you’ll be fine.

  1. New Wedding Themes

Just because you’re hosting a summer wedding, doesn’t mean it has to take place in a garden or on a beach. You can switch things up and do them differently instead of using the more popular yet generic settings. Consider taking a more personal route with your wedding theme.

Do you have a favorite place to hang out during the summer? Maybe you absolutely love going to theme parks with your soon-to-be spouse. How about having your wedding at your favorite amusement park? This would be fun for everyone in attendance – especially the kids – and you and your wedding party and family members and friends will have an amazing time as you get married in a very unique and interesting place not typically known for weddings and receptions.

Or maybe you like spending time hiking in the woods. You could always have an outdoor wedding in the woods and rent a cabin and hold your wedding reception there.

Ultimately, just think about your favorite things to do during the summer and figure out if it’s possible to hold your wedding ceremony and reception in these locations. You may end up having a totally distinctive and exceptional wedding that no one will soon ever forget.

  1. Think Beyond a Typical Wedding Cake

You’ve planned everything in advance, found the perfect fairytale wedding dress, and now it’s time to choose your wedding cake. Do you choose a traditional option or do you become a little more adventurous?

During the summer, it’s always daring to pick a more seasonal selection. You can get a cake with whipped cream and strawberry filling, or strawberry shortcake, a key lime wedding cake, a cake with orange vanilla, or even a buttercream cake with summertime fruit.

Even better, think about bringing an ice cream truck to your wedding. Have them give your guests ice cream at the end of the festivities and your guests will go home smiling, happy, and feeling a wonderful sugar high.

Final Thoughts

There’s no rule that says you must have a traditional summer wedding. You have a chance to be brave and definitely different. We recommend bucking tradition just this once in order to have a memorable dream wedding that you and your guests will remember fondly for many years to come.

What Does Michael Kors’ Purchase of Versace Mean for Both Businesses?

On September 25, 2018, Vogue reported that Michael Kors had purchased Versace. The American fashion company had agreed upon a $2.1 billion deal to buy the luxury Italian fashion house currently helmed by Donatella Versace. In a statement announcing the deal, John D. Idol, Michael Kors CEO, said that “With the full resources of our group, we believe that Versace will grow to over $2 billion in revenues.” Meanwhile, Donatella Versace said that “We are all very excited to join a group led by John Idol, whom I have always admired as a visionary as well as a strong and passionate leader.” Donatella also stated that this acquisition is “essential” to Versace’s long-term success and that her passion “has never been stronger.”

The comments from Idol and Versace are as emphatic as expected, but they haven’t entirely offset doubts and concerns by fans of both brands. After all, Michael Kors is known for its sportswear fashion while Versace is an Italian luxury designer. On paper, they go together like oil and water, but could the deal actually be quite successful for the companies involved?

How the Versace Acquisition Benefits Michael Kors

Given that the company behind Michael Kors (which has now been renamed to Capri Holdings) has just put down $2.1 billion, it’s understandable that most will be concerned with how it will make that money back and why it offered up so much money in the first place.

To understand why, you need to look a little further back, to July 2017, when it was announced that Michael Kors would be buying Jimmy Choo. Business of Fashion reports that Michael Kors spent $1.2 billion on the Jimmy Choo acquisition and, at the time, Idol explained that this is because “We are creating a global luxury fashion group. Our focus is on international fashion luxury [brands] that are industry leaders.” The Versace purchase also follows this line of thinking.

The acquisition also allows Michael Kors to better appeal to the urban market, says Forbes. Versace is the go-to brand for fashionable urban musicians such as Migos’ Offset and his fellow Migos members, who wear the company’s splashy threads in order to really stand out and impress. The rap trio even made a song titled “Versace,” the official video of which racked up 30 million views on YouTube. Offset is also one half of rap’s most fashionable couple, with Cardi B, and the pair have 45.4 million Instagram followers, showing their huge influence in the space.

Likewise, Versace has also inked deals with rapper (and the creator of the Dabbing Santa sweaters), 2Chainz. While it’s unclear how many units of the sneakers (called “Chain Reaction”) have been sold, they did get everyone talking about Versace and the forward-thinking collaboration. If Versace is able to continue to pursue these sorts of partnerships, new majority shareholders Michael Kors could reap the benefits.

Why Did Versace Accept This Deal?

Things may seem a little less clear when you consider why Versace accepted this deal. But it has a lot to do with not wanting to miss out. Yahoo made a terrible decision in turning down Microsoft, says Betway in its report about the worst business decisions ever made, and Versace won’t want to make the same mistake. Microsoft offered Yahoo a staggering $44.8 billion to buy the company in 2008 but co-founder Jerry Yang turned it down. Yahoo is today worth just $32 billion and will likely never get an offer as good as that again. Versace is in a similar boat with its own finances, as, like Yahoo, it has fallen from its peak in the 90s and only returned to profitability in 2017, says CPP Luxury in a report from July 2018. The brand posted a loss during the 2016 financial year.

By waiting for a better, more lucrative offer to come along and hedging its bets that its urban appeal would be able to coax a new buyer would be a huge risk for the Italian fashion house. Whereas Michael Kors is allowing Versace to continue business as usual, using its current dealings in luxuries, accessories and leather goods to bolster its business, a different investor may not be so lenient and may want to restructure.

It’s still early days for this deal yet, meaning that a lot could change as the two businesses develop over the next few months and years. But, right now, this business deal seems to make a whole lot of business sense.

The #TommyNow Show by Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya x Law Roach: Josephine Baker, Black Model Magic, and Appearances by Grace Jones and Pat Cleveland

Last night’s #TommyNow: Tommy Hilfiger x Zendaya show took place at Théatre des Champs Elysées, a historic theater on Paris’s expensive Montaigne Avenue, where iconic performer Josephine Baker’s career took flight. With her exceedingly popular La Revue de Negre, American born Josephine Baker made her first splash on the Parisian scene, titillating onlookers with her dance moves and her sensational costumes (one of her most iconic consisted only of a girdle of artificial bananas).

It was here that Tommy Hilfiger, Zendaya, and image architect and creative director Law Roach intentionally chose to host their first Parisian showing, almost 100 years after Josephine’s first show in 1925. For years, Zendaya has served as Law’s muse and beautiful canvas for his creativity–his mini Josephine. Under Roach’s watchful eye, Zendaya has blossomed into a style icon, topping best dressed lists globally. And now, with a partnership with iconic American designer Tommy Hilfiger, the duo displayed a stunning collection that, similar to Baker’s dances of the past, titillated the audience with dancing, bouncy runway walks, and serious style.

Though Baker was given a nod with the venue, the show was staunchly rooted in the 70’s, and as the crowd filled into the theater and took their seats in the stadium like venue, they were treated to a roller skating dance party, with dancers in sparkly costumes break dancing, popping and rolling on roller skates. #TommyNow immediately established that this collection would be far from the norm.

After the initial entertainment, the show began with a 70’s soundtrack, as a cast of mostly black models of all body types stepped down a red, white, and blue illuminated runway, wearing bouncy Farrah Fawcett inspired hairstyles, and daywear to evening wear that evoked the Disco era: skin clinging jumpsuits, dresses with deep v’s, leather A-line skirts, and show stopping gowns.

As another nod to an erstwhile time, the collection closed with walks by legendary models and fashion icons Pat Cleveland and Grace Jones. Pat took to the catwalk in an iridescent dress with a pleated batwing sleeve, and twirled the length of the runway and back.

Grace Jones showed off her form in a gold belted bodysuit, and also danced the length of the runway, to the delight of the crowd.

The energy in the air was electric, the excitement was palpable, and as Law Roach later said, the night felt historic.

Tommy Hilfiger has been falsely accused of once saying he didn’t make his clothing for black people (or he wouldn’t have made his clothing of such high quality if he knew black people would be wearing it so much). Though he has debunked this wives tales in his book, American Dreamer, and on Wendy Williams, below, many in our community have still held steadfast to erroneous belief.

Though Mr. Hilfiger has cleared the air several times, last night’s show reaffirmed his commitment to diversity by not only hiring a mostly black cast, but also collaborating with a black Image Architect, Law Roach, and young black starlet, Zendaya. He sent a strong message that resonated throughout the room and beyond.
