Claire’s Life + On the Scene: Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion at the Tribeca Film Festival with Misa Hylton, Mary J Blige, Lil Kim, and More!

The other night, I was blessed to attend the Tribeca Film Festival Premiere of Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion.

Dirk Schoenberger, Misa Hylton Brim, Lisa Cortes, Dapper Dan, April Walker, Farah X

According to the creators, The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion traces the origins of fearless, full-color hip hop style and explores the women and male allies who have transformed fashion through hip hop. From the Bronx to the runways of Paris, the film leads with the journey of renowned fashion architect and new Global Creative Partner at MCM, Misa Hylton, as the first stylist to meld streetwear with haute couture. The film delves into Hylton’s most recognized fashion looks with her muses including Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige and Missy Elliot. Additionally, the documentary reveals the global cultural impact influenced by the fashion world with iconic fashion trends and styles from female designers and stylists working behind the scenes, including legendary streetwear designer April Walker, plus additional key voices behind the cultural movement (including me!).”

The event was sponsored by AT&T and MCM, so guests came through in their flyest ‘MCM fits.

Lil’ Kim

Lil Kim looked absolutely adorable in an MCM x Misa Hylton look, accessorized by a Teddy Bear bag I must have.

Mary J Blige

Queen Mary ages like fine wine! Yes to her MCM x Misa Hylton look and Jennifer Le boots!

Hennessy Carolina

Hennessy Carolina uplifted an MCM fit with neon MCM accessories and thigh high boots.

I came straight off a plane and to the red carpet! I made it work in a vintage MCM ensemble and Stuart Weitzman heels.

The inimitable Mike B was great in the movie! He looked dapper in a leather jacket and chic specs.

The woman of the hour, Misa Hylton, was electric in custom MCM and neon accented Malone Soulier heels. I need this whole look.

She grabbed a pic with fellow legend Dapper Dan and her adorable daughter Madison Star.

I love her MCM x Misa Hylton outfit! How cute!

Misa’s sons Niko Brim and Justin Combs supported their mom in MCM ensembles.

Film director Lisa Cortes was a vision in salmon pink.

Co-Director Farah X made a statement in metallic hues.

Walker Wear designer April Walker was bomb in a black body con and feather accented sandals.

Natasha Lyonne accented a black and white look with a neon MCM purse.

The fabulous Bevy Smith looked lovely in a purple ruffle accented dress and snazzy shoes.

Princess Nokia was outfitted in an MCM look .

Elle Magazine editor Nikki Ogunnaike was chic personified in a black suit.

Total singer Keisha Epps uplifted a neon ensemble with a sparkly MCM bag.

Isn’t DJ Beverly Bond beautiful? She hit the ones and twos in a custom MCM look.

Inside…

Author Elena Romero grabbed a pic with editor Emil Wilbekin.

Justin Combs posed with a friend.

Madison Star smiled with stylist Wouri Vice.

Actor Winston Duke smized next to Mary J Blige.

The gorgeous Mashonda stopped by in a leopard printed dress.

Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond plays a large part in the documentary, discussing how he uses his collections to make statements on important cultural political issues. He celebrated the night with friends.

And Misa posed with Dirk Schoenberger, global Creative Director of MCM.

It was a fun time and concluded with a performance by Lil Kim!

The documentary is a must see for anyone who loves fashion. I’m excited that the contributions of people like Misa Hylton, April Walker, and Dapper Dan are finally getting the acknowledgement and respect they deserve. This tribute was long overdue, and hopefully signals the beginning of a real movement towards true diversity and inclusion in fashion.

Keep it locked here for details on where you can catch the film yourselves!

Until then, what do you think?

Rave Fashion that Never Dies: Kinds of Thigh High Socks to Enhance Your Look

Some fashion styles never get loose from the hook. They always manage to sneak into our wardrobe unapologetically, and we happily welcome them. Just like cheetah prints, white tees and jeans.

And among so many lingering fashion statements, one fashion item which has long accompanied the rave fashion scene is thigh-high socks. No matter either you are going for shorts or skirts, thigh high socks always compliment every look. And if you are looking to spice up your look, then thigh high socks are definitely the ‘IT’ thing.

They not only keep your feet warm at night when the temperature drops, but also keep them dry from precipitation during the day when the sun is all geared up.

And what makes thigh socks super cool is that they can also be used as an accessory. Yes! Some socks like fishnet and lace ones can turn from clothing item to a lit fashion accessory in a blink. And why not? They have that spark and vibe to glorify your look.

If you are looking to add thigh-high socks in this year’s rave festival look, then here are your temptations from amazing collection of iHeartRaves thigh high socks:

Fishnet Socks:

Fishnet thigh-high socks are the best to give ‘oomph’ to your look. You neither go all covered nor expose too much – perfect to have some classy look while showing a bit of skin.

You can wear them under shorts or a skirt. And if you want to be the biggest fashionista in the town, then you can wear them under ripped pants and kick start the new fashion trend.

Lace Socks:

Remember that old era of women fashion when frilled laces were the style statement and a symbol of class and simplicity? Well, even if rave festivals have nothing to do with simplicity, you can still add lace socks in your rave outfit to give an antique and classy touch to your ultra-mode attire.

Printed Socks:

Ditching old fashion is the norm of rave festivals. And if you also want to be a signature raver all adorned in chic look from head to toe, but still want to go with thigh-high socks, then printed socks can save your rave image.

From girlish prints like butterflies and cherries, dark touch with skull prints to quirky prints like Einstein, spaceship or a whole solar system, you can choose your fashion fighter.

Scrunched Socks:

Rave festivals are all about taking your fashion sense to the next level where your fashion sense becomes the talk of the town, you become the eye candy of the festival, and people wish to look at you at least once. Scrunched socks do exactly this for you!

Scrunched socks keep your inner diva intact no matter how many colors are splashed on your outfit. And this combination of modernity and feminity is perfect for turning heads.

It is always good to have some ever-green fashion styles to make the selection process easier and to save our look. They never go wrong, no matter what is the occasion or fashion trend. Just like thigh-high socks!

Wanna Dress Like a ‘Street Artist’? Here’s How

You don’t truly have to be a renegade in order to look like one. And when it comes to street artists, they tend to dress to impress and that’s because the old adage really is as true as it ever was: ‘first impressions matter’.

Being one of the traditional fringe elements of society, street artists often draw influence from those very same fringe elements. They continuously blur the line between simply being a rebel and being on the wrong side of the law. They like to live adventurously, and there’s no better way to dress like a street artist than by dipping your sartorial toes into streetwear fashion and apparel. Premium streetwear brands and outlets like Supreme or OtherLinks are always stocked with all the essential elements that make up every street artist’s wardrobe.

Streetwear has been on boutique and shop shelves for quite a while now, originating in the mid to late 70s and evolving through the 80s and 90s. Even though it’s arguably the biggest movement in current fashion, it is not easy to define what comprises it or makes it a specific style.

What began as clothing for surfers then migrated to include skateboarders on the west coast of the United States. Over time, it began to meld with the hip-hop fashions emanating from New York, Detroit and Chicago in the 1980s.

Now, it’s a meld of both of those influences, mixed with irony, nostalgia, its own in-jokes and some tongue-in-cheek nods towards the very nature of consumerism. It’s a very, very mixed bag and as we said, it’s not easy to define. What can be confidently said about streetwear is that it’s one of the biggest segments of the modern apparel business and that over the past years a myriad of social and economic groups have remained faithful to this fashion attire: skaters, rapper, hipsters, young people and in some cases their parents.

Streetwear for street artists can be comprised of a unique blend of beanies, hoodies and jumpers, graphic tees, backpacks, headphones, sneakers and sunglasses. Now, you don’t have to be wearing all of these accessories at the same time, but it is a good idea to store them somewhere at hand (like say, a backpack) so you can change your look on the go.

Street fashion and dressing like a street artist is all about mixing and experimenting with the aforementioned essentials to see which items fit and suit you and which ones don’t.

The urban streetwear genre itself has grown and evolved immensely over the years, thanks to diehard fans and hangers-on who just can’t seem to live without it and a collection of wildly inventive designers and creative artists putting for new items at a steady clip. There are the old established brands like Stüssy or Supreme if you’re looking to spend some of your hard-earned cash, however there are more reasonable options when choosing a newer company like OtherLinks, which has been rising on the urban streetwear scene with great deals on high-quality clothing styles.

A Pair of Fitted (Not Skinny) Jeans

At the heart of streetwear is the classic denim that will look good on you regardless of what generation you belong to. Your only struggle is to find the perfect balance of cut and size. Opt for jeans with a tailored fit – not skinny jeans – but simply ones that look like they were made to perfectly suit your size and dimensions. The currently cut in jeans is to have the hem end right at the ankle in order not to break or require cuffing, as well as showing off your sneakers.

Hoodies and Jumpers

The humble hoodie is a staple in everyone’s wardrobe (seriously is there anyone who doesn’t own one?), and for great reasons, being that they are comfortable and practical. The practicality takes on a bit of a criminal bent when applied to street artistry, as it can be used to shield your identity from passers-by and security cameras. When worn in just the right way, a hoodie can actually lend an air of mystery due to being the perfect apparel for blending in and trying not to stand out too much.

Aside from the hoodie, the crew-neck sweater is making a comeback in high streetwear fashion, and we’re not just talking about your gym class-issue cotton variety. As streetwear gets on in years and goes on to greater success, some streetwear purveyors are using luxurious fabrics like cashmere – just try not to get any paint on it, for goodness’ sake!

White Sneakers

A good pair of white sneakers will always remain a timeless classic that, like denim, has not gone away and out of style with the passage of time. It is a good idea to choose between white because white shoes, especially canvas ones, age well with a bit of wear.

Leather Jackets

Sure they can cost a fortune depending on where you get yours from, but having a leather jacket in your wardrobe is absolutely essential, street artist or not. The durability will last you a lifetime, making it a worthwhile investment and elevates a simple denim and hoodie look when you need it.

Graphic Tees

More than just a subtle way of expressing yourself, there are many t-shirts on the market that feature the work of some well-known street artists, allowing you to show your appreciation for the form. You can even support up-and-coming street artists by shopping from a selection of tees that OtherLinks made in cooperation with some young street artists that goes to support them and spread their work among people.

When you’re on your way to dressing more like a street artist sure, you can buy all of the items we’ve mentioned here in order to mix and match them for best effect. But the one thing that is going to help you nail the look is the right attitude? How do you get that? Well that is surely a much bigger topic, and one that can’t be covered in a single article.

Claire’s Life: Convos with Claire Memphis with Ashley Dean, Yandy Smith, and Harrison Crite + How to Wear Pastels

It’s taken me a few days to recover from the Bomb-ness that was Convos with Claire Memphis, Tennessee! We joined forces with Memphis based boutique owner, Ashley Dean aka @DeanofFashion to put on our first Convos with Claire of 2019. Our event featured special guests Yandy Smith and Memphis’s very own Harrison Crite aka @IamHDiddy for a day full of fashion, inspiration, shopping, and fun .

With a dress code that called for pastel tones, Guests came to slay! Check out a few stand outs:

Boutique owner @ShopAri52 slipped on a turquoise blazer and matching heels.

Bombshell @Chelsie.Devonne worked a pink blazer and a feathered skirt.

The icy haired young lady added punch to a pink blazer with distressed jeans and multicolored snake boots.

Lavender was a lovely choice for this Casino owner.

This Bombshell popped on an assortment of pastel tones, including pink and mint.

A pair of Sophia Webster sandals was the perfect accent for this peach jumpsuit.

A fun fascinator was a wonderful accent to a cream mini dress.

Harrisons Crite represented for the fellas in a mint look.

Ashley Dean aka @DeanofFashion popped in a belted pink dress.

And the gorgeous Petra Thomas aka @901Covergirl won our Best Dressed contest and a trip to New York for Convos with Claire! She worked a custom petal infused creation that blended perfectly with our theme and decor.

And as for me, I dipped into my closet (!) for a multicolored dress by
@feferitydesignsbykehney . I actually ordered a custom made dress, but it didn’t quite work. Thankfully I had this on standby.

It was a great time!

Christian Siriano Plans To Work With More Men’s Silhouettes For The Upcoming Met Gala After Viral Look for Billy Porter

By: Morgan Smith (@muvamorgs)

Designer, Christian Siriano, has been gaining lots of attention in the fashion industry since he was deemed as the winner of Project Runway’s 4th season in 2008. Since then, he has worked with many fabulous women such as Michelle Obama and men as well like actor, Billy Porter. Siriano recently revealed his plans to further his work in menswear after the success and buzz generated by Porter’s fab look.

The internet was in a frenzy as the Pose actor, Billy Porter, grazed the Oscar red carpet in a…gown by Christian Siriano! Yes, a gown. Worn as a challenge to traditional feminine and masculine standards, Porter’s tuxedo dress gained him a memorable place in history as the first man to ever rock a gown on the Oscars red carpet. As a designer, Christian Siriano finds no limit to inspiration and is willing to experiment with interesting aspects in order to achieve the ultimate look for his clients. After Billy Porter’s gown broke the Internet, Siriano became even more inspired by the challenging of traditional menswear elements. At a recent panel for Virginia Commonwealth University’s fashion department, he expressed how he will be venturing more into menswear for the upcoming Met Gala and in general design. He explained further how they will be different from the classic tuxedos and feature gender fluid elements. So, be on the lookout for Christian Siriano’s looks at the Met Gala, Bombers and Bombshells!
