“Buy Black” is a phrase and movement that has been taking over social media lately. The phrase is meant to unify the Black community by simply buying from and supporting Black-owned business in areas such as skincare, culinary arts, and even…fashion. The success and recognition of work from designers like Kerby Jean-Raymond and Rihanna has proven to be quite an inspiring moment right now for Black designers, causing the industry to shine spotlights on other Black-owned brands. We have highlighted 10 Black ready-to-wear designer brands that you should know about and be shopping at:

Fenty

Founded just this year in May, Fenty is a luxury fashion house that is headed by singer and all-around entrepreneur, Rihanna. The brand focuses the freedom, physique, and overall feminine nature of the woman. Many celebrities like Bella Hadid, Mary J. Blige, and Rico Nasty have been spotted rocking Fenty!

Brother Vellies

Brother Vellies is an accessories brands that fosters the feels of African nature and culture. Founded by Aurora James, the brand creates footwear and accessories handmade on the Eastern and Southern coasts of Africa that uphold the ancestral notions of durability and spirit. The free-flowing aesthetic of Brother Vellies has even attracted the likes of our favorite down-to-earth singer, Solange Knowles.

Laquan Smith

Based in NYC, Laquan Smith is a luxury womenswear designer that creates bold, edgy pieces with a feel of which he deems as “unapologetically glamorous”. As spotted on Rihanna and the Clermont Twins, his ultra feminine collections accentuate the female form through the use of enchanting fabrics and sexy detailing such as slits or high cuts.

Pyer Moss

“If you are just learning about Pyer Moss, we forgive you” is what founder Kerby Jean-Raymond‘s shirt read when he met with Anna Wintour and Virginia Smith last year in August. Now, the industry is starting to learn about the brand that is using art to provoke conversations about activism, nostalgic Black culture, and more.

Fe Noel

Fe Noel is more than just fashion…it is a lifestyle. In fact, the brand even identifies as a lifestyle brand for women who carry the philosophy of “eat well, travel often, and dress to inspire”. Founded by Felisha Noel, Fe Noel combines glam and sensuality through the use of graceful fabrics, bold prints, and playful colors. Noel grew up around powerful women and was heavily influenced by them and her Grenadian heritage. To show her admiration for her inspirations, she created Fe Noel to encourage women to celebrate their femininity and look great while on-the-go.

Cushnie

Cushnie is a luxury womenswear brand that is designed by Carly Cushnie. The ready-to-wear brand constantly pushes for empowerment, diversity, and inclusion through its campaigns, runway shows, and even through its influential wearers like Rihanna, Michelle Obama, and Ava Duvernay. Cushnie is known for creating fashion-forward pieces that feature unique tailoring in dazzling color ways and bold patterns that is meant to embody “a refined sense of cosmopolitan minimalism and femininity”.

Sergio Hudson

Sold on the Fashion Bomb Daily Shop, Sergio Hudson is a luxury ready-to-wear label that provides statement pieces and wardrobe staples with handcrafted designs that provide women with class yet sexiness in one garment. Since its inception in 2011, Hanifa has been steadily gaining lots of attention especially with stars like Ciara and Karrueche Tran. Hanifa is a ready-to-wear brand operated by Anifa Mvuemba that offers contemporary pieces for the modern-day woman. The label offers a breathe of fresh air through 21st century design elements and delicate fabrics.

Telfar

“It’s not for you — it’s for everyone.” Established in 2005, Telfar is unisex brand founded by Telfar Clemons that unwillingly makes it known that it makes clothes for everyone through gender-fluidity in its runway shows and campaigns. As a winner of the CFDA Fashion Fund and a nominee of CFDA Award for Accessories Designer of The Year in 2019, Clemons is known for pushing the envelope through progressive and thought-provoking clothing and accessories.

TLZ L’Femme

TLZ L’Femme is headed and designed by Aazhia Rhy who started the brand with no design experience but built it up into something beyond measures through trial and error. Now, the brand is particular favorite of celebrities like Kylie Jenner and fashionistas like our very own EIC Claire Sulmers. Through her avant garde-like designs, Aazhia celebrates women through her work and created the brand with them in mind to tell a story and overall make them feel good in what they wear.

On Monday, musician Tyler Hubbard and his wife Hayley Hubbard hosted a Dolce and Gabbana dinner in the garden of the Hubbard home in Nashville, Tennessee. They were joined by the duo behind the popular blog The Home Edit, John and Clea Shearer, who co-hosted the event with the couple.

Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss is starting to become a very well-known figure in the industry. He was presented with CFDA’s 2018 Fashion Fund Award for rising stars and is known for telling stories and pushing the envelope on Black culture and activism through his work as seen through his and Lena Waithe’s Met Gala looks. Now, we are about to really get to know this designer even more as he has extended his on-going partnership with Reebok by becoming the Artistic Director of their newest division called Reebok Studies___.

Pyer Moss and Reebok’s relationship dates back to 2017 and began with a single shoe design. Since then, the two have been an unstoppable, award-winning force in the fashion industry that have brought a renewed relevance to the Reebok brand and more attention to the Pyer Moss brand. The partnership has grown into so much more than sneakers as they have ventured into clothing and accessories which features Reebok’s athleticism and the Pyer Moss modern art aesthetic.

Led by Kerby Jean-Raymond, Reebok Studies___ will create men’s, women’s and unisex footwear, apparel and accessories with a more youthful appeal with stories to tell. And, Jean-Raymond is the perfect person for this new initiative. “The creation of Reebok Studies___ supports the brand’s commitment to fostering and developing young design talent and delivering products with a purposeful story,” says Karen Reuther, Vice President of Creative Direction.“Kerby is a cultural force and masterful storyteller. The new Reebok Studies___ division will be a place that Jean-Raymond describes as where “ideas can be pushed forward.” Unlike other competing fitness and lifestyle brands, Reebok Studies___ will focus on what’s going on in fashion and society rather than just being fashion-forward. Kerby Jean-Raymond has plans to collaborate with Reebok’s talented roster which includes celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Cardi B and bring in new fashion personalities as well. That’s the purpose of the blank space following “Reebok Studies”, it is meant to leave room for a new collaboration.

Reebok’s newest division makes Kerby Jean-Raymond the first designer to ever work with Reebok on a scale this large of which the designer can’t help be feel proud about. He states, “I feel honored to be a part of such an important moment in the brand’s history. The Reebok leadership team sees a vision for the brand that’s bold and unapologetic and I’m happy to be working with them.”

Winning Looks with Pixie Cut Hairstyles for Fine Hair

It is no doubt that pixie cut hairstyles appear stylish and feminine. It is a great hairstyle to choose for ladies with thinning hair. This style adds enough volume on your hair without making the roots, and the ends appear thin. It will be hard for anyone to notice the gray colour since the pixie masks it. 

You can either opt for shorter or longer pixie cut depending on what you prefer. Ladies with fine hair look great on shorter pixie cuts, while those with voluminous hair look beautiful on longer pixie hairstyles. My phone rang at 10:45am on the day of our scheduled 11am shoot for singer, entertainer, and Love & Hip Hop Star Amara la Negra. “Hello?” I answered. “Hello, Claire, this is Amara’s manager. We are waiting in the lobby.” Though I had been up already, getting a few last minute things together before taking a 3 minute Uber to the Dream Hotel, I was pleasantly surprised by Amara and her team’s punctuality. They were not only on time–they were early. And ready to roll.

As I made my way to the venue, sweat beads dripped off of my forehead, even while sitting in my Uber on Collins Avenue. It was hot in Miami–the sun was almost abrasive, but that didn’t slow Amara down. She burst into the lobby, an explosion of flawless chocolate skin, bright eyes, and big hair with energy to match.

Amara wheeled a huge suitcase behind her, full of a variety of shoes: Christian Louboutin stilettos, Dolce & Gabbana sandals, and YSL pumps, topped off by a clear box full of jewelry and sunglasses. Amara was ready. Ready for the photo shoot. Ready for the spotlight. Ready for the world to take notice of her tremendous talent.

Though her stylist, Valentino, was running a bit tardy, Amara remained open to what we had plucked for her from FashionBombDailyShop.com. Without hesitation, she slipped on a ravishing red bejeweled Kaftan by Kaftans by Ela, which she accessorized with her own earrings, rings, and glittery Christian Louboutin pumps.

She strutted onto the white washed rooftop, twisting her hips to the music playing over the speakers, and pausing to smile in selfies with adoring fans. She was quick and her boldness was boundless. Hop onto a ledge and face the sun? Sure. Walk in vertiginous glittery heels? You got it. Put on a swimsuit? No problem. Amara explained, “I started as a child star at a very early age. [At] 4 years old, [I was] working at a major Latin network called Univision. I grew up watching amazing artists– watching how they work. I try to be as flexible as possible when it comes to working. I try not to say no. I find a solution at the end of the day, and always [come] extra prepared. If that means bringing extra accessories, leggings, stockings, whatever that needs to be done so that I accomplish my mission, I will do that.”

A few moments later, Amara’s mother showed up, just to survey the scene and make sure her only child was treated well. While I wanted to go for more subdued with the jewelry, Amara and her mother stacked on stone filled rings by Patricia Adelson, which glimmered against Amara’s talon like sky blue fingernails accented by crystals. Amara explained, “Life is too short to be basic. You should be fun and experiment and try different things, whether it’s hair styles, makeup, or wardrobe. It’s not like you’re gonna be with it forever, so why not try something different?”

Though Amara admitted to trying different hairstyles since she was six years old (when she was encouraged to get a perm because her hair was ‘unmanageable’) she quickly adopted an Afro that has become her signature style at age sixteen. She said, “I got to learn about our black history, and the history of slavery. I’ve been brainwashed this whole time to think that straight hair is what makes you beautiful. [My afro was my act of rebellion]. My hair is part of me, but it’s not who I am.”

As Amara uttered those words, her mother looked over at her, adoringly. Their bond was certainly special. Amara says, “The best piece of advice I’ve ever received from my mom is: If you want it bad enough, you will figure out how to make it happen.”

For Amara, there seems to be no limit to what she would do in service of her dream–little she would not sacrifice. She says, “I sacrificed my childhood. At an early age, I was in dance class, modeling, competitions. I don’t know how to swim, I don’t know how to ride a bicycle, I don’t know how to skate, I don’t recall playing with dolls. There are a lot of things you sacrifice. I sacrificed family, friendships, relationships, boyfriends. I sacrifice so much because I believe in my dreams and what I envision for myself.”

And for those young girls who look up to Amara, she offers, “Nothing is impossible. You have one life to live. If you see an opportunity, take it. The worst feeling is regretting not having done it. If you have an opportunity, do it. Whatever your heart wants, go for it. Let people criticize. If you believe in you, that’s all that matters. Only you know what you are capable of.”
