On the Scene: Shaun Ross X United Nude’s Launch Party

In the height of NYFW, model Shaun Ross celebrated the launch of his unisex shoes on Monday at a Lower East Side whitebox space filled with friends, family and close industry affiliates.

Ross, who is also a musician and actor, collaborated with shoe architect brand United Nude to create a heel that men can wear every day. The model told the intimate crowd of his love for the brand (he was “so stunned by the architecture inside of their shoes”) and how he made the bold move of approaching United Nude’s founder Rem D Koolhaas after a panel and pitching his shoe idea.

“We always wanted to have a heel for men that signifies us,” Ross told the crowd. “We wanted to have something that celebrates us, something that feels comfortable. Not always putting a heel on for this one special night – its a heel for when you’re going to the grocery store, you’re going down to see your next whatever, you’re going to see something corny, get the bag, whatever you have to do.”

During the event, Koolhaas later told Fashion Bomb Daily that he credits Ross with the tenacity and ability to make the design a success, something he believed he would not have been able to do if he had designed the shoe himself.

“People have asked me this [to design a heeled shoe for men] before, but I’ve always said no because I don’t know how to do that,” he said. He told Ross “if you want to do it with me and you’re going to actually promote it and you’re going to bring it to market and it’s going to be you who carries it, then I want to do it. And he said ‘let’s do it.’ ”

Guests were able to see the new Shaun Ross X United Nude product on display, high and low leather boots with a square-toe and geometric block heel that comes in both black and white. A few lucky invitees including Roman Sipe, Ross’ best friend and design partner, wore the structured footwear at the event.

“I have so much support, I look around me and I look at all of you guys, and you know it’s fashion week and there are so many A-list celebrities everywhere but this is the real celebrities right here,” Ross gestured to the crowd. “You guys took the time out to come celebrate me and something I’ve been working hard on.”

Known names who came out to support the model-turn-shoe designer included Ty Hunter, Claire Sulmers, Karrueche Tran, Diandra Forrest, Margie Plus and Tiffany M. Battle. DJs Coco and Breezy kept the crowd moving and Ross’ friend Rush Davis, featuring The VVorld, also gave a soulful performance.

It was pure black boy joy as Ross danced like nobody’s watching, surrounded by fashionable supporters and industry heavyweights at this new juncture in his career.

Show Review: Kim Shui SS20 Show Challenges Body Norms and the Idea of Femininity

This has been quite the year for the Chinese independent designer Kim Shui as she has been spotted on big time celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Hennessy Carolina, endured copycat remakes from Fashion Nova, and was placed on Forbes 30 under 30 list for Art and Style. All in all, these were big wins as it placed the Kim Shui on the map as an independent designer to watch, making her SS20 collection as one to look forward to.

Kim Shui’s SS20 RTW collection fosters late 90s, early 2000s Grunge feels with a clear message of rejecting societal norms. The SS20 combined classic notions of Chinese traditions through use of Cheongsam and Qipao-styled garments with a heightened sex-appeal illustrated through cut-out back detailing, laced up plunging necklines, and the use of sultry fabrics like mesh and lace.

The alluring details are meant to show women that we should be embracing our femininity despite society’s efforts to denounce what is sexy and what is not. She also uses varying body types to challenge common body norms and promote body inclusivity to show that every woman can be sexy. The collection also plays with old-timey European elements of fashion with its incorporation of French lace thigh-high stockings and floral corsets.

We’re a few days into New York Fashion Week, and Romeo Hunte’s collection has managed to produce angular edginess for your not-so-average streetwear! After all, as the famous saying goes, “It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it”. And it has been proven.

Show Review: Pyer Moss SS20 ‘Sister’ Show Focused on Black Influence on Rock ’n’ Roll

Pyer Moss premiered its highly anticipated Spring/Summer 2020 show and let me tell you…it was well worth waiting a year. Earlier last week, WSJ featured Kerby Jean-Raymond as a “disruptive” designer due to the fact he doesn’t stick to the typical fashion week schedule, putting on one show a year. Many viewed this initiative as a potential failure, but Kerby Jean-Raymond once again proved them wrong.

Weeks before the show, the Pyer Moss Instagram posted a link to sign up for tickets, giving away 500 free tickets to non-industry attendees. Of course, I didn’t hesitate to sign up and to my surprise, I got a show confirmation email a week later. As a Black woman in fashion, this show was so important to me and I just couldn’t miss it. I was already in NY for fashion week through a program with my school, so I skipped my flight back home to Virginia to attend the show. I camped out on my friend’s sister’s couch all day till it was time to get ready, then I took an 8-hour bus ride back home only to make it back just an hour before I had to be in class on Monday morning. Do I regret any of this? Not at all, because the show was every bit of worth it.

A Production that Told a Story

The story didn’t start in the show, it started outside as a massive crowd lined up around the block at King’s Theatre in Flatbush. One could hear Megan Thee Stallion and Lil’ Kim bumping out of local drivers’ windows.

One thing that sets a Pyer Moss show apart from others is the story behind each collection and the fact it is carried out as a full-fledge production, giving us a true show. The SS20 collection was dubbed as Sister: the third collection of the Pyer Moss “American, Also.” three-part collection and it is centered around the “contributions of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the black woman who invented Rock ‘N’ Roll”. The show began with soothing musical notes from singer, Brent Faiyaz, along with pianist, Mike King. In addition, author Casey Gerald delivered a captivating story and word about Black people’s influence on pop culture and how our stories have been erased by society. Gerald ended on an uplifting note by stating how we need to embrace our freedom and individuality which the collection illustrates in many aspects.

The Choir Took Us to Church

Like with the 2018 show, the wondrous choir made a return and with new vocals, taking attendees on trips through various genres including gospel, R&B, and hip hop. They performed performing hit songs such as Make Me Over Again, The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) by Missy Elliot, and Sweet Love by Anita Baker, furthering contributing to the mood of Black excellence and freedom.

The Musical-Inspired Designs

While the music selections and mood were amazing touches, we can’t forget the fashion! The runway styles were filled with free-flowing garments in vibrant Spring hues of yellows, sky blues, and rose reds. Homage to Rosetta Tharpe and various other Black female musicians was paid through piano key detailing on tops, guitar-shaped bags, and black musical artist in abstract printed art. Pyer Moss previewed upcoming pieces for its continued partnership with Reebok, and also showed off collaborations with Sean John, Resonance, and Richard Phillips!

 Filippo Fior / Gorunway.com

As usual, Pyer Moss did not disappoint with its SS20 “Sister” production which was culturally vibrant in more ways than one. I am already looking forward to next year’s runway show.
