On Saturday, October 5th, a grand opening was held in Atlanta, Georgia for first looks into Tyler Perry’s new creative studio called Tyler Perry Studios. While the night was to celebrate the opening of the historic studio, the evening was dedicated to the Black icons who inspired and supported the creation of such a space.
Tyler Perry spoke about the studio at the 2019 BET Awards, hinting at its opening and speaking on the true meaning behind its formation. Tyler Perry stated how he wished to show the kids of the “poorest Black neighborhood” in Atlanta in which the studio was built that they could be as successful as the dedicated legends of the space.
It is a lot to take in regarding this moment in history, so we’ve gathered 5 facts that you should know about the studio:
Tyler Perry Studios will go down in history as one of the largest production facilities in the country at over 330 acres! Ava stated in a tweet last evening that the facility is big enough to fit Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, Fox, and Sony inside with acres still left to pair. In addition, this placed Tyler Perry as the first Black man to own a major movie studio in the country as well.
2. It was dedicated to Black entertainment icons.
Described as a place “where one hundred years of Hollywood design meets 21st-century technology“, Tyler Perry Studios is home to 12 soundstages which assist with production needs and each comes complete with “wooden perms, catwalks and silent HVAC systems”. Each soundstage was named after influential Black entertainers including Denzel Washington, Cicely Tyson, Oprah Winfrey, Spike Lee, Della Reese, Halle Berry, Harry Belafonte, Sydney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, Will Smith and the late Diahann Caroll who received the most applause and recognition of the evening.
3. It’s a former Confederate Army base.
The studio was built at Fort McPherson which served as a former Confederate Army base during the Civil War, supporting the cause to keep Black people enslaved in United States. The base was active from 1885 to 2011 and served as “one of the largest command centers in the U.S. military”.
4. It’s more than just a studio, it’s a community.
Tyler Perry created Tyler Perry Studios with this lingering dream in mind: “I want to own a network where you can turn it on with your family all day long and get positive reinforcement.” In other words, he wanted to a build a community of like-minded creatives with resources for creativity and much more. Besides the soundstages, the acres of land also includes a 220-acre greenspace which fosters room for amenities like a motel, coffee shop, oval office, a historic district, and more.
5. Tyler Perry was backed by the industry’s biggest hitters!
Though Tyler Perry shouted out his influences and inspirations, they were already in support of the filmmakers advancements in addition to several other celebrities. Other supporters included Ava Duvernay, Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Spike Lee, Colin Kaepernick, Angela Rye, and yes, Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Beyoncè even shared a letter summing up the historic evening and congratulating Tyler Perry on his achievements, ending it with “you inspire me to dream even bigger“.
Black excellence was alive and well on Saturday and it will continue as long as this space exists. So, thank you, Tyler Perry.
On Wednesday, October 4th, 2019, the world lost a pioneering figure of class, grace and utmost style, Queen and Lady Diahann Carroll. Fashion Bomb Daily remembers and pays tribute to one of our iconic figures in fashion. The timeless diva was 84 years young, and passed away due to complications from cancer, her daughter reported to credible news sources.
The leading lady of African American actresses & style refinement was born in the Bronx on July 17th, 1935. Carroll was raised in Harlem, growing up with legendary greats like Billy Dee Williams. No doubt the young Queen was destined for Hollywood and greatness. She recieved numerous awards and much deserved recognition, including Naacp Image Wards, a Tony, a Golden Globe and also an Academy Award for her portrayal as a hard working single mother in the hit movie “Claudine” in 1974. Each role showed her versatility as a woman of glamour, but also empowerment and independence.
The singer, model and leading lady actress had so many power roles in Television and movies. She is also widely know for her role as Dominique Deveraux in the hit Television series “Dynasty.” Her appearance and character on the show changed the game of fashion for all women, putting luxury stand out gowns, paints suits, furs, and no-nonsense, lady like upscale clothing, flawless hair, makeup, class and sophistication in the forefront of style.
She will forever be missed, and in our hearts. We celebrate her legacy along with Tyler Perry, appropriately dedicating his new Tyler Perry Mega Movie Studio in Atlanta this past weekend in her honor at it’s grand opening. Long live the memory and unforgettable contributions in culture, art, activism, and fashion of the amazing Queen, Ms. Diahann Carroll.

Many came out to support Travel & GIVE for their second annual Travel With a Purpose fundraiser on Saturday evening in Manhattan. The organization had a goal of raising $20,000 to fund programs they currently run in Kenya and Haiti.
Philanthropic guests were able to support by donating money on the spot, or by participating in the silent auction and raffle. Throughout the evening host, Brandhyze Stanley of Blue Bloods and Orange is the New Black, reminded guests that they are able to also support Travel & GIVE’s goals by volunteering their time and, or, talents on one of their future trips.
Three change-makers whose work has impacted his or her respective communities were also recognized that evening: Sean Williams, founder of The Dad Gang, received the Global Empowerment Award for the work his organization has been doing to dispel the negative stereotypes around black fatherhood. Brian Asingia, co-founder of Dream Galaxy, received the Global Educator Award on behalf of his co-founder Franko Abott and their organization which is an education distribution platform that focuses on storytelling.
The third recipient and special guest, Wamaitha Mwangi, flew in from Nairobi, Kenya for the event. Mwangi is the founder of Angel Centre, the primary orphanage in Kenya that benefits from this Travel With a Purpose fundraiser. Angel Centre rescues abandoned children and care for them until they are adopted. Angel Centre currently houses 48 orphans ranging from newborn to 9 years old.
The self-funded center provides these children with food, clothing, medical care and education. Fundraisers such as these along with the assistance from organizations such as Travel & GIVE as well as individual assistance, is what has kept the Angel Centre in operation since it opened its doors in 2010. Mwangi received the Global Advocate Award.
“There are a lot of abandoned children in Kenya and most of them end up dying because they are left in dumpsters, they are left in hospitals, some of them are born premature and then the hospitals do not have enough equipment to take care of them,” Mwangi said. “So the mothers that are from poor communities end up running away because the [newborns] that get into incubators, the bill becomes so high it’s easier to let it go.”
Although Travel & GIVE visits Haiti three times a year since its inception in 2016, this year was their first trip to Kenya where they went on a clear two-part mission. At the Angel Centre orphanage they painted, installed security locks, installed outdoor clothing lines, provided food for four months and funded 22 children with school fees for the remainder of the year. Additionally, they launched a multisensory digital program into seven schools in the Nairobi area. The self-sustaining digital program in the form of an app will allow students to have a digital learning experience.
In an emotional speech Martine Harris, co-founder of the organization, recalled how her own cousin who was born deaf and blind in one eye was adopted by her family in the U.S. because Haiti did not have the resources to help him. This inspired their work in Haiti.
“With travel and give I want to provide knowledge to teachers and caregivers in Haiti on how to create that inclusive learning environment for everyone who has disabilities and learns differently,” she said.
The organization is currently preparing for their next trip to Haiti in a few weeks.
