Brand You Should Know: Somewhere Jugn + An Interview with Designer Deschell Clifton, “I Sold 200 T-Shirts in a Month and Knew I Had a Great Idea. I Got THE JUG.”

Happy Friday, folks!

It looks like New York city will be on lockdown, but we’ll still be pumping out content here at FBD! Today, I wanted to introduce you to Somewhere Jugn, a line of urban streetwear luxury created by California Native BooBagzbe:

BooBagzbe started the brand in 2008 just with the name, “Somewhere Jugn,” an observation a Chicago based friend made after spying BooBagzbe always on the scene, hustling aka Jugn. The clothing line launched two years later, after friends kept asking the man about town for merchandise. After selling 200 t-shirts in one month, BooBagzbe knew that he had a great business concept, and he decided to pursue it seriously.

He says, “The name came from getting money, just traveling. Either way it goes, everybody is Somewhere Jugn, you have to get money to pay your bills. So Everybody Jugn. It’s really a culture that people can see. I’m just bringing it to life.

Since BooBagzbe launched his brand, it has been embraced by influencers and celebs like Offset and many more.

While the Somewhere Jugn brand now experiences success, the road wasn’t always easy. BooBagzbe confesses, “The challenges are finding a good manufacturer and people who take you as seriously as you do. It’s just like music, you can get robbed in this game. You can pay for a service and not get what you’re looking for.

He continues, “”You gotta keep moving. Sometimes that will make you want to quit doing what you’re doing. I’ve lost $15-$20,000 but you gotta think, there are other people who have lost more. You can’t really be scared. What you’re worth now, it will quadruple because you already know what you have to do, what you’re aiming for, and what not to do. Everybody will make mistakes. You can’t just come in and think there won’t be mistakes. Everyone will take a loss, it’s a part of the game. If you can’t understand taking losses, you just need to go work for someone one else and wait for your check to come.” Alright!

How Tech Is Reshaping the Fashion Industry

For the last decade, the fashion industry has evolved significantly, and the online market alone is projected to reach over $1 billion value by 2030. And for e-commerce by 2022, it will constitute 36 percent of all fashion sales. With the release of new devices every day, that has opened many doors for customer engagement. As technology touches on various fields in the enhancement of a speedy way of doing things and efficiency, fashion has greatly benefited through the new tech revolution affecting everyone globally via personalization. Fashion enthusiasts can today capture brands such as Fendi new releases using multiple devices at the comfort of your home.

The more Artificial Intelligence (AI) translates to more success of fashion retailers and easily helps to reach out to their consumers. Many changes have been experienced in the fashion world through the increase of a better tech approach daily. Let’s see how technology is helping to transform the fashion industry.

Technology is Automating the Fashion Industry

From reputable fashion brands to startups are taking advantage of the technology to understand their customers than ever before better. The more sophisticated things get, AI will redefine brands’ approach to development and product design, focusing on how to predict what customers would like to see next.

Instant Gratification

After the Second World War, the fashion industry has been categorized into seasons spring, winter, autumn and summer lines debut on runways. The four seasons are broken in this style to allow brands to take time to gauge their consumers and retail interest. When fashion brands are at the introduction stage, and new releases are put on shelves, brands can assess the demand to manufacture the right amount of apparel for the season.

Major brands are now capitalizing on the speedy process of fast fashion by making sure the clothes reach shelves immediately after the runway. Now many brands are thriving on agility and speed. Through technology, the brands are able to come up with a new design or trend and deploy their hyper-rapid design and supply chain systems for quicker market release of the new product.

The quick manufacturing process allows fast fashion brands to beat traditional labels when it comes to marketing. The speedy process has prevented counterfeit garments and accessories appearing on shelves after runways before the originals are released.  The near real-time ability to push trending fashion on shelves early allows the fashion brands to consider coming up with a better approach on how to cater to the preference of smaller, additional targeted segments of consumers.

Sustainability

As the brands get more involved in the concept of fast fashion, they are shying away from the negatives fast fashion brings on board. Now consumers are slowly taking the clock back for slow fashion ideas, which pays attention to sustainable materials, transparent process, manufacturing and ethical labour. According to a research carried by Lyst search engine in 2018, there was an increase of 47 percent of consumers leaning more on products that have ethical and style qualifications. The sustainability concern is prominent among the young generations. The millennials who are about 83 percent in the US are looking for brands that consider environmental factors according to the Conference Board Global Consumer Confidence Survey.

The study also shows that 75 percent are ready to change their consumption habits for sustainable products that add value. The new startup fashion brands that are aligning themselves in this sense will reap big. Consumers are nowadays focusing on a brand that not only provides them with what they want with speed but also cares about the sustainability of the products. Brands such as Allbirds has taken the challenge positively and is coming up with durable shoes designed from eucalyptus leaves.

Now many brands have embraced the slow fashion movement, and the rise of a fast-fashion model and social media are continuing to play a big role in transforming the fashion industry.

Rapid Iteration and Production

Through the use of technology in the fashion industry, the new startup brands are finding it easy to join the industry as the starting costs have significantly gone down. For instance, Etsy has made it easy for everyone to start their online shop and build a customer base. The costs that used to kill young brands are no longer an issue as the decrease makes it feasible for them to produce small runs of products at a realistic margin.

High-end brands are also evolving how they approach the market to better position themselves and compete with fast-fashion retailers. A great example is the Tommy Hilfiger brand that had to overhaul the entire system and shorten the process from 18 months to 6 months of production. Technology has enhanced this speedy process, and now other brands are joining the likes of Tommy Hilfiger to target their consumers better and sell products fast.

Conclusion

The fashion industry is more advanced and scaling to higher heights due to technology. From manufacturers, designers, stylists, retailers and consumers are connected by technology. Through automation, many roles are going to be replaced as the sophistication process continues to get better each day. The technology effect will keep changing things and systems in the fashion industry, plus how the role of a designer to brand shifts get.

We’ve Got Time: 5+ Things Celebs Like Cardi B, Ciara, and More are Doing to Stay Entertained During the Corona Virus Quarantine

As the days go by, the threat of the Corona Virus taking over our cities and consuming our lives continues to mount, and authorities are urging everyone to stay inside and only leave their homes for necessary runs to the grocery store or the doctor. Events have been canceled and our lives are on pause until further notice.

While I’ve continued to work, testing out beauty products and creating content for brands like Kreyol Essence, Lovely Bright Smile, and more…

… it seems our favorite celebs are oscillating between being scared out of their minds or just having fun!

Behold five + things some of our faves are doing in the latter category to pass the time.

  1. Playing Games. Or Running Into Them.

Cardi B recently posted a video of her running into a Jumbo Jenga board, while Claudia Schiffer played backgammon wearing Etro Spring 2020.

Whether you’re playing a board game or break dancing on one, both are fine options to keep spirits high.

2. Turning Up on Tik Tok

Tik Tok is an app full of fun dance challenges–fun for the whole fam as Ciara and her crew displayed. This app is perfect for large families, especially those with kids, who want to have fun. Nene Leakes and her family also did the “Baby Come Give Me Something” challenge.

Fun for babies to the mature, and everyone in between!

3. Producing Corona Virus Songs

Comedian Lala Milan Created a song called F*ck the Corona. We couldn’t agree more.

4. Doing Beauty Tutorials

Need to do a video conference with your coworkers? Make sure your face is beat in a flash with The Lip Bar’s Fast Face kit, as displayed by the company’s owner Melissa Butler. Get a full face in 7 minutes using 6 products. Bomb! Being quarantined doesn’t mean you can’t be cute for those video chats!

5. Working Out

Jeanie Mai is still hitting the gym–in her living room–maintaining her ab status with a waist trainer by What Waist.

Others have been cooking up a storm and eating through two weeks worth of snacks in one day (ahem, me. Reenactment below from @ThisIsJessicaRose).

As for me, as I mentioned, I work from home, so this time is just like normal, minus the social outings. I’ve been keeping busy by working out (jumping rope is a great at home work out), watching many fashion documentaries (this list needs to be updated), planning for the Fabys and our fall events line up, adding new items to FashionBombDailyShop.com and creating content!

I refuse to let this situation dampen my spirits–I am making the most of it as many of our celeb friends are displaying.

We encourage you to do the same and try to look at this as an extended staycation. Catch up on sleep, call your parents, try out those beauty products you’ve always wanted to try, or watch New Releases.

GOD willing, the world will get back to normal soon. And when it does, we will have an even greater appreciation for each other and for the beauty of LIFE. And if this doesn’t encourage you to tackle those big items on your bucket list with the realization that Life Is Not Promised, I don’t know what will.

Love & Light,

Does Bape Owe Ty Hunter a Check for His Check On It Shoe Design? Brand Releases Inspired Design for New Bapesta Sneaker Heel

A clip of Beyoncé bopping in a pair of high heeled Bape sneaker heels for the “Check On It” video has been making the rounds on the internet lately, leading many to wonder their origin.

The fabulous, funky, pink heels were the brainchild of Beyonce’s then stylist Ty Hunter, who told Complex Magazine that he created the heeled sneakers for the pink themed video because Mrs. Carter needed shoe options that simply didn’t exist on the market. Complex writes, “It was Hunter who purchased the pink patent leather Bapestas at a store and decided to add a heel to them.” His design was inspired by the Manolo Blahnik Timbs Beyonce wore in her Bonnie and Clyde video. Hunter told Complex, “I thought those boots were the coolest thing. They were so sexy. And I took the [Bape] sneakers to Miss Tina and said, ‘These would be cool if they had a heel,’ and she said, ‘Give it a try.’ This is before the sneaker tennis shoe or the sneaker heel had even hit.”

https://twitter.com/yakihair/status/1155482787752960001?s=20

After hitting up Hymie Zelaya, who used to put together Destiny’s Child’s costumes, for a heavy-duty glue he used to customize shoes, Complex says, “He spent the night constructing them, cutting off the top of the sneakers for a more feminine silhouette and then adding a pink patent leather heel to the sole.”

At the time, Bape didn’t have sneaker heels–but perhaps inspired by the resurgence of the popularity of the clip and the recent buzz around it, the brand has decided to release their first heeled sneaker. The styles below are set for a March 21 release:

While Hunter created the silhouette for Check On It, perhaps BAPE can send him a Check for It–besides the concept was his, and Beyonce said in the clip below that they were the “Only High Heeled Bapes.” Bape also told Complex that at the time, Bey’s pink options were the only Bapestas with a heel.

What do you think? Does Bape owe Ty Hunter a Check for his creativity for the Check On It Video?

Top Ten Videos of 2020: Blue Ivy, Meghan Markle, Ciara and Russell Wilson, and More!

Happy Hump Day Fashion loves!! Let’s take a look at Fashion Bomb Daily’s Top videos from the month of January and February of 2020. This time can be used to rejuvenate, and unwind, but stay focused and use your days wisely! Fashion Bomb Daily has great things in store for our devoted readers and followers to keep you entertained and informed!

10. Number ten goes to Jay-Z and Blue Ivy attending a Lakers NBA basketball game. The daddy/daughter date included a one on one convo with the king of the court Labron James encouraging Blue Ivy as Sean Carter looks on. We love the way Jay-Z takes time to be a “girl dad.” Definitely why this is on our top ten list.

9. Number nine of our top videos goes to the impressively gorgeous Meghan Markle and oh so handsome Prince Harry. The lovely high profile couple stole the show and social media recently when they attended the Mount Batten Festival of Music in complementing royal red ensembles. Meg wore a Safiyaa dress with red pumps and a matching Manolo Blahnik clutch. They are a favorite to many of celebrity duos. Their fashion sense is astounding and refreshingly sophisticated. No wonder they made the list.

8. Tracee Ellis Ross is next on the list, she wore a beautiful gown to the Oscars this year designed by Zuhair Murad, styled my Karla Welch. In the video she does a perfect “cheery” freestyled song and joyous rant about Brad Pitt, the veteran actor received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance this year in “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.” Tracie’s mood is priceless and fitting for most women whom adore Brad as an actor and Hollywood hunk.

7. Kylie Jenner, Kim & Kanye West took our number 7 slot on our video list. For the Oscars, the three star studded family members wore impressive statement pieces as usual. Kylie wore a “navy body-hugging sequined gown from Ralph and Russo for the high profile awards show. Kim took her look to another level “in a piece of fashion history Wearing Lee Alexander McQueen’s famed “Oyster dress” from his spring 2003 collection, Kardashian West channeled the energy of one of the early-aughts’ best runway shows perfectly.

One of only two that made it into production, the look was a Christmas present from Kardashian West’s husband, Kanye West. Purchased from Rita Watnick of Lily et Cie.” Noted by Vogue magazine. The only other other gown resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection. It sure made a huge fashion statement to say the least. Kayne wore a simple black leather suit and sunglasses.

6. Ciara looked breathtaking at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in a Ralph and Russo bespoke black mesh draped dress embellished with metallic crystals. The singer song writer takes the number 6 position on our list. Ci-Ci was a vision as she posed pregnant with her second child with football hero Russel Wilson. Our appreciation continues to grow for Ciara and Russel with each public appearance.

5. Halima is the 5th video on our top ten list. “The magnificent model wore a custom-made Black Atelier signature pleated fan gown from by Fang” to the Vanity Fair Oscar party, styled by Katie Keim She took a strut down her hotel hallway and stunned social media. She is an unforgettable face of the runway & fashion for 2020 and beyond.

4. The Ralph Lauren gown Janelle Monae’s wore to the 2020 Oscars was a trophy within itself. It takes our number 4 spot on the most viewed video list. Styled by Alexandra Mandelkorn, the dress adorned “168,000 crystals over lacquered silk lame tulle.” What did you think of her look?

3. Nicki Minaj aka “Black Barbie” looked absolutely magnificent in Marc Jacobs at the designer’s Fall 2020 show during NYFW. She takes our #3 video spot respectively. The daring hiphop artist always makes an entrance whether it’s music or fashion and chic, stand out style.

2. Another Oscar red carpet entrance took 2nd place on our top viewed video list. Madame Cynthia Erivo from the hit film “Harriet” wore iconic Versace as she made her way into the awards ceremony, adoring fans cheered her name.

1. Numero uno on our most viewed video list goes to, drum roll please….Kerry Washington! The A list actress and gorgeous mom takes the top spot on our list in a flawless multicolored, beaded and jeweled two piece tribal print ensemble by Zuhair Murad, for the 2020 Oscars. Her impeccable look included gold Sophia Webster heels and Azza Fahmy jewelry. She was the perfect mirror image of a 2020 Egyptian Goddess. What do you say about her wardrobe statement? The COVID-19 situation continues to escalate rapidly. We are all concerned. Fashion Bomb Daily wants to encourage everyone and assist, we put together these tips in addition to what we already know (e.g. wash your hands, stay home, etc). . .

  1. Stay encouraged. Remember, “tough times don’t last, tough people do”. Please stay mentally strong and know this too shall pass.
  2. Have empathy towards each other. We are all affected. Never assume any person is more or less affected than you. There is often more than what meets the eye.
  3. Creatives, freelancers, small business owners, service / restaurant workers will find their income / revenue seriously impacted. Till the govt announces fed relief, be sure to check on your local or state dept website for relief that may be available. If you work for yourself or own a small business (may apply to creatives, influencers, etc), check on your eligibility.
  4. Check on each other. In case of a lockdown, people who live alone will be in isolation by themselves. Be sure to check on each other during this time.
  5. Help in any ways that you can. Those who need it are likely closer than you think. Check on friends who work in the service industry, hourly, etc. Check on your house cleaners, favorite tasker on taskrabbit, etc. Most people won’t tell you they need help, so just send them money without asking if you can. I guarantee you they’d appreciate it.
  6. Silver & Riley is still awarding the two grants of $1,000 this month. We recognize small businesses need this now more than ever. We are working having the ability to award more grants.
  7. In case of a lockdown, please stock up on non-perishable items today.

CoronaVirus and Chill: 5 Must See Fashion Documentaries Including The September Issue, UnZipped, and More!

Currently stuck inside? Add some levity and indulge in the following must see fashion documentaries:

1. Bill Cunningham New York

Bill has been snapping editors like Anna Wintour and Kim Hastreitor, dandies like Patrick McDonald and Shail Upadhya, and fashionistas like Anna Piaggi and Iris Apfel for 50 years. What was most striking about the exposé was the dichotomy between what Bill records and what Bill lives. He sits front row at fashion shows here and abroad, but he himself doesn’t own even a wardrobe full of clothes. He leads a very simple life in an apartment consisting primarily of filing cabinets and a twin sized bed. His most prized possessions are his bike and his camera. It’s fun to see his evolution and inspiring to observe his humble and tireless devotion to the craft.

2. The September Issue

This one’s a no-brainer. Go behind the scenes with Anna Wintour, the most powerful woman in fashion, as she and her editors at US Vogue prepare the all important September issue. Tune in especially for cameos from Grace Coddington and Andre Leon Talley.

3. Unzipped

Unzipped is a hilarious look at what designer Isaac Mizrahi went through as he planned and ultimately showed his 1994 collection. You’ll love Mizrahi’s infectious enthusiasm and appearances by ‘top’ supermodels, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Kate Moss. You’ll also get fun glimpses of Padma Lakshmi and Carla Bruni (now Sarkozy). Bonus: you can watch this one in its entirety on YouTube.

4. Seamless

This flick, released in 2005, focused on four young designers as they competed for Vogue’s CFDA Fashion Fund award: Alexandre Plokhov of Cloak; Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler; and Doo Ri Chung of Doo.Ri. Though some names might seem familiar now, they were relatively unknown during filming–some were still working in their parent’s basement trying to make it. Out of the other films I suggested, this one is pretty slow (and borders on boring), but is a must if only to give you a background on some of the industy’s hottest talents. To whit: We see Proenza Schouler winning the CFDA Fashion Fund in 2004; they won the CFDA award for womenswear designer of the year in 2007 and are nominated again this year.

5. Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton

Though significantly shorter than other films, this option offers a look at Marc Jacobs before he was the expertly chiseled, diamond earring sporting glam god he is today. Cameras follow him from Paris to New York and back as he prepares his Marc Jacobs line and collections for Louis Vuitton.

Those are just my favorites, but there are many more that I haven’t seen: Christian Dior: The Man Behind the Myth (2005), Valentino: the Last Emperor (2008), Lagerfeld Confidential (2006), Notebook on Cities & Clothes (1989) (which follows Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto), Signe Chanel (2006), Viktor & Rolf: Because We’re Worth It (2005), Fashion Victim: The Killing of Gianni Versace (2001), Yves Saint Laurent – His Life and Times/5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris (2004), Catwalk (1996), and the BBC documentary The Secret World of Haute Couture (2006).

Those are on my ‘to-see’ list.

What are some of your favorite documentaries?

*New Yorkers, Bill Cunningham’s documentary stops showing April 7th at the Film Forum. Click here and get your ticket before it’s too late!
