Questions about GAP’s Collaboration with Telfar Arise in the Midst of Kanye West Yeezy Deal

News of Kanye West’s Yezzy collaboration with the GAP caused many to wonder about the retailer’s scheduled collaboration with another Black Designer, Telfar.

According to Complex , “[The] Telfar x Gap collaboration came to a halt back in March due to the coronavirus lockdowns and widespread store closures. A Gap representative said the company ultimately decided to shelve the project indefinitely. What’s even more disappointing is that a source with knowledge of the situation claims the Telfar team has not been paid for the Gap deal—not even a purported postponement fee Gap had offered.

From a purely business standpoint, the pivot for GAP makes sense. Kanye’s popularity trumps Telfar’s a million fold. That said GAP still has an obligation to Telfar. Who knows, perhaps there’s a way for Telfar and Kanye to collaboration on the ultimate collection?

The State of Fashion: Virgil Abloh Predicts A Black Fashion Renaissance + Kanye West and Mowalola at the GAP, and More!

What a time it is to be a Black Person in the Fashion Industry!

StreetVibe.com

The Black Lives Matter movement thrust a spotlight on racist practices in every country, city, and industry. Of course the fashion world was not immune. Andre Leon Talley unwittingly lit the match with his Chiffon Trenches tome, and afterwards everything seemed to explode with former workers from every corner of the style industry from media to retail to corporate revealing discriminatory practices (we wrote about it here).

What followed? Lots of black squares, apology posts from fashion brands, and promises to do better. Fashion Bomb Daily reached out to some of the companies accused of the most egregious errors (Revolve, Anthropologie, and Bando). Guess what? No response.

But even in the midst of the same old, same old, we have seen several advances. Lindsay Peoples Wagner (Teen Vogue EIC who famously penned an article on what it’s like to be Black in Fashion for New York Magazine) and publicist Sandrine Charles launched the Black in Fashion Council, writing, “The Black in Fashion Council was founded to represent and secure the advancement of black individuals in the fashion and beauty industry. As a collective, we envision a world in which black people in fashion and beauty spaces can be open and honest, guaranteed equal rights, and be celebrated for our voices.”

Other initiatives include the 15% pledge, founded by Aurora James of Brother Vellies, requesting large retailers to pledge 15% of their shelf space to black designers (Sephora and Rent the Runway have already signed on). Read more at 15PercentPledge.org.

In addition, Kanye West just announced a collaboration with The GAP. The creative director will be Nigerian born British based Mowalola Ogunlesi of the brand Mowalola:

And we have influential people like Virgil Abloh publicly committing to support black talent. Abloh told Fast Company, “I believe there’s going to be a Black Renaissance…Before I felt very alone in this struggle, but now, people are ready for change. The atmosphere is different.” We agree.

This all portends very favorably for diversity and inclusion in the fashion industry. Unlike generations of the past, those in our community seem more willing and able to open the doors for those on the side and behind them. They’re able to pull up a seat at the table.

We’ll continue to report on the progress of the movement.

Our sincere hope is progress for black creatives in fashion. If you have a dream to excel, your skin color should not be a deterrant.

Kanye West Announces Multiyear Partnership with The Gap

Kanye West, who once called himself similar to Andy Warhol and Walt Disney, and lamented his lack of support in the fashion industry, has come upon an amazing opportunity: to transform heritage American retailer GAP with his singular Yeezy Genius.

West, who once worked as a manager at The GAP before becoming an uber successful rapper and producer, has returned to the retailer full circle. GAP announced today that Mr. West has inked a multiyear deal creating clothing for men, women, and children.

Kanye West’s sartorial predilections in the past few years have certainly leaned more towards GAP’s subdued style vs. the Givenchy wearing, Louis Vuitton backpack slinging, Goyard case toting looks in which he burst onto the scene.

I think this will be a beautiful partnership, and I can’t wait to see how the West, Kardashian, and Jenner families embrace it.

Fashion Bomb Men Style Spotlight: Bishop TD Jakes in Fendi, Robin’s Jeans, Off White, and More!

So we at Fashion Bomb Daily are GOD fearing people, and regularly watch Bishop TD Jakes sermons for the good word (if you don’t watch the Potter’s House on Youtube, click here. You’re missing out!).

In between learning the word of the Lord, we couldn’t help but notice that Bishop Jakes has a penchant for style! Bishop has worn everything from your typical suits to satin Off-White shirts, and even a little Fendi and Versace!

Take a look at some of our favorite TD Jakes ensembles:

@ KathyTranx

He most recently posted a belated birthday flick, wearing a jersey, sneakers, and $655 Robin’s Moto Jeans with Quilted knees.

For his Bother Me Sermon, he wore a $925 Off White shirt.

It went on sale for $693 before it sold out.

A Versace baroque polo was his choice for one Sunday Sermon.

And few of us could forget this color coordinated ensemble, where First Lady Serita Jakes stunned in a Fendi dress, while Bishop posted in a navy and gold suit.

Bishop Jakes is successful, not just from preaching from also selling books and public appearances. If he loves style, why can’t he express himself?

We are here for it!

Virgil Abloh Tells Fast Company That His Support of the Black Community is “Glaringly Obvious”

Cancel culture is the wave right now. For better or worse, celebrities and public figures seem to get zero mercy when it comes to public missteps. Such seems to be the case with Off White owner and Louis Vuitton Menswear Creative Director Virgil Abloh.

In recent weeks, the Ghanaian American has come under fire, first for seemingly bemoaning the damage done to stores by looting more than the unjust deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and then for appearing to only donate $50 to the cause. He has since apologized and clarified his words and motives, but judging by comments on our channels, he is far from forgiven.

Abloh exclusively went to Fast Company to tell his side:

“I’ve taken all the (negative) feedback into account,” he says. “But the one thing I would say is that if you’re privy to my work, it’s clear what side of the line I stand on. If you’re privy to the fact that I’m a Black business owner, and that I’ve hired Black people at an industry-leading scale, it’s glaringly obvious that I stand with Black people.”

“I accept the circumstances of this position,” he says. “With great opportunity comes great responsibility. My goal is to lead by example.”

In the article, he says that he is already working with Louis Vuitton to increase diversity internally, and also plans to support other black designers breaking into the industry.

It sounds wonderful. I can’t wait to see what Virgil does next.

Vote for Fashion Bombshell of the Week: Will it be Sasha from Pennsylvania, Vey from Texas, Theresa from Rhode Island or Rachel from Wisconsin

Sasha from Pennsylvania says, “I’m Sasha a multifaceted creative from Bucks County PA! Fashion is my guilty pleasure! I express myself with what I wear. My fashion tells a story without saying too many words.” She describes her style as, “colorful yet calm, fierce, unapologetic, ghetto fabulous at times and so much more. In simplest terms I wear whatever I want to wear without any approval from anybody but myself! If I like it I’m going to wear it!

Being accessory driven has motivated me to open my own boutique. Accessories are my aesthetic it brings that much needed flare to any outfit for any & every occasion. Check out my accessory boutique with trendy & affordable styles @sashasaccessorysecret.

Next is Vey. Vey writes, “Hi, I’m Vey. A visionary, creative director, blogger (TVEY)  fashion designer & wardrobe stylist from Austin, Texas. Fashion is not just fashion to me, it’s art. It’s a form of expression without saying a word.” “Here’s a few of my own looks, a few of them designed myself.”

She continued by saying, “I’ve always enjoyed feeling good and looking even better!  I find much joy and sharing that feeling with my Clients or potential clients as well! I aspire to style such celebrities as, Ariana Grande, Claire Sulmers, Beyoncé, Sanna Lathan, Lebron James & many more. I can’t say I know exactly what the future holds for me but I can say I WILL NOT STOP!

Our third contender is Theresa. She writes, “My name is Theresa Seyi, I’m from Rhode Island and I’m a style and beauty influencer. The name of my brand (blog, YouTube Channel, Instagram) is Fly Fierce Fab, and I create style content in the form of outfit posts, haul videos, and look-books for women who want to look expensive on a budget without compromising quality. My mission is to empower women to live their best lives, and look good doing it. By day I work in a biotech lab (and you can only be so cute in a lab coat all day), and after work I stunt lol. I’ve always loved fashion, and to quote Regine from Living Single “I don’t wear outfits, I create looks.”

My style is super feminine, urban, and I like to get a little sexy sometimes. Growing up I did a lot of pageants, and dressing up was my favorite part. All through college money was pretty tight, so I learned really quickly how to shop for pieces that look expensive but didn’t have the price tag to match.

Lastly we have Rachel from Wisconsin. She writes,  “I am Rachel Vasquez, a serial entrepreneur from Milwaukee, WI . My fashion is edgy, classic, and my own kind of sexy. I allow my fashion to speak for me  without changing for Society. I create , I live out loud!
