On Saturday, tennis player Naomi Osaka was all that was trending on social media as she won the US Open Women’s Singles final against Victoria Azarenka! This is now Osaka’s second US Open title and her third overall title, having won the 2018 US Open and 2019 Australian Open. Not to mention, she went down in history on Saturday as the youngest woman to win her third major title since Maria Sharapova in 2008!

Throughout her seven matches, Naomi Osaka used her sports style and platform as a star player to shine a light on the injustices plaguing the Black community and honor her influences like her familial roots and the late Kobe Bryant:

She was spotted at each of her matches wearing face masks bearing the names of police brutality victims including Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Philando Castile, Ahmaud Arbery, and Elijan McClain.

Naomi Osaka also honored Kobe Bryant by wearing a Lakers jersey with his number after each match, expressing by how the late basketball player “gave her strength”. Bryant served as an influential figure to many people including Osaka who was mentored by the basketball legend.

Lastly, Naomi Osaka celebrated her win in the finals by honoring and showing appreciation for her Japenese-Haitian heritage. In a tweet, she thanked her ancestors, “I would like to thank my ancestors because everytime I remember their blood runs through my veins I am reminded that I cannot lose.” She commemorated the moment in a Grass Fields $53 African Print Carlotta Top (worn as a dress) and $33 African Print Ummona Headwrap (sold out).

So Atlanta is open! And on Friday night, boss Bombshell and hair magnate Ming Lee held a Casino themed party at the Gathering Spot. The guest list read like a who’s who of who’s hot on Instagram.

Century 21 Files for Bankruptcy and Will Close All 13 Stores

After 60 years, Discount retailer Century 21 joins the growing list of retail stores to file for bankruptcy during COVID-19. Known as “New York’s Best Kept Secret”, the retailer known for its discounted designer goods will be going out of business and closing all 13 of its stores located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.

In a press release, the company’s decision to close stems from “nonpayment by the Company’s insurance providers of approximately $175 million due under policies put in place to protect against losses stemming from business interruption such as that experienced as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.” In meaning, there was a failure in payment of $175 million by the company’s insurance providers which was meant to help Century 21 in recovering from the September 11th attacks in 2001. Ultimately, Century 21 made the tough decision to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy to ensure an “orderly wind down”.

Century 21 CEO Raymond Gindi and co-CEO IG Gindi expressed, “From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all of our dedicated and hardworking team members for their countless contributions, including continuing to give 100% throughout this pandemic to take care of our customers and each other. We will be forever grateful for the vital role they played in building the Century 21 legacy hand in hand with our family. Together, we hope we can help our loyal customers create some final memorable Century Stories.“

Century 21 is current open and planning its going-out-business sales both in-store and online.
