Black Sportswomen Who Set the Fashion Bar High

For most sports men and women, clothing is all about functionality rather than looking good, with blood, sweat and tears usually putting paid to any attempts at a fashion statement.

However, that does not stop some of the best black athletes in the world setting new standards in the sport and the fashion stakes.

Here are just some of the black women turning heads in the ring, on the mat, court-side and in the water.

Laila Ali and Claressa Shields

Both these women claim to be the GOAT in their sport of boxing and have even made noises about the daughter of Muhammed Ali coming out of retirement so that they can battle each other in the ring.

It would be hard to choose where to place your free bet for that fight, especially seeing as the two atheletes’ combat styles are so different.

The same can be said for their style out of the ring, with Shields keeping it real in classic tracksuits and Ali keeping a flawless power woman look going on.

Simone Biles

There is no doubting Biles’ greatness, with other gymnasts having practically given up hope of ever matching her athletic capabilities.

The US star also knows how to dress up when she wants to, sporting slashed jeans or hot pants at home and going up a gear by wearing flowing elegant dresses on the red carpet.

Serena Williams

When you have dominated a sport as much as Serena Williams has then you can wear whatever the hell you want both on and off the court.

The younger Williams sister is all about pushing fashion boundaries, whether that is in tight black cat suits or pink tutus.

When she is not bossing the ladies of the WTA Tour, she even has her very own fashion line called S by Serena. Just take our money now, Serena, and keep doing what you do!

Simone Manuel

Simone Manuel defied expectations at the Rio 2016 Olympics, bringing back a major medal haul from her time spent in Brazil.

Out of the water she tends to opt for a low profile and dresses accordingly, sticking to the humble attitude and style that took her all the way to the pinnacle of her field.

Kanye West’s Recent Antics Cause GAP Stock to Drop

Gap’s stock has fallen nearly 6% following comments made by Kanye West over the weekend at a public event (During this public event, Kanye stated, “I am not on the board at GAP and that has to change today or I walk!”).

Gap, who has been struggling lately, announced a 10 year partnership with Yeezy in June of 2020. The new clothing line, which has been described as “modern elevated basics for men women and kids” was said to release in 2021 at an accessible price point.

The initial announcement sent Gap’s shares sky rocketing by 19% on June 26th. The stock has lost half of its gains since then.

We are not sure exactly what triggered the decline: his threats to leave the Gap or scrutiny surrounding Kanye West’s recent rants! One thing that is clear is the drastic effect he has had on the brand in such a short period of time.

Vote for Fashion Bombshell of the Week: Will it be Andrea from Texas, Nicole from NYC, Naomi from New York, or Roberta from Wisconsin

This week we have four lovely contenders in the running for Bombshell of the Week. First, lets get into Andrea from Texas.

Andrea, or Dr.Andrea is an OBGYN doctor who’s style is very feminine, flirty and timeless. Most of her ensembles feature a fun skirt or dress, paired with heels and complimenting handbag. Check her out below.

Next is Nicole from NYC. Her style is also very flirty but in a very minimalist way. Her silhouettes are less dramatic and not accessorized much but still grab your attention.

Also from New York is Naomi. Her attire is very bold and features lots of prints. Whether its cheetah print or plaid, these prints seem to be the focal point of her looks.

Last but not least is Roberta from Wisconsin. Roberta is model who’s style is very bold and sexy. Most of her outfits have a revealing element which she balances out nicely.

Which bombshell blew you away? Vote below.

The CFDA Reveals Its 2020 Nominations for Designers of the Year: Few New Names, Little Change

In response to the Black Lives Matter Movement, Fashion Bomb Daily took the initiative to outline a list of the Top 100 Black Designers the World should know. Understanding that 100 was not enough room to fit the depth and talent in the black community, we created a 2nd list, and are adding to it, weekly (we are currently at 62; if you would like your brand added, email thefashionbomb@gmail.com). That’s a total of 162 designers, who have dressed celebrities, been worn on red carpets, and created burgeoning businesses.

Even with all this new information, the CFDA continues to go with the same old, same old. In an article in the New York Times by Vanessa Friedman, the writer reveals that the same names from past years are nominated for awards this year:

Nominees for Womenswear designer of the Year? Brandon Maxwell, Marc Jacobs, Gabriela Hearst, and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Tom Ford.

Menswear? Kerby Jean Raymond of Pyer Moss, Tom Ford (again), Thom Browne, and Todd Snyder.

Accessories? Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Telfar, Gabriela Hearst are among some of the names.

While Christopher John Rogers is nominated in the Emerging Designer Category, and Virgil Abloh is nominated for Global Menswear Design, it simply seems as if it’s the same old names we’ve heard and seen before. While all the nominated designers are extremely talented and befitting of the nominations, what about letting in someone new?

Friedman notes that many designers nominated, including Telfar, Jean-Raymond, Marc Jacobs, and Tom Ford have all won or been nominated several times over before. She writes, “Maybe [the CFDA Awards] can become something more than simply notches in a designer’s belt, or an insider’s club that may feel, to those looking in, like a secretive fashion cabal.”

We at Fashion Bomb Daily definitely sent in our nominations, which included Sergio Hudson, Laquan Smith, and Victor Glemaud–designers who have dressed the A-list and made names for themselves in the industry. Perhaps there simply aren’t enough nominations for these designers. But still, Friedman suggests creating a new or special category, which I support.
