New “High on Heels” Documentary Explores High Heels from A to Z

We see it everywhere. Men appreciate them. Women adore them. They make regular appearances in the office, meetings, restaurants, parties, dance floors, grocery stores, TV shows, movie scenes and even street corners. High heels have a signature role in mainstream society and are quite the fashion statement in pop culture. But, where did it come from? How did it get here? Why is it so popular? What does it represent? And, where is it going? A new documentary entitled, High On Heels, sets out to answer these questions and more. The film now streaming on Amazon Prime Video delves deep into all things high heels by highlighting it’s daily impact on women’s livelihood.

High On Heels was directed by Adelin Gasana, a documentary filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia. He teamed up with producer Lola Kayode on this insightful, well-balanced piece. It took the team about 15 months to complete this fashion film from concept to completion. Knowing how ambitious it was to pursue such a big topic on the subtle accessory that is the high heel shoe, Adelin Gasana talks about his creative approach. “We wanted to take on this subject matter from a fly-on-the-wall perspective, ” Gasana recalls. “From that vantage point I directed the film on the outside looking in. The women featured open up on their passion, experience, outlook, love, and hate for high heels.”

From the classy pump, comfortable wedge, sexy stiletto, and exotic platform high heels are an experience for women. They symbolize women’s highest attributes in society worth aspiring to–professionalism, style, maturity, empowerment, confidence, beauty, sexiness and sophistication. They are also a source of women’s personal experience with discomfort and pain. High On Heels paints the portrait of high heels as character in Western society by connecting its historical evolution with the nuance of women’s lifestyle. For young girls heels begins as a rite of passage into womanhood and maturation. As they evolve into young adulthood heels become a loss of innocence in the move toward what is beautiful and what is sexy. As a conversational piece, the film provides an insightful look and perspective on the role high-heeled shoes have on women’s everyday lives. Designers and entrepreneurs talk about the business side of high heel products bought and sold in today’s diversified marketplace. Models and dancers working in their industry chime in on the role heels play in their careers. Influencers and historians provide input on the multidimensional change heels continue to make in today’s culture. Doctors add forewarnings on long-term use on women’s health with solid medical reporting.

So, what inspired two independent filmmakers to convey a mainstream topic in a documentary film portrait? Adelin Gasana remembers an earlier conversation he had with Lola Kayode on her back pain associated with high heels and why she regularly sees a chiropractor. It was in those telling conversations that Gasana thought such a documentary would make for an interesting project worth bringing to life. From there their conversations extended to a diverse range of women working in many different industries from entertainment, retail, health, and academia.

Nothing is left out in this new documentary. It doesn’t take a side on whether heels are a mark of sexism which feminists have been debating for years. Nor does the film discourage young women in wearing heels due to potential health ailments that may come. The film dares not to favor one heel style or heel type over the other. Instead High On Heels delivers an undiluted look on heeled shoes as a cultural mark in our diverse world as well as a fashion statement that means something more than just a shoe for women. You as the viewer do walk away hearing a frank, honest discussion of the good, the bad, and the ugly. A historian/curator opines in the documentary, “High heels can never be neutral.” But, it’s you, the viewer, who decides what to take in and what to think about not the other way around.

Fashion Bombshell of the Day: Raha from New York

Today our Fashion Bombshell of the Day is Raha, a fashion model from New York, check her out below.

Raha writes, “If I were to describe my style, first I would have to describe how I view clothing. I love pieces that accentuate waist definition and allow me to accessorize whether it be with belts, layering or just implementing items I’ve thrifted.”

She continued by saying, “Being edgy and over the top is my normal, so I am always looking for ways to surprise myself and use clothing in ways that may not be traditional. We have to push fashion and the limits that many people are used to seeing. “

Raha definitely has a unique style. What do you think? Let us know.

Things to do in Nantucket in the Winter

When people dream of a Nantucket vacation, they usually conjure images of sun-filled days spent by the ocean. The reality is that Nantucket is also a fantastic place to visit in winter! It will show you an entirely different perspective of the destination and provide a truly memorable experience.

Why to visit Nantucket in the Winter

There is no denying Nantucket makes a great summer vacation, but that does not mean it is not great in the winter too! The beachside town transforms into a charming, winter wonderland (sometimes even with snow) that offers super cosy vibes. This is enhanced even further if you visit around the holiday season when Christmas trees appear in the streets and sparkling lights lace every window. You will also get to make the most of the reduced prices and crowds.

Things to remember when visiting Nantucket

Obviously if you are visiting Nantucket in the winter, you will need an entirely different wardrobe than a summer vacation. Swap out your shorts and cotton dresses for warm jackets and comfy boots – you will be grateful you came prepared!

You will also need to go through the typical trip planning activities: picking your dates, finding accommodation, arranging transport to get there. If you live in the United States, it is likely to be a bit more straightforward than if you are coming from overseas. Simply jump in the car or book a domestic flight and you are on your way!

For international travellers, you will need to consider a few extra things including currency exchange and time zones (best to be prepared for any potential jet lag). You will also need to do your research and understand the entry requirements that apply to you. For some people, this will involve applying for a USA ESTA form. The ESTA is an online pre-check that will confirm your eligibility for entering the USA. You can only apply for an ESTA if you reside in a country that is a part of the visa waiver program. For people who are not eligible for the ESTA, you will need to get a traditional visa.

The ESTA process is simple and completed entirely online. The ESTA questions address your personal circumstance and travel plans so that you can be assessed for entry into the country. An approved ESTA does not mean you are exempt from going through border control upon arrival, however, it is likely to make the process a bit quicker. It is best to apply for your ESTA several weeks before your departure date to make sure it gets processed in time. If you leave it too late and there is an issue, you may be denied entry or even the boarding of your plane altogether.

Things to do in Nantucket in the Winter

As mentioned previously, Nantucket makes a great winter vacation destination. Instead of sipping on cold rose by the beach you can warm up with a hot chocolate by the fire! There is something truly magical about Nantucket in winter and we recommend you go to experience it for yourself.

If you are wondering what you can do in Nantucket during the winter, we have compiled a list of some of the things you should not miss.

Downtown Nantucket

Grab your warm, comfy shoes and head out for a stroll in Downtown Nantucket. In winter, you will not have to fight the crowds, so you will get to actually experience the charm of the area. The fronts of the stores are likely to be decorated for the festive season, creating a fun, merry vibe. When you get too cold, make a stop at one of the many cafes and restaurants. Places like the Cisco Brewery remain open throughout the winter so you can even stop in to try the local brew. You can also indulge in some retail therapy (perhaps Christmas shopping if it is early in winter) at the diverse range of little boutiques. If it becomes too cold to be out, pick up a good book and find somewhere comfortable to spend the afternoon. The Nantucket Atheneum is a particularly good spot to settle in with a good book!

Nantucket Aquarium

If you are looking for an indoor activity to get out of the cold weather, consider a trip to Nantucket Aquarium. It is located in the Nantucket Harbour and houses a whole range of local aquatic species. What makes the aquarium especially unique is that the collection of animals changes each year! Nantucket is a seasonal aquarium that updates its species each summer depending on the animals living in the area. Even if you visit annually, no two trips will be the same!

Nantucket Kids Activities

There are also plenty of family-friendly activities to keep the kids occupied during winter. Consider adding these to your itinerary to keep the young (and young at heart) happy.

  • Visit the candy shop

What kid does not love candy? Force Five Water sports looks like a standard shop, but head inside and you will spot a little candy store. It has a huge range of candy that will satisfy all tastebuds.

  • Try the hot chocolate at Handlebar Cafe

There is no better way to warm up from a cold day exploring than with a cup of sugary hot chocolate. Head to the Handlebar Cafe to treat the whole family with some of the best hot chocolate in town.

  • Explore the Whaling Museum

Looking for a rainy (or snowy) activity? Visit the Whaling Museum. You will learn a lot about the industry and even the young ones will be impressed with huge sperm whale skeleton.

Christmas on Nantucket

Nantucket comes alive at Christmas time. The streets are lined with impressive Christmas trees, twinkling lights decorate houses and shop fronts, and everyone is full of Christmas cheer. There is special about strolling the cobblestone streets during the festive period. You can also attend a range of events from cookie decorating sessions to ugly sweater competitions.

Conservative Shirts: Mixing Fashion and Politics

Every time a political issue comes up or gains attention in America, you see people exercising their rights and voice out their opinions in peaceful (and some not-so-peaceful) protests. You see people take to the streets and show their patriotism by wearing their political affiliation: Republican and Democrats. You see people walking around wearing American flag clothing, democrat shirts or perhaps even conservative shirts. But why are Americans obsessed with these political clothing and why are they popular?

Political shirts are easily available anywhere in America. These political shirts (democrat or conservative shirts) come in different styles and designs and often have thought-provoking quotations on them.

American’s fascination with expressing their freedom of expression is most pronounced during important holidays such as Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July, or even the weeks leading to national elections. But if you pay attention, you can observe people wearing these shirts all year round. These shirts may seem simple, and made of ordinary material, but they manage to both inspire and divide people. This leads you to wonder whether wearing democratic or conservative shirts can create social change.

Freedom of Expression

Clothing has always served as a person’s way to express themselves. You can tell a lot about a person with their taste in fashion, so it is not surprising that people use clothing to express their political beliefs and opinions as well. The recent wave of activist-inspired clothing not only shows the solidarity against the current political setting, but it is also a way for people with the same political beliefs to bond with each other. Whether it be shirts, tunics, or jackets, political clothing have messages that stand out as a visual marker for what the person wearing them believes in. This has the potential to be a powerful catalyst for change.

Political clothing isn’t limited to the runways alone—it can be found on a more common or grassroots level too. Many DIY artists and creative experts have also been creating and coming up with culturally appropriate and virally strong clothing, promoting their merchandise on online platforms such as Etsy, as a way to take a stand against issues such as prejudice, racism, fake news, and social injustice. Unlike large-scale fashion brands, which takes weeks to months to develop these apparel, independent designers can just easily release these clothing within a couple of days.

Catalyst for Change

Political clothing, such as democrat and conservative shirts, can serve as important conversation starters. You’re able to encourage and empower people to stand up for and speak up on issues that matter to them. Political slogans have been around for as long as anyone can remember, but they are more visible now that more and more people are starting to exercise their freedom of expression. The words and letters in our garments have power—they had power in the 18th century, and they have power even today. If you look into the French Revolution, colors were showed to express one’s support for various political factions. In the early 20th century, wearing white symbolized support for women’s suffrage, and today wearing pink has come to symbolize support for women’s rights.

It was not until the 1960s and 1970s that fashion apparel actually began to get political. This was during that time that silkscreen printing became popular. This technique made it easier for anyone to print customized shirts with text expressing their opinions during the Vietnam War protests. Nowadays, people use these shirts as a way to vent out their frustrations. Political clothing gives people a way to express their opinion and make their views known. It’s a way to add cohesion to different political groups and to show support for those who feel the same way as them.

Wearing political clothing like conservative shirts can be considered as a sartorial form of coming together. When you wear a shirt showing your political affiliations, you’re not only making your beliefs known, but you also identify yourself with a larger group of individuals who feel the same way as you do. It’s a great way to show someone that you’re on the same team.

Fashion and Politics: A Great Match

People wouldn’t normally associate fashion with political movements, but these two have long been intertwined as far as we are concerned. Fashion has always been a way for both men and women to express their social and political views. Modern political fashion trends may not be the same as those of centuries ago, but fashion continues to be one of the most effective and accessible way of expressing your beliefs and standing up for them.

When you look at any society around the world, you’ll discover that there are instances where politics have influenced its fashion. For example, in the 18th century, some Englishmen wore short, colorful suits with eccentric styles to oppose the more traditional Whigs. Even the type of fabric worn can be used to indicate the politics of international trade at certain points in history.

As technology has made it easier to disseminate new information, a new political climate has emerged—one that’s both confusing and divisive. People from all walks of life are free to broadcast their political opinions on social platforms that reach hundreds, to thousands, to millions of people. But social media activism has not replaced fashion’s role in politics. As a matter of fact, some trends in political fashion have garnered even more exposure on social media, allowing them to extend their reach to more people.

Expressing your views can be as simple as putting the right words, images or hashtags printed on a shirt or apparel. Political fashion, such as democrat and conservative shirts, do not have to be subtle—they can be bold, loud, fearless, and clear!

Besides t-shirts, bags and hats can also be used to express one’s political sentiment. Take Trump’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) cap, for example. Items like this allow one proudly and confidently express their belief system in a blunt and unapologetic manner.

Regardless of your political affiliation or belief, you have the right to use your clothes to express them. Fashion is more than just about matching colors and styles—it is a way to express who you are inside and sharing them to the world.
