Black History Month on Fashion Bomb Daily: Donyale Luna

Long before Naomi, Tyra, or Iman first set foot on a runway, there was Donyale Luna, the first black woman to cover Vogue and arguably the first African-American supermodel.

Born Peggy Anne Freeman in 1945, the 6’2” stunner arrived in New York City in 1964 to much success, and was soon traveling the world, appearing in Paris Match, walking for Paco Rabanne, and appearing in several films.

Of her success, she said, “Back in Detroit I wasn’t considered beautiful or anything, but here I’m different… They were looking for a new kind of model, a girl who is beautiful like you’ve never seen before.”

With long limbs, wide eyes (played up by blue or green contact lenses), and a regal stance, she attracted lots of attention. Luna’s career continued on an upward trajectory for most of the late 60’s and early 70’s. In January 1965, a sketch of Luna appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. That same year she signed an exclusive contract with photographer Richard Avedon.

In 1966, she appeared on the cover of British Vogue (she allegedly covered her nose as not to offend readers). In 1967, Adel Rootstein fashioned a mannequin in Luna’s image.

My her legacy live on.

EUNICE W. JOHNSON was the illustrious founder and director (1958) of Ebony Fashion Fair, a fashion tour that pioneered the use of black models AND black designers.

She was one of the first black client’s to Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, & Oscar de la Renta; and even notably placed the first black models for Valentino & Pucci.

Starting off as hospital fundraiser, the fashion tour quickly became an annual fashion event that highlighted fashion for black women.

 

 

 

 

 

 

In its 50 existence, the tour visited 200 cities across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean, raising over $50 million for charity. Sold in the leading department stores, Johnson created Fashion Fair Cosmetics in 1973, an answer to the lack of diversity in makeup for black women. Along with her husband, publishing giant John H. Johnson, they created Negro Digest, Ebony & Jet magazine.

Recently, kid model Ryleigh Madison and her friend Zayden took to Instagram to share their recreation of Barack and Michelle Obama‘s 2021 Inauguration looks. Ryleigh channeled her inner Michelle Obama mimicking the Sergio Hudson ensemble from head to toe. She even nailed her side-part hairdo! Zayden also executed Barack Obama’s look perfectly with his very own mask and double-breasted coat.

South Carolina native-designer Sergio Hudson even showed love to the two four-year olds in an Instagram post: “Thank you guys for all the love. I have been tagged and sent hundreds of remakes and dedication pics. Meredith Koop and I could have never imagined when we were cooking up this look how many of you connected to it. Instead of me trying to post all of them here is my favorite by Ryleigh Madison.“

After delivering three sets of Ivy Park x adidas gear to us last year, Beyoncé teases with a new drop dubbed as “Icy Park”, taking us to the slopes with streetwear-inspired gear. The “Icy Park” campaign video was complete with familiar faces including singer Kaash Paige, model Hailey Bieber and Mr. Icy 1017 himself Gucci Mane. Judging by photos from the IVY PARK Instagram page, this particular collection will feature a stylish monogram print on a few pieces of the upcoming collection. With logo mania showing no signs of slowing down, this was a smart move on Bey’s end. She even provided us with a glimpse rocking the monogram print in a recent campaign flick.

Beyoncé was spotted in the IVY PARK x adidas “ICY Park” campaign rocking a pink monogrammed two piece set which featured leggings and a long-sleeve crop top.

Hailey Bieber also wore a pink monogrammed set for the campaign, however she wore the biker shorts along long-sleeve crop top, a pair of sneakers and beanie from the forthcoming collection.
