Rihanna hit the town last night in New York City in a $635 Balenciaga Blue off the shoulder jacket, a $3,590 YSL blue blazer, $720 The Attico Amber pumps, and an Eastpak x Raf Simons backpack. 

Her jacket is from Balenciaga’s Fall 2016 collection, and features contrasting black panels to the shoulders and arms with reflective pipping.

Golden buttons highlight the double-breasted closure on this menswear-inspired blazer tailored with strong shoulders and peaked lapels for an ultrasharp look.

Her Amber pumps are a white leather high heel slingback with an ankle strap.

Coming 2 America premiered on Friday, and the stars of the movie enjoyed the premier of the movie safely and virtually! Breakout actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who plays “Mirembe” in the film, attended the virtual premier rocking a stunning orange look which would’ve turned heads on an on-person red carpet.

Nomzamo Mbatha wore Tony Ward Couture Spring/Summer 2021. Her dress featured a draped tangerine detailing along with an intricate crystal sleeve and detachable hood. She also wore Jimmy Choo “Shiloh” crystal sandals (sold out). For accessories, she went with Mahrukh Akuly earrings and Noa Jewelry rings.

Her look was styled by Harrison Thomas Crite. Her makeup was done by Tara Lauren with her hair executed by Donte Smith.

Essay: April Walker of Walker Wear Accuses Virgil Abloh of Off White of Stealing Signature “WW” Design

|Dear Fashion Industry,

Last week, the text messages flooded in all at once. “Congrats!” “woah Saks is big time April!” “good look with the Walker Wear on Saks”…. Huh? I opened up my phone to see my namesake “WW” design on a “swaggy” white male mode. The price tag was astronomical. The vibe? Casual appropriation. The problem? It wasn’t my jacket…”

It was Off-White’s brand.

I’m sick of big fashion house creative looters that do drive-bys and steal derivative works and original designs from independent designers that actually birth originality. These big fashion brands “make and take” and appropriate these designers without credit, compensation, or permission, until they’re called out.

I surmise there are a few reasons that this viscous cycle has perpetuated itself since the beginning of time. It could be a lack of creativity, lazy genius syndrome, or a sense of entitlement. The fashion industry is a mirror reflection of America. It’s the spirit of elitism and “whiteness” is the strongest benefactor. These European Fashion Houses bank on the fact that most independent designers will be outgunned in legal proceedings so designers are often disregarded or considered invisible. They’re assumed a non-factor. Let’s add some colors and layers to this equation. Try being POC as a black or brown designer, and then add the wild card to it…gender and the inequality, where women are often trampled upon quietly.

I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me not be rude. My name is April Walker of Walker Wear. I’m the founder of one of the first fashion brands that helped to pave the way for the multi-billion dollar industry coined as streetwear today. I’ve been in this game for a little more than three decades now, and as the the first female designer to hold court and dominate in this streetwear lane, I’ve had my share of experiences and I don’t take them lightly. Gracefully, Walker Wear has remained agile and stayed rooted in our foundation…hip hop culture. We pride ourselves on creating timeless classics and staples with quality over quantity.

As makers and creators, Walker Wear recently experienced creative theft, and to add to the sting, it was on the heels of Black History Month. As we walked into Women’s History Month, I noticed in an Instagram ad that Off-White introduced a WW Letterman jacket that felt too close for comfort in the design. It was a classic design that we’ve been using for years. As these DM’s started rolling in, and the phone started ringing, there were many confused tribe members trying to figure out what was going on, was it a collab, some were infuriated and felt that the design was disrespectful to say the least.

Walker Wear Design vs. Off White Jacket

There are so many layers to unpack here… the timing of it all, the WW’s on an Off-White Jacket, the similarity and likeness of my design, the fact that I’m a Blexican woman and it was done by Virgil Abloh. It felt intentional…like a strong and deliberate chess or jack move, maybe both.

As a founder and legend in this space, I’m flattered that some creatives have been inspired, but the best way to pay homage is to do just that, without duplicity and forgetting to give credit where credit is due. The problem that exists here is a lack of integrity, lack of respect for culture and a lack of appreciation for women. The irony is that without me and others that have created this streetwear lane, Virgil wouldn’t be here today. I keep wondering if this would have been done to one of our male fashion legends like Karl Kani or Dapper Dan, but I’m guessing that since I was a woman, there wasn’t a second thought.

Here’s the thing. There’s a new day dawning. Women will not be trampled over any longer. We will not be dismissed. We will not be exploited. Independent black and brown designers matter and are essential to creating a healthy eco-system. We are here for real change. We are here to empower and pave the way for the next generation of fashion game-changers and the only way to do that is to think about sustainability as “a people and planet”.

Joie Chavis has been on everyone’s fashion radar lately as she always graces Instagram rocking the freshest and latest brands. In a recent Instagram post, she expressed her feelings about LA’s wishy-washy weather while rocking quit the winter weather-ready look.

Joie Chavis wore a $1,298 Frame puffer vest, $1,295 Gianvito Rossi “Marsden” over-the-knee leather boots and $495 Amina Muaddi “Begum” crystal earrings. She completed the look with what appeared to be a mock-neck long sleeve and leggings combination or a mock-neck long sleeve bodysuit.

After so many teasers and pushbacks, Coming 2 America is finally here! After almost 30 years since the first Coming to America hit theaters, the second serves up just as much fun and comedy with leading star Eddie Murphy as King Akeem. Not to mention, the fashion is to die for, all thanks to award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter and her team. We caught a glimpse of Teyana Taylor’s looks from the movie, and you know we’ve got details.

For one look, Teyana Taylor as Bopoto wore a gold ensemble by Laurel DeWitt. The look included a bralette, gorgeously-adorned headpiece and what appears to be a long skirt. Each piece was complete with gold plating and chain-like detailing.

For her second look, Teyana Taylor’s character Bopoto appeared in a black and gold look by Cylinda Nesmith Davison. The garment appeared to be a one-piece with flared leg openings and a cutout chest, complete with gold royal-like accents throughout.

All looks for the movie were curated by costume designer Ruth E. Carter and her team which included Tanja Caldwell, Erinique Ellison and Cylinda Nesmith Davison. Ruth E. Carter also served as the costume designer for the first Coming to America as well as other notable movies like Black Panther, B.A.P.S. and Malcolm X to name a few. She is the First Black woman to win an Oscar for costume design and first Black costume designer to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is the second costume designer ever to earn such an achievements in both categories.

For the film, the fashion still remained regal but with a modern twist. Ruth E. Carter tapped a few designers for the film in order to achieve this aesthetic.

Carter recently sat down with tv and radio personality Bevy Smith to discuss the film’s fashion, cultural impact and more. Carter shared some fashion tips viewers could try out while watching the movie in order to get into “the spirit of Zamunda”. She expresses that women can wear head wraps, wrap-around fabric for a skirt with a regular t-shirt, or tribal.

She describes the film, “It encourages you to embrace your African-isms and African roots…I think it brings so much joy to the whole family.“

Taina Williams Shows Off Her Growing Bump in Fashion Nova Plaid Shacket

It is no secret that Taina Williams has been slaying her pregnancy with her ultra-chic looks! Shackets, or shirt jackets, have been trending all season and Taina decided to join in on the fashion fun in a recent look:

Taina Williams wore Fashion Nova’s $59.99 Patent Me Plaid Shacket which appeared a cream, nude and blue color combination. She paired the look with a cream long-sleeve high-neck bodysuit, knee-high boots, and white and gold quilted Chanel bag.

The shacket offers an oversized fit, complete with two chest pockets and a button-up detailing. Depending on the height of the wearer, the shacket typically falls at or slightly below the knee.

As we approach Spring, this jacket is perfect for cool mornings as customers have reviewed that it is rather warm.

Are Casino Dress Codes Necessary?

Casinos can be pure magic. These places are designed with glamour and exclusivity in mind. From the decor to the music to the sophisticated lighting…everything in a casino tells you that you are in for a luxurious experience. Designers spend a lot to match every small detail. Everything is in line in a real casino, from the carpet to the drapes to how the staff handles.

Naturally, if you want to visit one, you also need to be in line and role with the environment. Dressing codes are common in many gaming institutions, and you can stick out if you don’t follow these. Some establishments will even reject you at the entrance if you don’t want to comply with their rules. But let’s talk about fashion and casinos and is it really so important? Why are these restrictions there in the first place? In this article, we will go through some of these questions. 

Why Are There Dress Codes in Casinos?

Clothes tell a lot about us, and it is proven that this is one of the effective ways of non-verbal communication. Judging people via their clothes is not according to etiquette, but it happens all the time. Let’s imagine a scenario where you meet a person in cargo shorts versus a guy in a suit. Maybe the reason for the encounter is the same, but the vibe from each person is different. Presentation is key, and casinos know this. With the goal of being a high profile institution and being able to attract high paying players, casinos enforce these rules. They want high rollers; they want people with status and money in their casinos. People that make a lot of money will care for themselves, and they will look the part. Nobody that makes six figures won’t go out in a tracksuit to gamble. Well, maybe some will do, but they are rare and probably too rich to care.

Some casinos have very interesting dress codes as some will prohibit camouflage clothing of any kind, sleeveless clothing will be judged from case to case, but for example, the Treasury casino will allow rubber thongs before 6 PM, but not after 6 PM.

So dress to impress to get into the high and mighty club of casinos.

What Is Acceptable Casino Fashion

So with that, let’s review how your should dress. The keyword here is formal. Imagine that you want to meet a potential romantic interest, you want to look your best. Well, that’s how you should dress up for the casino night or the casino themed party. Keep in mind that going full out is not necessary, in most cases, but a nice jacket and an ironed shirt is a must. Even jeans can go with this look, but please avoid sportswear in this combination; nice shoes are a must. A tie or a bowtie is also a nice addition to any outfit. For women, well, a dress is the way to go. Not something too provocative, but who knows, maybe that outfit can confuse a dealer to your advantage. An evening gown is perfect, and some complimentary jewelry will make the look real flashy and worth the game of gambling. 

So dress formally casually, and not sports, is the winning combination. 

It’s not every day you visit an establishment like this, so be aware of that and make the night special. You will be a part of the whole casino experience, even for other people. 

If all this sounds too much, well, you can stick to an online casino. Maybe this can be your deal because, with the advancements in technology, you can enjoy various games from the comfort of your home. Even live dealer games, where the dealer can be quite the eye candy, be it that you are a gambling guy or a girl. 

But nothing can really beat the sight of live dealers, a nice cold drink in your hand, and the sight of winning. 

The atmosphere is everything, and clothes can be an exciting way to spice things up.

So with this, we have concluded that dressing up for the casino occasion is a must. You can choose other smaller casinos that maybe won’t require this level of preparation, but this won’t bring the full experience of real gambling. It all comes up on your preference. 

Before going into any gambling establishment, do your research well and figure out how you need to act and dress. Can you go casual, or you need to be super formal. It also depends from casino to casino; maybe you will encounter a place that will let you gamble in your bathrobe, which is also an experience for itself. Oh, and be aware that some places will let you in some areas, but if you are not dressed up, you won’t be able to access all parts of the place. The VIP room won’t be for you in a bathrobe, that is for sure. 

The image of gambling is carefully made and has a history, so do your part, and we wish you happy gambling.
