Keil, New Orleans, Louisiana

“Hey. I wanted to say I love your site and I visit it everyday!
thanks for giving me the heads up on fashion.” Nia

“I love your blog! I’m typically a personal finance blog snob, but my
weakness is fashion. I’m a New Yorker, but I’ve lived in Atlanta the
last 12 years. Your pics and “subway shots” make be think of
home…”–Najah

“Hi there! i love, love, LOVE ur blog soooo much. i always check it to
make sure that i’m on point with fashion and always try to catch up
with the sample sales! i actually finally caught one earlier this year
and got some great finds!” Kia

“First of all I must tell you that I absolutly love your blog. I think
it’s phenomenol especially as a black female to be able to have style

“I LOVE the site. You really have a fresh eye and have

New Look + Best of Real Style

Hey Guys,
So…notice anything different???
Do you like??
An anniversary is a special event, and you know I had to celebrate in style! The Fashion Bomb is all grown up, so I figured I’d ditch the pink, go for a fresh white, and a whole new layout. What do you think??
And this is only the beginning of the anniversary surprises. Stay tuned for a hot, hot contest featuring products from several Fashion Bomb featured designers, and my next event: An Anniversary/Fashion week party slated for September 8th. Get ready, it’s gonna be hot!
So the past year has been a lot of fun, and there’s a ton of stuff I enjoy doing for the Fashion Bomb. Every day this week, I’m going to highlight one, and today, I must shine a spotlight on:
Real Style

I love hitting the streets or patrolling the crowd for fabulous fashionable people, and New York City never disappoints! Taking pix of stylish strangers wasn’t always easy. In one of my very first ‘Mail Bomb’ posts dated December 13th, 2006, I have the following:
**********************
Diamond and Nini ask:
“Do you just stop people and say ‘excuse me, do you mind if i take a pic of you and put it on my blog?”
and
“Yeah, how do you approach them? Because so many times i wanna take pix of people rockin kewl clothes, but I dont wanna offend them even though its for something positive…”

100_4376

To be honest, asking random people on the street is totally nerve wracking. I never know how people will react, if they’ll be really stank, or what! But, because I know it adds to the blog, I suck it up and do it (all for you guys!). Most times I just ask my coworkers, but now, I have a 15 second spiel that goes,”HimynameisClaireandI’mafashionjournalist,Ihaveablogcalledthe FashionBombwhereItalkabouttrendsandfashionandIthinkyou lookgreatwouldyoumindifItakeapictureofyou??” Usually they say “What?” and I slow down and repeat myself:) I have cute pink cards with the name of the blog on it for added legitimacy…and thankfully every one I’ve asked has been sweet enough to say yes! I mean, I figure if someone came up to me telling me I looked fabulous, I’d be happy to take a picture as well:)
********************************
Thankfully, taking pictures is a lot less awkward these days. I noticed that everyone wants to feel flattered, stylish, and beautiful…as if their efforts in the morning are actually appreciated by someone else. So Real Style is a bit of a cinch…and I want to say “Thank you” to everyone who’s posed and put their heads on the chopping block. You’re the bomb!
So that does it for today; hope you like the new look.
And you *must* tune in for the contest. It’s gonna be so dope.

Friday Mail Bombs: Rihanna’s Diane von Furstenberg Blog, Alicia’s Elephant Bell Jumper + Anniversary Stuff

Happy Friday!
So as you may or may not know, the Fashion Bomb’s one year anniversary is coming up tres soon! Yes, it’s been a year of me pontificating, observing, and blabbing about urban fashion. And what a good year it’s been!!! In celebration I’m doing a ton on the old blog…but before I get into all that, I’ll give you what you came for:

the-fashion-bomb-mail-bombs-16-24-191

That’s right, Mail Bombs.
Let’s get it crackilackin.
First up reader Melody says, “This shirt and hat that Ri-Ri is wearing is super cute!!! “

“…Can you find her hat & shirt or offer some buget-friendly versions?”
Hey Melody. I think Rihanna’s wearing this $198 Cullen Bib Ruffle Blouse by Diane von Furstenberg…

…but if $198 is too much to spend on a white blouse, you can get something similar in this $49 Pixie Hopkins Tuxedo Shirt

…from Victoria’s Secret.
If the shirt stretches you wallet, you can save a bit with this 21 Newsboy Cap

…only $10 at www.forever21.com.
Next up reader Truestarisha says, “I was watching BET’s the 5ive on Wednesday when they highlighted a fashion line by the name of Alcapony or something as their number one spot. I was wondering if you could find out the correct name of the line and highlight it. I think their clothes are amazing and I would love to know where I could find them.”
Intern Elita to the rescue!
She says, “The line is called AquaPoni. It’s been worn by some celebs (Scar, Michael Knight from Project Runway, Common) and is made up of mostly hoodies and items that have been repurposed. Very boho chic.”
A few of their looks, care of their myspace page:

Create Your Own
Cute, cute stuff! And apparently they’re based out of Atlanta?? How come I haven’t heard of them? Anyway, you can purchase the items at Atlanta boutiques like P Valentine (www.pvalentine.com) or Pieces of Adrene (www.piecesofadrene.com). Neither of those stores have online commerce, so your best bet would be to try to contact them through myspace.
Fashion Bomb Fan Christina from Baltimore, Maryland says, “I have been searching high and low for the designer of the dress that Jennifer Hudson wore to the Golden Globe awards….”

“… I even hit her up on myspace and the diva that she is, would not tell me. I notice that a lot of dresses that she wears have the ruffle effect or that extra fabric around the midsection and as a curvy woman myself that’s what I like. I’m getting married and a lot of my girlfriends are extra curvy and that look would be great. If you could be of any help and letting me know who the designer was for that dress is, I would be so grateful. You just don’t understand how much that would mean to me. Thank you in advance for your attention to my request!”
Intern Elita hit me up again (yay!) and found that according to this article, the dress is Vera Wang.
Elita went on a search for a similar VW dress, and came upon this $380 black satin pleated flutter v-neck dress

…at www.bluefly.com. Close, but I personally think that this $220 T-Bags Flutter Sleeve Dress has a more Golden Globes effect…

…it’s navy, has the sleeves, and an empire waist so that the fabric skims over the belly. If you’re set on having Vera Wang dresses at your wedding, however, visit her website www.verawang.com and find a store or retailer near you.
Hope that helps!
So a *ton* of readers fell in love with Alicia Keys denim jumpsuit…

I searched and searched, but couldn’t find an exact match.
This $84 Wood Sprite bootcut jumpsuit by Dereon has a similar zipper, but is clearly a capri…

And this $280 Jumpsuit in Carbon by Deener is full length…

…but the buttons are a bit different.
I couldn’t find an exact match. Can y’all help? Let me know!
Update!!! Reader Tina from ATL, GA found out who makes the jumper!
The $140 Elephant Bell Jumper

…is available online at a e-store call Good, Bad, and Ugly NYC. The jumper comes in 6 colors…including the one Ms. Keys wore on TRL!
Thanks Tina!
Lastly Lady P says, “Hi Claire! You recently discussed Spectator Booties. I have a pair of Manolo Blahnik booties like these…”

“…and I would like some suggestions on how to wear these with jeans and skirts. Do you think I’ll be able to wear these booties with a pencil skirt?”
Great Shoes! I definitely think you can rock them with jeans. I think spectators would go really well with the new wide leg trend. For cues on how to wear them with skirts, I looked to Burberry Prorsum’s Fall 2007 show:

Create Your Own
…every model is sporting spectators with black, opaque tights under mini’s, trenches, even bubble skirts. I think a pencil could work too, just be mindful of the hem. Since the shoe comes higher than a regular pump, it cuts your leg off a bit at the ankle. So make sure you hem line goes higher to reveal more leg.
Wheeww! That does it!
So as I mentioned…stay tuned next week for the Fashion Bomb’s Anniversary! There will be a giveaway contest (test your knowledge of The Fashion Bomb), a fun Fashion Week party announcement, and hot, fresh new look.
You’re gonna love it!
Until then…

Style File: Star Jones

“This is the day I lay in a pre-op room of a hospital, staring at the brightly lit ceiling, being prepped for gastric bypass surgery. I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. I was so angry: How had I allowed myself to get to 307 pounds? I could clearly remember the days when I’d considered myself fly and curvaceous. Funny—or sad—how we “thick” girls can justify being excessively overweight.”–Excerpt from Star Jones Reynolds’ Essay in Glamour Magazine

Hey Guys,
So for this week’s Style File, I chose a pretty unusual suspect…

Star Jones

…Star Jones!
Whether you blame the gastric bypass or her new show on Court TV, Star has been representing lately in smart, tailored outfits that could work for any career girl with flair. Let’s take a look:
For press junkets and more casual affairs Star keeps it cute and corporate in embellished cardigans…

…svelte v-neck sweaters andA-line skirts…

…and chic belted shirt dresses…

Sharp!
When she really has to dress it up, she rocks handkerchief dresses with exotic prints (I’ll pass on the shoes)…

…floral numbers…

or long, flattering black cocktails frocks with..

..or without…

Her signature burgundy specs.
C’mon! Cute!

Of course can’t forget the hot frames!
These $269 Bulgari frames from Lenscrafters have a ‘Star’ effect…

…but if they’re too pricey, this $109 pair of Tamara Frames by BCBG could work…

Still too much? Slide on these Calabria Readers

PS Still not convinced?
Remember the old days….

She’s come a long way baby! Don’t you think?

News, sales, what nots:
*There’s an article today in the New York Times on Star. An excerpt, “Ms. Jones led the premiere of her own show on Court TV and was almost unrecognizable after gastric bypass surgery left her about 150 pounds lighter. Her streamlined new look includes a pageboy haircut, plain sleeveless dresses and modish eyeglass frames.” Read more here.

*WWD reports that Venus Williams will have her own line, called EleVen, in Steve & Barry stores starting in November. Why EleVen? “It was part of my address growing up in Compton. It also represents the top, because people always say, one out of 10, but it’s an 11. You can be more than your best in EleVen.” Suuuuure. Can’t wait till November? To celebrate the launch of the collection, 100 pairs of her Court sneakers will be available at the Steve & Barry Manhattan Mall store on Friday. First come first serve!

*And, just for fun, see how Venus would spend $1.4 million dollars.

Say it Loud: Politically Chic

Hey hey!
So there’s a lot going on right now in politics with the war, issues with the current administration, and the upcoming presidential election…and none of this is lost on political fashionistas who want to voice their views through their clothing. I’ve found two websites that offer a plethora of politically cute t’s for diva’s with an opinion.
Urban Outfitters (www.urbn.com) has dozens of shirts that sport political messages such as, “War What is it Good For” “Vote for Change” and “I love Peace.”
Take a look:

Bottom Row: Don’t Let Friends Vote Republican Tee; $24;War is Over Tee, $28;Friends Don’t Let Friends Vote Democrat Tee, $24. All at www.urbn.com.

Another site, Sir Alistair Rai (www.siralistairrai.com/), has great t’s that are a bit more stylish (and expensive!), yet still purvey a message that takes a stand:

Save Darfur Beater, $38

Vintage Rock & Roll Peace Tee, $48

Camo Long Sleeve Thermal, $62
Sir Alistair Rai even sells the Obama for Change T that Halle B. was spotted wearing here…

and Kim K here…

Get it for $46.

Harlem Renaissance Fashion Show

Bonne journee!
It’s so rainy and cold in NYC…I sincerely hope that Fall isn’t here already!?! I still have summer dresses to wear…!
Anyway, as you know, I attended a Harlem Row Fashion Show last week Thursday. The show’s purpose was to underline the unique, varied, and exquisite fashion offerings available in Harlem. Just as in the past, uptown is getting a makeover, and fashion is following suit.
Anyway the scene was packed in the River Room at 145th and Riverside…

…full of fashionistas and fashionistos sipping, eating, and networking.
The DJ was spinning hot beats…

And eventually everyone (but me!) took a seat for the show…

First up was B. Oyama Homme…

…a store that specializes in Harlem haberdasherry.
A few looks:

I really enjoyed B. Oyama’s modern adaptations of traditional English suits and top hats. Would your man rock that?
Next up was one of my fave Boutiques Pieces…

…where Fashion Bomb Reader Kamilah made her runway debut.
A few looks:

Create Your Own
Pieces always has one of a kind, show stopping garments, and that day was no exception.
A bonus (I guess) was that 106 & Park Honey Rocsi…

…sashayed down the runway wearing a brown satin v-neck tunic, patterned tights, and sandals. Cute?
The third to show was Denim Library…

…a line that had a clear rocker/nerd chic aesthetic.

Create Your Own
Their outkast clothing comprised dookie chains, colored skinny jeans, cardigans, and prepster sweaters. Denim Library is what the cool alternative kids will be rocking to school this season. You typically don’t equate ‘Harlem’ with ‘rocker’, so Denim Library was a refreshing surprise. Can’t wait to see what’s next for them!
Last but not least was Montgomery…

…where Bre from ANTM opened…

…looking quite dramatic.
A few looks:

Create Your Own
While the show seemed to open with a mixture of looks –everything from gilded disco frocks to 80’s prom dresses and African inspired beadworked garments–I was really struck at the end of Montgomery’s use of pickaninny applique’s, pins, and dolls as well as ‘Mamie’ fans…

Her use of slave imagery was shocking, and immediately reminded me of famed 7th Avenue designer Patrick Kelly…

…who similarly used pickaninny pins all over his clothes, saying, ‘My grandmother was a maid, honey.’ My memorabilia means a lot to me.” Kelly died of AIDS in 1990, cutting his career short. I’ve got to interview Ms. Montgomery to see if he was her inspiration.
Anyway the show certainly opened my eyes to all the cool boutiques up in Harlem. I’ll definitely be trekking uptown to sample a bit of Harlem fashion flavor.

Real Style: Harlem Fashion Show

Hey hey!
Happy Monday!!
So as you know, I went to a fantabulous fashion show last week…and a few of Harlem’s finest were in the building. I got there a little late, but still had a bit of time to patrol the crowd for a few fashion bomb worthy peeps:

100_6584

These three looked retro yet chic in exotic prints, bold accessories, and rose colored sunglasses…

These twins were super duper dapper, sporting tailored jackets, spiffy shoes, and one hot Fendi briefcase…

And lastly this Fashion Bomb reader looked amazing in her Sass & Bide dress. I loved the dress’ chic stripes and pockets! And she accessorized simply and subtly with a long necklace.
Smashing!
Shortly after snapping her pic, the show started…so didn’t have time to take any more crowd pictures. But the show was well worth my trek up there. Stay tuned for a blow by blow this week.
Until then…

Friday Mail Bombs: Kim Kardashian’s Sexy Dresses and Beyonce’s Freakum Dress

Hey Y’all!
It’s Friday….

the-fashion-bomb-mail-bombs2

..you know what time it is!
Let get to it!
First up, GlamourouzGal says, “I really love the way Kim Kardashian dresses…”

“…I’m looking for dresses to fit my curves like hers in the right places!!! But of course at affordable prices…Can you help?”
Hey Mizz Glamourouz! There are tons of high and low priced options you can use to get Kim K’s scandalous yet sexy look. Try the following:

Top Row: Herve Leger Halter Neck Gunmetal Dress, $955, www.intermix.com; Daria Dress, $89, www.guess.com.
Bottom Row: Sweetheart Tube Pencil Dress, $148, www.ardenb.com; Curvy jersey rhinestone dress, $119, www.victoriassecret.com.
Freakum Dresses must be really popular, because reader Shayvonne asked, “Where can I get Beyonce’s hot black dress…”

“…for a reasonable price?”
Hey Shayvonne. I found that this Leather Trim Dress with Brooch

…from www.ardenb.com fit the bill, and it’s only $58!!
Next up reader Chantilly says, “I really love the look of thigh-high boots, except I cannot find any. Do you know where I can purchase them and how can I wear them??? Thanks!!”
Hey Girl. Blame it on the summer temps, but I looked and only found this pair of thigh high patent leather boots by Pleaser USA

…at zappos.com
They look a tad stripperish, but for $70, you can’t go wrong!
Regarding how to wear them, you can pop ’em over a pair of jeans a la Jessica Simpson…

or black pants like J. Lo…

…or you can try wearing them with a short skirt if you’re feeling racy.
Next up, TFB readers Valerie and Kindra both needed to have the high waisted pants…

…Beyonce wore while filming her American Express ad.
At this time of the season, most stores are offering high waisted trousers in demure black. I searched high and low, and stumbled upon this $215 pair of tantalizing trousers by Nanette Lepore ….

…not an exact match, but you’ll have the same look. Just slap on a belt and a white tank and you’ll be ready to go!
Lastly, reader Penne says, “Recently, I ordered these shoes…”

“… with nothing to wear with them. PLEASE suggest something …”
Great shoes! They’re absolutely perfect for a night out! You definitely want them to shine on their own, so I’d suggest wearing a gold or white dress like the following:

A.B.S. gold pleated knit bubble trapeze dress, $189, www.bluefly.com.

Organic Double Layer Dress, $88, www.calypso.com.

Chain Halter Dress, $74, www.ardenb.com.
If you’re feeling really adventurous, try for a dress that picks up on the turquoise in the shoe, like this Diane von Furstenberg Satin Dress…

…on sale for $270 at shopbop.com
Smootches!
PS The Harlem Fashion Show was fierce and so much fun! Shout out to fabulous readers April and Kamilah! You’re the bomb! Everyone stay tuned for a blow by blow next week.
PSS A few readers have written in asking where Penne got her hot shoes. She divulged that she purchased them at www.intermixonline.com. Unfortunately, they’re sold out.

Fall Trend Talk: Spectator Shoes?

Happy Thursday!
The weekend’s almost here…can’t you taste it!?!
Anyway spectator pumps and booties (menswear inspired oxford shoes with a heel), have come from the 1920’s and landed smack on the runways of the Fall 2007 Ready to Wear Shows:

9-1

Reyes

Betsey Johnson

Zac Posen
Tons of stores are offering high and low priced options for the fall:

Top Row: Bally ‘Glania’ Pump, $595, www.nordstrom.com; Lumiana Epic, $150, zappos.com
Patent-leather-and-suede pump, Charles David, $345, www.charlesdavid.com for stores.
Middle Row: Eva High Heel Lace Up Platform Booties, $635, www.gucci.com; Spectator Platform Oxford, $59, www.spiegel.com; Ruffled pump, Miu Miu, $525, 888-977-1900.
Bottom Row: Lace-up perforated pump, Bebe, $159, www.bebe.com for stores; Spectator bootie, $79, www.victoriassecret.com; Flannel-and-patent-leather bootie, Stuart Weitzman, $299, www.neimanmarcus.com.

They seem sorta cute, but I’m not too sure how I feel about them. Looking at the pickings (and prices!), I’m wondering if they’ll look as good on as they do on the runway…or be worth the bling.
Thoughts?
Smootches!

Cool Online Find: Portero

Hey guys!
So I’ll admit it…I’m a sucker for a sweet bag whether it be Gucci, Louis Vuitton or Prada! But while I love the designer satchels, I’m also a baller on a budget…and sometimes I find that E-Bay is my best and most affordable option.
Unfortunately, I’ve been burned by E-bay before. Years ago, I logged on, looking to find an authentic Louis Vuitton Speedy Bag…

…to add to my wardrobe. I thought I was lucky when I scored what was described as an ‘authentic’ Louis off E-bay for a steal. The pictures seemed fine online, but when I received the bag…

…and took a quick look at the details….

…it was obvious that the bag was totally fake! I was incensed, and tried to go back to the seller. When I logged back on, I found that the person had deleted their profile! Can we say pissed!?!
Well, I was relieved when Robin Givhan reported a few weeks ago about a site called www.portero.com.

It calls itself, “the only online auction marketplace truly devoted to the luxury brand legacy.” It strictly auctions off authentic bags, jewelry, and shoes, and has a 30 day return policy. Their prices might be higher, but at least you can be sure of what you’re buying.
I looked and found several decent bags starting off at reasonable offering prices (considering these bags can cost thousands of dollars retail):
This Marc Jacobs Collection Venetia Light Pink Satchel Bag retails for $700…

…but you can bid on it starting at $151.
This Louis Vuitton Bedford Fuchsia Vernis Monogram Purse Handbag retails for $1180…

…but you can place your bids starting at $255.
And this $455 Gucci GG Monogram Club Ready Pochette Handbag….

…starts bidding at a very affordable $100.
Portero.com also has gently used shoes, wallets, and jewelry! Prices are a bit steep, but you can rest assured that you won’t waste your money on fake items!
Beats eBay!
Smootches!
PS Read Robin Givhan’s full article on Portero here
PSS Not all my e-bay purchases have been duds. Now when buying on ebay, I follow these 2 rules:
1. For designer bags, always go for vintage. You can’t find the newfangled bags at a discount unless you hit up Saks or a sample sale.
2. Don’t buy from China! I hate to say it, but I’ve been to China, and I know they’ve got some great fakes…so if you’re buying from someone over there, chances are increased that they’re trying to pass off a fake as real!
My two cents…
PSS Don’t forget the Barney’s Sale my NY and LA ladies…

I’ll be there!
