Mail Bombs

Hey!
I’m off this lovely Friday before Memorial Day Weekend, so I’m making this quick!
Let’s get started.
First up, reader Sheria fell in love with Christina Milian’s one shoulder number…
…she says, “Can you please help me find her look!?!
I thought the following frocks gave off a Christina M essence:
1. Aqua Women’s One Shoulder Dress, $78, www.bloomingdales.com. 2. Ella Moss Black Label Samantha Dress, $268, www.shopbop.com. 3. Laundry by Design One Shoulder Short Dress, $164, www.bloomingdales.com.
In another Christina Milian Mail Bomb, Natasha says, “I have a family get together coming up in New York and I really want to wear this dress to dinner…
.. .I searched and found out that its made by H&M but they don’t have it anymore. Can you please help I’m in desperate need!!
Sure. The closest thing I could find was this BCBG Strapless Jacquard Dress
…it could work with some tailoring! Get it for $320 at www.saks.com.
Nyasha from Georgia writes, “I am desperately trying to find an affordable short sleeved leather jacket and everywhere I look the price is pretty astronomical. I’ve seen Rihanna rocking a black one lately but cannot afford it….”
Please Please Please help me, I’m heading back up to the northeast soon and its still a little chilly here and there. I would like to be fashionably comfortable. Please help I’m desperate for one of these jackets!!!
A fashion emergency indeed, huh? Well you’re right, most cropped leather jackets are a bit pricy. Lucky you, I found some options under $300:
1. Pepe Short Sleeved Leather Jacket, $300, www.asos.com. 2. Leather Moto Jacket, $98, www.ardenb.com. 3. Cropped Leather Jacket, $129, www.newportnews.com.
Finally, some Fashion Bomb Real Style subjects were getting lots of inquiries from readers!
Tia says, “I think her pants are so cute in this pic!!
…Can you please help me find some???
The closest thing I could find were these $395 Wide Jodphur pants
…from www.emporioarmani.com. Apparently there’s a cheaper version at H&M. Log onto www.hm.com for store locations.
Several people wrote in admiring this young lady’s ruffle top:
Turns out she’s wearing none other than this $260 Thread Social Ruffle Knit Double Top
…from www.intermixonline.com.
And lastly a reader wrote in a comment to my JC Report Relaunch Party Post. She says, “I couldn’t help but notice the young lady to your right…
… Her dress is to DIE for (well for me anyway)! Where can I get this?
Miss Meghan is so fashionable! She’s wearing this Cynthia Rowley V-Neck Silk Taffeta Dress
…get it at www.cynthiarowley.com.
That does it!
Have fun, long, luxurious weekends!

How to Break into Fashion: Photographer Piper Carter

Hey!
So today I decided to give you yet another ‘Breaking into Fashion‘ post featuring photographer…

piper

Piper Carter!
You might know her from her appearance on VH1’s ‘The Shot“, but Piper has been in the industry for years, shooting editorials for British Elle, the New York Times, Trace, Spin and King Magazine.
She kindly took some time out of her hectic schedule to talk to the Fashion Bomb about how she got her start, and how you aspiring photographers can get your shot in the field.
Originally a dance major at Howard University, Piper always had a penchant for creativity. “I’ve been a dancer since I was five, but I felt it wasn’t something I really wanted to do. I had interests in photography and fashion design, and on a whim switched my major to photography.” Once she started taking classes, she realized that not only did she like snapping images, but she had a talent for it.
After graduation the Michigan native moved to New York and took up an assistantship with celebrated photographer Steven Klein. Impressed with her pluck, he hired her on as his 5th assistant. She says, “I had to do a lot of grunt work, including picking up dog poo and getting his mail. But I was also able to become a part of his team. After 3 years of being with him, I became his second assistant and was virtually his lighting designer and production manager.
Though she learned a ton from her assistantship, she decided that she still needed to learn more, and went on to pursue another degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “After September 11th, the whole industry changed. I wanted to immerse myself in digital images.” She followed FIT with an internship at Vogue, which led her to the VH1 show. Now you can find her backstage at Fashion Week, or shooting spreads for Essence and Six Degrees Magazine.
About breaking into the industry she says, “There are no hard and fast rules. Your career is what you make of it. Fashion is an industry that’s sort’ve like the wild wild west. You can get an agent or you could be on your own. You’ve just gotta be really diligent and persistent with contacting entities with which you want to work.”
Not sure where to start? Piper touts the virtues of a French/English publication called ‘Le Book.’ She says, “It’s for clients to source out talent that they want to use. In there you can find contact information for photographers, production companies, photo studios, art directors, magazines, and art buyers. Contact them and offer to intern for them. You may not have an agent, so learn how to package yourself. It’s not about contacting people and saying how great you are, but getting in touch and saying , ‘this is what I’ve done and this is what I can offer you” Just starting out? Play up your experience as best you can. “You’ve got to get yourself out there. Meet as many people as possible. Be your own mouthpiece.
Do you need a degree in photography to get through the door? “I learned more as an assistant than I did at school, ” she confesses, “I went to school because I wanted to learn certain base skills. But you don’t necessarily need to go to school to be a photographer.” If you go the ‘non-school’ route, she recommends keeping your skills sharp by shooting something everyday. “Shoot a flower, a tree, a child, anything, just shoot and keep yourself fresh. Look at the images after you’ve shot and show those pictures to people. Not because you need their opinion, but see how your images affect what other people think. ” Also, take advantage of local and smaller publications. “The fact that you’e working and working with the client, that alone can help you learn how to communicate with people and how to give people what they want.
As a woman of color, she says, “I could go on and on and on about the horrors I’ve experienced.” But, “You have to have confidence. Do your thing and know that your work speaks beyond what color you are. Talent and a good personality go a long way.”
Sound advice!
Piper’s currently working on a compilation of aspirational images of women of color, set to launch in September. Keep track of her on her website, www.pipercarter.com, or on her Blog, Studio Arena.

*The Uptown Emerging Designers’ Market last Sunday (organized by friends Michelle and Enyinne) has a write up in today’s New York Times!!!
Eric Wilson says, “Ms. Gittens, in a belted vintage gray dress, and Ms. Owunwanne, wearing jeans she had altered with an orange tie at the back, organized the market to draw attention to what is happening in Harlem, as well as to spotlight designers from Brooklyn and New Jersey.” As V. Morning Quickie: JC Report Relaunch Party

Hey!
So last night I was delighted to attend the relaunch party of the website, JCReport:

jcreport

Haven’t heard of it? It’s a fabulous online fashion destination, chocked to the brim with all the latest on trends and news, all from an international perspective.
I made my way down to the W in the Financial District, and the room was packed with well dressed world citizens:
I usually reserve Mondays for Real Style, but the fashion flavor in the room was so strong, I couldn’t help but put it on display:

I literally almost started salivating over these young ladies’ eye catching chunky necklaces worn with simple yet fabulous black dresses and stilettos! They admitted that their jewelry was by Diana Broussard, Dresses by Peter Hidalgo, and shoes by Pierre Hardy. And check out diva on the left’s Chanel Ankle Bag. FIERCE!!
Men’s fashion abounded:
These young men looked dapper and different in shorts on the right, and a straight legged suit worn with a skinny tie on the left.
An exotic patterned fedora plays well against a dark polka dot jacket, tie, and shirt. Young man on the left (designer Jose Duran (www.joseduran.net) looks simply chic in a cream tank and black pants.
More polka dots! Divo on the left is a member of the band the Ones (www.myspace.com/theonesareflawless) and represents with a unique haircut and glasses. The leather jacket donning fashionisto on the right is none other than designer Orlando Carreras (www.orlandocarreras.com).
And I loved this young lady’s bowl cut and simple, yet edgy hoops. And her ruffled top!
So cute!
Of course I had to jump in a couple!
There I am with blogging superstars and friends Kathryn Finney of the Budget Fashionista (www.budgetfashionista.com) and shoe maven Miss Meghan (www.missmeghan.com).
And I had to take a picture with the man of the hour…
Jason Campbell!
Check out his website today (www.jcreport.com) and bookmark it! Tell him I sent ya!

Your Summer Work Wardrobe Guide, Part 1

So reader Marci from Edinburgh, Scotland UK wrote in with the following:

My work place has a casual smart dress code. I am not keen to wear jeans (except on the odd Friday when I know I’ll be meeting my mates for a drink after work). I prefer to wear pretty shirts with formal, tailored trousers. I’ve probably worn a skirt twice since December. Shorts are a personal no no. Please do a feature on casual-smart work wear for the summer?

Sure!
Intern Adriana stepped in to spearhead Part 1 of The Fashion Bomb’s Guide to a Stylish Summer Work Wardrobe. Read on for suggestions for cool, breezy dresses, sophisticated jackets, and even office ready accessories! Stay tuned next week for tips on coordinating separates, bag options, and skirts!
********************************************************************
Hey Fashion Bombers!!
It’s finally warm, so you want to throw off those layers you’ve been wrapping yourself in and after surviving winter. Here, a few suggestions for how to dress fabulously for work while maintaining comfort, sophistication, and style:
1.
Dresses (sorry, Guy Trebay):

traceedress

There’s not an article of clothing that is equal parts comfortable for summer, flattering to so many shapes and sizes, and comes in such diverse fabrics! Knee-length dresses with capped sleeves work very well—they’re comfortable and sexy, yet cover enough to still be appropriate for work. Wrap dresses are always a great choice, and shirtwaist styles are also a cool way to maintain a preppy chic look:
1. Maggy London Cap Sleeve Chiffon Dress, $138, www.nordstrom.com. 2. Bebe Silk Sash Waist Dress, $129, www.bebe.com. 3. Diane von Furstnberg Tie-Dye Wrap Dress, $398, shopbop.com 4. Phoebe Couture Ruffled Shirtdress, $260, www.bloomingdales.com. 5. Tadashi Silk Dance Dress, $330, www.bloomingdales.com.
2. Light Jackets:
A blazer can work wonders for an outfit. Donning one instantly pulls your look together and, given cut and fabric, can add anything from professionalism to edge. Bonus: it’ll save you from the chills of the office air conditioner! J. Crew has a fantastic selection of light jackets for the summer, as do Trina Turk, Michael Kors, and Loeffler Randall:
1. Trina Turk Burke Jacket, $228, www.searlenyc.com. 2. Brushstroke Print Chessy Jacket, $148, www.jcrew.com. 3. Michael Kors Ponte Jacket, $84, www.lordandtaylor.com. 4. Loeffler Randal Silk Ruffle Jacket, $565, www.eluxury.com.
A structured light cardigan is also a great summer piece as it has the look of a blazer yet a much lighter weight for a casual feel:

Vince Tie Front Cardigan, $235, shopbop.com
3. Shoes:
Ideally, you want a pair of shoes that will carry you from day through night. Tempting as they are, try to avoid flip-flops in the office. If you crave a flat shoe with the airiness of a sandal and that also shows off your pedi, go for an open-toed skimmer. A lower heeled sandal between 2” and 2.5” is also a great work-fashion compromise: short enough to be appropriate for work yet high enough to give you your heel fix:

1. Stuart Weitzman Specchio Shoes, $188, zappos.com 2. Fendi Satin Ruffle Flat, $450, www.eluxury.com. 3. Christian Michael Ahmed Sandal, $240, zappos.com 4. Loeffler Randal May Open Ruffle Pump, $430, shopbop.com 5. Michael Kors Magic Sandals, $188, zappos.com 6. Coclico Shoes Keyhole Sandal, $320, shopbop.com 7. Irregular Choice Sexy Vixen Shoes, $129, zappos.com 8. Chloe Patent Crisscross Buckle Sandals, $645, wwwintermixonline.com. 9. Naughty Monkey Button Up, $69, zappos.com
4. Accessories:
Summer is the season to show off great necklaces. Use them to complement the lower necklines of summer tops and dresses:
1. Bubble Necklace, $150, www.jcrew.com. 2. Just Cavalli Zebra Heart Necklace, $273, www.eluxury.com. 3. Concentric Glass Bead Necklace, $28, www.urbanoutfitters.com. 4. Kenneth Jay Lane Snake Pendant Necklace, $77, shopbop.com 5. Women’s Multi Stone Necklace, $10, oldnavy.com
****************************************************************
Snaps for a great post including amazing shoe suggestions! I’m self admittedly a bit conservative when it comes to shoes, but I almost lost my breathe over the Chloe and Coclico sandals.
Great job, Adriana!
Stay tuned next week for Part 2 of the Fashionable Work Wardrobe Series. And maybe I’ll do a little something for the men?

Morning Quickie: Uptown Emerging Designers Market

This weekend, I also stopped into the Uptown Emerging Designers Market hosted by my friends Michelle and Enyinne…
As soon as I stepped into the Hip Hop Cultural Center, I was delighted to see tons of indie designers, including Burden Clothing, Cut it out Apparel, Harriet’s Alter Ego, and of course Seasoned to Perfection.
While there were many many options, I only stopped and chit chatted with a few. One who caught my eye was D. Brown
…she makes jazzy custom made t-shirts, emblazoned with her initials…
…along with custom made men’s jeans and accessories (I liked her sequined berets!). Check her out at www.myspace.com/dbrownfashion.
Another designer to look out for: Nkrumah Jennings, designer of the jewelry line Anu
…I knew I was just there to look around, but I couldn’t help but shop at his table! I picked up a pair of cute gold earrings and a bold necklace (he actually shortened the necklace for me as I stood there). He’s on myspace as well at www.myspace.com/anurockmetal.
All in all it was a great event!
I saw a few Fashion Bombers in the house…thanks for rolling out! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the next Uptown Emerging Designers Market in July!

Real Style: Pieces Boutique

Hey!
So this weekend, my fashion plate was literally brimming over with yummy events! It seems like everyone I knew was having something to celebrate summer, style, and design.
My first stop was at my favorite store, Pieces, for the launch of their children’s and mens’ store…

img_0804

I arrived at Pieces at 6pm on the dot, and the store quickly filled with Brooklyn’s fashionable set:
…of course I had to snap a few pictures of the lovely people who came out to shop, sip, and strut:
Young lady on the right stopped me in my tracks with her pretty bright coral patterned tunic worn with skinny jeans and flat metallic sandals. Her pop of lipstick brought it all together. Diva on the left looked fly in a form fitting black dress and sky high stilettos.
Shannon from Parlour Magazine (www.parlourmagazine.com) was in the house with a plum clutch worn with skinny jeans, a blue frilly top, and an army green jacket. If you haven’t heard of Parlour, check it out! It’s a webzine focused on global news, culture, and music.
Of course some guys swung by for the celebration of the men’s store! These young men represented the online mag YRB (www.yrbmagazine.com) and came thru sporting a Pieces collection hoodie on the right, and a vest, jacket and jeans accessorized with a hat and glasses on the left.
Look at this fly couple! Homegirl’s Louis Vuitton Damier Speedy and large earrings stood against a backdrop of wide legged dark jeans, a simple tee, and leather jacket. On top of being super chic, she’s also a jewelry designer (e-mail her here) and a Fashion Bomb fan! Y’all are so cute! Her boyfriend stood out in a green jacket, plaid scarf and straight legged jeans.
I loved the guy on the right’s Guccisima murse, which went well with his scarf and hat. His boo looked summer ready in a white top and flats.
The creator of the children’s clothing line Brycewear (www.brycewear.com) came with her son Bryce, and represented for fashionable mothers in high waisted jodhpur capris, gold wedges, and a cropped jean jacket.
And lastly, Gwyneth, designer of Gwyneth Shoes (www.gwynethshoes.com) looked sweetly sophisticated in a red patterned jacket with a ribbon tie, wide legged jeans, and amazing jewelry.
Even on my way out I caught some style from Daoud from the company Coup D’Etat Brooklyn (www.cdtbk.com):

Seems scarves are a must have accessory for men in Brooklyn! Daoud matched his patterned, fringed choice to his brown shoes, hat, and sunglasses for a retro cool summer look.
So what do you think. Doesn’t Brooklyn have great style?

Let’s take a gander at their handy work:
First, Khalilah says, “I’m in the Midwest and our weather is finally turning into Spring! I need help locating a cute waist-length trench like the one Tyra is sporting…
…Help me please!
Adriana offered these options:
1. Juicy Couture Mini Trench, $298, www.bloomingdales.com. 2. Drama Satin Short Trench, $35, www.bloomingdales.com. 3. Vince Funnel Neck Jacket, $295, www.bloomingdales.com.

No problem! Rihanna stacked and mixed and matched different types of Kenneth Jay Lane Geometric Bangles...
…get the silver and black version for $100 a pop at www.madisonlosangeles.com. The white version is available for $57 at www.net-a-porter.com.
Next, Juanita says, “I am feeling the shoes that the Sugababe in the sequined dress (far right) wore to the Sex and the City World Premiere…”
…Who designed them and where can I get an affordable approximation? Thanks so much!
Adriana found that that Sugarbabe is wearing these $1,000 Jimmy Choo Apple Metallic Suede Sandals
…but if you don’t have an extra G lying around, you can get the look with these lower priced options:
1. Martinez Valero Class Sandals, $182, www.zappos.com. 2. Nine West Jewellite Sandal, $88, www.piperlime.com. 3. Stuart Weitzman Submit Sandals, $280, www.zappos.com.
Carol says, “I was surfing the ‘net and came across this picture of Jordin Sparks…
…I absolutely love the belt she’s wearing! I checked on eBay but no luck. I just got a simple jersey “Little Black Dress” by Willi Smith and this belt would be perfect. Can you tell me if you’ve seen anything similar or your recommendations.
Aramide from Chi town solved this one!
Check out these fabulous finds for something similar:
1. Cynthia Rowley Soft Leather Sash Belt, $98, www.nordstrom.com. 2. Patent Curve Cummerbund Belt, $192.50, www.shopbop.com. 3. Stitched Obi Wrap Belt, $26.17, www.asos.com.
Elizabeth from Memphis, Tennessee says, “I was wondering where I could find a dress like the green one Audrina Patridge wore at “Live from the Hills Season Finale”?”
…It is hott! Help me find it or something similar!!
New intern Victoria from Carolina maintains that Audrina’s dress from the finale is by Alvin Valley.
I aim to please, so I found a few close approximations for you Hills fans:
1. Nicole Miller Matte Jersey Bubble Hem Dress, $220, www.nordstrom.com. 2. Christopher Dean Luna Dress, $335, www.singer22.com. 3. Vince Oragami Matte Jersey Dress, $240, www.bloomgindales.com.
Lastly, Fashion Bomb reader Diva says, “Could you tell me who SJP was wearing when the girls of SATC were on Oprah promoting their movie a few weeks ago?
Adriana steps in again! She says, “The dress appears to be from the Oscar de la Renta 2008 Pre-Fall collection. I say “appears” because while the exact dress is not in the collection, the print fabric of it appears in other garments, and the cut, use of the leather high-waist belt, and fabric are all very much de la Renta.”
Sounds good to me!
I found a few close floral approximations:
1. See by Chloe Printed Shift Dress, $520, www.tobi.com. 2. Ginny H Printed Shift, $690, www.neimanmarcus.com. 3. Floral Print Lady Dress, $150, www.bananarepublic.com.

Real Talk: How to Fix Your Stained Leather Bag

Hey,
So last summer, I purchased a cute, functional light leather bag. It was a subdued tan, had fashionable tassles, and went with just about everything!
After a summer of parties and fun, I took a look, and my poor bag was almost embarassing to carry around:

oldleather

On top of being stained by my excessive cocoa butter use, black jackets, and dirt, it also had gum on it! Don’t ask me how it got there.
I really thought my bag was done for, before I spoke to a friend who told me I could get the problem fixed for a steal.
He directed me to a place called Evelyn & San…
A shoe repair shop nestled away at 400 West 83rd street and 1st avenue.
The shop itself was very unassuming…
…but when I took a closer look, I noticed all the Gucci bags, Manolo Blahnik and Louboutin heels…this place was all business!
I asked if my bag could be fixed, and the friendly Italian owner told me that with two weeks (and $75 cash), he could make it good as new. $75 seemed like a lot, but I decided to trust him…besides $75 is nothing compared to the price of buying a new bag.
Three weeks later, voila:
What do you think? The gum is definitely gone, as are most of the darker stains…it’s definitely much better than it used to be! So instead of succumbing to the allure of purchasing a new tote, it seems I can carry my old purse around for yet another season.
If you, too, have a light colored or white bag in your closet that you think is virtually unwearable…hit up your local shoe repair store. You never know. For a small fee, you may be able to rock your bag like new!

Fashion, News, and What Nots

*I was looking online, as is my way, and it seems a lot of designers went shopping in African Markets for Spring 2008:
Left to Right: Oscar de La Renta African Print Dress, $2,450; Diane Von Furstenberg Ariki Dress, $1,200; Kevan Hall Dress, price upon request.
But I wonder how much that fabric costs over there…
*Deal of the Day:
Michael Antonio Lilla Black and Pewter Snake Sandal, $46, www. lulus.com. Enter ‘thefashionbomb’ for an extra 15% off.
