How to Break into Fashion: Celebrity Makeup Artist Jackie Gomez

If you’ve coveted Beyoncé’s, Zoe Saldana’s, or Kelly Rowland’s makeup lately, chances are Jackie Gomez‘s talented brush created that fabu look!

jackie-head-shot

Jackie, whose clients have also included Jennifer Lopez, Ciara, and R&B ingenue Natasha, took a sec from her hectic schedule (she was prepping for none other than Bee when we connected) to share makeup tips and how she rose in the biz.Jackie began at 19 by assisting as many established makeup artists as she could, and credits her “drive and ambition” as motivation to start booking her own jobs. “As a Latina, I know the importance of loving one’s exotic features and use that, along with makeup, to make women feel and look amazing.”Jackie recommends that you “practice makeup all the time–the more you do it the better it becomes.” She also stresses the importance of apprenticing, keeping an eye towards striking out on your own, and being confident enough to develop your own style!
She also brought it with a few makeup pointers! Here are her Top 5 Makeup Tips:
1. Eyes should be flirtatious and gorgeous, so have fun! Lashes look best when they’re darker than eyebrows, and several coats of mascara will give you a false lash effect.2. Keep eyebrows in their place: your eyes need a frame to appear balanced. Tip: use a stencil for a perfect brow.
3. Blush is very important! It sculpts the face and gives it life. Go for a bronzer with a peachy blush for a sexy glow.4. Foundations are meant to even out your skin, and they should be a little more yellow than pink for a flawless tone.
5. To prevent eyeliner from running, go over it with a cotton swab dipped in dark eyeshadow.
Did I mention that she’s also a favorite of the guys? John Legend, Marc Anthony, the Clipse, and Hurricane Chris are fans!
And you know I had to get the 411 on her favorite makeup things:1. Tarte Park Avenue Princess Bronzer, $28 2. Korres “Guava” Lip Butter, $9 3. Makeup Forever High Definition Foundation, $40 4. Christian Dior Diorshow Mascara, $24 5. NARS “Crazed” Blush, $25 6. M.A.C Lashes #35, $12

Check out Gucci’s New Heart ad campaign featuring Rihanna:
VOGUE UK reports that Gucci’s fourth annual campaign will benefit UNICEF, and will include a special white version of its Tattoo Heart Collection. 25 percent of all sales will be donated to organizations that fight for children’s rights globally.
Cute, but white bags scare me! Me + white anything in the winter = disaster!

Real Style: Boulevard Haussmann

Hey!
So I realized a few days ago that my Absentee Ballot arrived at my permanent address–with the wrong name! For a second I thought I wouldn’t get to vote in this historical election, until a friend told me about an emergency ballot— a form by which expats and military personnel can write in their choice candidates and send it in. On Saturday I quickly filled out my emergency ballot, then raced to the only Fedex in Paris with weekend hours on Boulevard Haussmann

boulevard-haussman

…a street in the 8th arrondissement that is home to shopping megastores like Les Galeries Lafayette…
…and Au Printemps…
Of course upon arrival at Fedex, I found it was, in very French fashion, closed without reason! Since I had traveled 45 minutes to get there, I decided to chill and look around for some Real Style. I stumbled upon these two friends:
Who stood out to me because of their colorful accessories. The winter doldrums have set in, but these ladies kept it bright with a plum purse on the left, and a metallic jacket and mauve tights on the right.
What do you think of their style?
Bisous!
*I read the fine print on the emergency ballot, and as long as it’s postmarked November 3rd and received by November 11th, it still counts! I’m hightailing back up to Fedex now to make sure the right candidate makes it into the Oval Office!
Also, I hope everyone votes in tomorrow’s election. Don’t take your opportunity to change the country for granted!

NYScene: Black Girls Rock! Awards

Happy Monday, FB’ers!
Adriana here, still blinded from all the stars at last night’s Black Girls Rock! Awards at Lincoln Center in the NYC. First, I had to make sure the outfit was right, knowing I was about to be around some fierce fashion:

Then it was off to the red carpet!Susan Taylor, Regina King, BGR founder Beverly Bond, Iman, Teyana Taylor, and Ryan Leslie were just some of the boldface names who worked it for the cameras.
The VIP Lounge was next, where I caught up with some of our favorite stylistas:I asked BGR Award-winner Estelle which UK designer should we all be looking out for and immediately got back, “Jean Pierre Braganza!” She was super-nice and down-to-earth!Fashion Bomb friend Michaela Angela Davis sent tons of love to Claire in Paris, while Veronica Webb dished about her new TV show, “Living Style,” on BBC World. “It’s a bit like Elsa Klensch’s ‘Style’ and seen in over 200 countries.” “Style” is one of my all-time faves–sweet!Malinda Williams (here with friend and fellow actress Vanessa Williams) and I got in some girl-talk about designers. “Rebecca Taylor, Nanette Lepore, and the dresses in the Max Azria high-end line are some of my favorites. I also love big rings, accessories, and pantyhose!”Finally, for breaking into fashion fans, I had to ask superstar stylist June Ambrose what advice she has for stylists looking to make a name right now. “Use your imagination and don’t always gravitate towards the obvious. Looks are cyclical–if you work with artists be an outlet for, and an architect of, their reinvention!”
I’m pretty rocked myself after last night but it was completely worth it. Black Girls Rock isn’t all parties and stars, though: they do wonderful work empowering young women. To find out more, visit Black Girls Rock Inc.
Thanks to my girl Abby Brew for the photographer look!
I’m out,

Hot or Hmm Halloween Edition…: Mariah and Nick

So the Cannons hosted a Halloween Eve Costume Party last night and…Wowza!!:

In true Mimi fashion, the couple made TWO matching costume changes, from firemen to a chocolate chip cookie and milk combo. I could say something freaky about the last but I’ll leave that to your creative minds, wink-wink…

That pumpkin is a hilarious hot mess (and at the same time a seriously cool piece of art).
You know what? I can’t even hate on these two. Whatever people say, they look like they have fun doing them and leave the opinions to the rest of us. Loves it!
Happy Halloween, FB’ers!

Mail Bombs: Ciara’s Hot Stiletto’s and Kim Kardashian’s Over the Knee Boots

Happy Halloween!
Are y’all dressing up for the big fete? I think my Halloween celebration will be dull for several reasons: First, I heard from my homies that the Frenchies don’t ‘do’ Halloween. Second, my five (yes FIVE) suitcases were so packed full of shoes and dresses that I had no room at all for a funky, creative costume. I wonder what I can be based off my wardrobe? I guess I can go as a magazine editor…?
However you celebrate Halloween, these Mail Bombs should start your day off with kick…
…let’s not delay!
First, reader Chanel fell in love with yesterday’s Ciara post! She says, “I neeeed these shoes in my life!! LOL!!”
Can you find out the designer, and maybe some good alternatives??
Adriana searched and found that Cici is wearing these Balenciaga Patent Escarpin Booties from its Fall 2008 collection:
Here are a few less expensive alternatives:
1. RSVP Macey Boot, $83. 2. Donald J Pliner Chad Bootie, $290. 3. Lotus Zip Front Ankle Bootie, $240.
Next Cherelle says, “I saw this picture of Julissa at a BET premier, and I was wondering where I could find her skirt?
… Whether it’s the exact make or a replica, I think it’s hot fall look!”
Pair a black top and tights with these beauts for a similar style:
1. Amuleti J Knee Length Skirt, $238. 2. Forever 21 Mina Slub Textured Skirt, $20. 3. Robert Rodriguez Tweed Tie Front Skirt, $160. 4. Milly Stretch Cotton Bow Pencil Skirt, $130.
Jess from Jersey says, “I’m not exactly sure why Mel B. has been getting so much spotlight these past few months but I AM taking notice of her major style game. Can we please talk about this dress she has on?
“I love this look for two reasons: 1) She manages to pull off the conservative but sexy look- snaps. 2) This is extremely seasonally appropriate but the pop of color is a nice change from the more typically muted fall colors. I need this look! I love it, from the fishnet stockings down to the bold red pumps. Any suggestions?
Sure! Achieve Mel B’s chic with these high and low priced items:
1. Diane von Furstenberg Ludlow Dress in Electric Blue, $395. 2. Wolford Twenties Fishnet Stockings, $42. 3. Oh Deer! Praline Red Patent Pumps, $75. 4. Aldo Frosury Pumps, $80.
Next Fashion Bomber Bianca says, “I saw this picture of Kim Kardashian and fell in love with her over the knee boots:
“…The leather looks like buttah! 🙂
If you want a flat black over the knee boot, you can go with any of these winter ready options:
1. Banfi Zambrelli Olive Over the Knee Boot, $855. 2. Calvin Klein Footwear Women’s “Mazzie” Over-The-Knee Leather Flat Boots, $220. 3. Loeffler Randal Riley Over Knee Zip Boots, $825. 4. Steve Madden Overpass Boot, $230.
Ashley from Cali says, “I love voluminous scarves, but have never been able to find a really great one. Can you tell me more about Eve’s scarf...”
“...Or help me find something similar?
I could be wrong, but I think Eve is wearing a Yarnz Scarf:
Left to Right: Yarz Zebra Scarf, Yarnz Neo Python Scarf, $165.
They specialize in voluminous cashmere scarves in great colors and patterns. I could’ve sworn I saw Eve’s style, but couldn’t find it! If you want an alternative, Adriana found these:
Left to Right: AKA New York Scarf, $139; Asos Oversized Long Check Scarf, $20.
Lastly, a male Mail Bomb! Cheria wanted this look for her boo:
Get your squeeze the essentials of an R Les look with these:
1. Mackage Shane Moto Leather Jacket in Black, $649. 2. Stussy Deluxe Jack Plaid Shirt, $143. 3. Creative Recreation Milano Hi in Oxblood, $200.
Bisous!
If you dress up for Halloween, send me some pix!

Hot! or Hmm…Beyonce and Solange in Japan

The Knowles sisters are on their global grind, and they recently attended the Eight Million Ginza Gates Store Opening in Tokyo, Japan.

beyonce-solange

Both sisters seem to be tapping into alter egos, with Beyonce wearing a body clinging club dress for a day appointment, and Solange playing demure in a belted jumper. While their shoes are definitely hot!…
…do you love their outfits?
Hmmm?
Say your peace!
