Show Review: Nanette Lepore

Adriana again!

When friends bemoan that fashion is boring right now, I always ask them how much they’re paying attention to the contemporary scene, where, to my mind, some of the most exciting style moments are happening. Yesterday’s Nanette Lepore Spring 2010 collection, for instance, is a fine example.

White-shirtdress
Mini-sarong-skirt
Olive-Pants-Crochet-top

Lepore, who’s known mostly her for uber-girly looks that sometimes border on the frilly and frivolous, really evolved with this line, presenting a look that retained its feminine sensibility while playing with silhouettes and graphic designs that were more abstract and modern than her usual offerings.

One-shoulder-dress
Ruffle-top
Boyfriend

I’m a devotee of Splendid and James Perse so the cotton pieces here really impressed, especially the striped one-shoulder dress and the crocheted bib on a few of the tops. The colors were also really enjoyable: bright citrus hues and jewel tones that were just the slightest bit muted, enough to lend the clothes a more sophisticated, sobering air.

Orange-dress
Balloon-jacket
Yellow-dress

Another favorite was the above balloon-sleeve khaki jacket, which I thought was a smart take on the strong shoulder trend without giving it the normal boxy treatment. And I think you’ll all love the wedge booties that accompanied each look: strong, distinct, and playfully sexy. Nanette did include some of the femme frocks she’s known for but even they were somewhat quieter here, and not rife with her normally blaring girlish overtones.

Show Review: Tory Burch Spring 2010

Hey Bombshells,
Adri here with my review of yesterday’s Tory Burch Spring 2010 presentation.

tory_burch_logo

Normally, the protocol in the tents is that you display your line in a runway show but this season, TB decided to do something a little different and introduced her Spring collection as a presentation, instead.

tory_burch_atmosphere

The presentation format, in which the looks are displayed all at once and models stand stationary, gained momentum last season and carried over to this one as designers attempt to keep the production costs of shows down. I for one love it: it’s more intimate and allows you to get a much better feel for the pieces, not to mention that it often puts you in close proximity to fashionables you’d usually be rows and rows away from.

That’s Tory taking Vogue‘s Anna Wintour and Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo through the collection, something you’d never get this close to at a usual show. Anna’s bodyguards were not a game (too many memorable PETA moments to be otherwise, I’m sure) and cleared people out with no mercy, but it was still fun to see her walking around and taking in the collection just like the rest of us. Enough of the scene, though–what about the clothes?

Tweed-Suit
Green-Sequins
Sparkly-Boatneck

Burch delivered her usual, friendly Upper East Side-meets-Boho sensibility and there were some wonderful gems in the collection, especially amongst the accessories.

Blue-Oxford-Metallic-Skirt
Short-Khaki-Trench
White-Skirt-Cream-Tank
Belt

The pieces I liked most were a bronze metallic skirt/blue Oxford shirt combo that embody the SoHo Girl/Gossip Girl look Burch does so well. I also enjoyed a wide belt with a figurine-laden buckle made of enamel, as well as a short khaki trench jacket that seems perfect for spring weather.

Florals
Leather-Top
Origami-top
Pink-Suit

The colors Burch used are among my favorite for spring: bold yet simple tones that aren’t overdone with the typical staples of the seasons, florals and pastels. She also incorporated leather a lot, which is not a fabric you associate with warmer weather but the skins were so light  and well-treated that they did indeed seem feasible for the season. Also: *loved* the diversity of the models used. And there were some cute shoe selections to boot:

Shoes1
Shoes2

The moccasins have that kind of “so ugly they’re cute” quality going on, and look perfect to throw together with some jeans and a cute top for a spring afternoon in the park.
I thought it was strong showing for Tory Burch–what do y’all think?

Beauty Bomb: Eye Makeup Tips from Fashion Week!

Hi Beauty Bombers!

So not only were there some great looks on the runway but celebrities were also showing off their flair with eye makeup. Check out some tips on how to get their glam beauty looks at home!

Ciara worked the smoky eye here with a pink pout and wavy locks…

Ciara at Tracy Reese

Eyes: Use a smoky eyeshadow quad and start by using the lightest color on the entire lid from lash line up to the eyebrow.  Apply the 2nd to lightest shade on the lid only and the 3rd lightest shade to the crease.  Finish by applying the darkest shade to the upper and lower lash lines making sure to blend the colors on the lid in an upward-circular motion. Next, line the upper lash line with a black liquid liner and lower lashes with a pencil liner.  Don’t forget your mascara to finish your look!

Kelly Rowland’s look is ALL about the lashes while keeping everything else very simple.

Eyes: To really make the eyes pop, apply a natural shimmery shade to the lid, inner corners of the eyes and eyebrow arch.  Next apply a matte brown shadow to the crease of the lid.  Apply false lashes and line the upper and lower lids with a black eyeliner.  Curl both the false lashes and yours and finish by applying black mascara to upper and lower lashes.

Extra Tip: To put more emphasis on your eyes, pull hair back to make your face and eyes the focal point.

Keri Hilson’s sultry, dramatic eye complemented her jersey dress. Loves it!

Eyes: Apply a plum shadow to the lid from the lash line to the crease.  Use a charcoal shadow on the outer corners and blend towards the inner corner of the eye. Add a highlighter to the brow bone and inner corner and line the upper and lower lashes with black liner.  Use a volumizing mascara in black to finish the look and make sure to get both the upper and lower lashes.

Go forth and get gorgeous!

Show Review : Baby Phat Spring / Summer 2010

The stars came out in droves last night for Baby Phat’s Spring 2010 collection, Moroccan Kiss:

Baby-Phat-Roseland-Ballroom

Baby Phat Spring 2010 Show Roseland Ballroom

As soon as I walked into Roseland Ballroom, I spied several celebrities peppering the front row, including the elusive Amber Rose, stylist June Ambrose, raven haired Kim Kardashian, and more:

After about half an hour, the show began with a loud blast of music, as brightly colored clothes and a bass driven soundtrack literally shook up the room:

Kimora’s Spring 2010 collection mixed the easy feel of 70’s separates with Moroccan opulence and style. Using a color palette of coral, turquoise, pink, and violet, she showcased laced blouses, draped dresses, sequined separates, and tailored outerwear all with oodles of gold jewelry and embellishments:

The line included skin clinging jewel toned dresses, colorblocked flouncy tops, floor grazing floral maxi dresses, and easy oversized white shirts , predominantly worn with gold accented sandals and oversized tote bags. Artfully combining tie dye, acid wash, and look-at-me patterns, Kimora presented a line made for a cool tween or young adult with a daring sense of their blooming sensuality:

My favorites included ruffled monokinis in navy and exotic print:

And bright sequined skirts that reflected the gold dust on the runway:

Out of all of Kimora’s collections, this one seemed the most wearable. I could see all of these hot items hanging on the racks in Macy’s, awaiting an eager tween or twenty something to scoop them up. From her new husband and baby to her increasingly chic collection, it seems everything for Kimora is on the uptick!
For the final walk, models stomped out to Michael Jackson’s PYT:

After a bit of a wait Kimora appeared with Ming, Aoki, and newborn Kenzo:

I also stopped Teyana Taylor after the event to ask her what she thought:

And chatted it up some more with Sheree:

What do you think of this season of Baby Phat?
