I’m partying it up with some friends here à Paris. What are you guys getting into?
With the New Year comes New Year’s Resolutions and we at the Fashion Bomb definitely want to step it up in 2010!
Before I launch into my resolutions, however, let’s take a quick look at my goals from last year:
1. Dress like Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue (Still a work in progress, but I’m getting there!)
2. Read more Fashion Literarature (I keep Phaidon’s Fashion Book by my bedside)
3. Continue to Expand the Fashion Bomb (Yup. Redesign Down, Server Transfer Happening this Weekend!)
That’s it!
My eyes always on the prize, here are my fashion resolutions for ’10.
1. Take more fashion risks
I’ll admit, I’m a conservative Suzy, and had to force myself to stop buying J.Crew blazers, skinny jeans, and button downs last year! Though I tend to go for a classic look, I realize I have the freedom to get it poppin’ with vintage, cool shades, and much more. I live in the capital of fashion and am finally going to take advantage and try some hot trends. As Coco Chanel once said, “You live but once, you might as well be amusing.” Stay tuned!
2. Switch up my hairstyle
I started out red, went for blond, faded to black, and now I am bored. I don’t think I’m going to go for shaved sides, but maybe I’ll tip my toe back into some color or learn how to sweep my locks into different styles (I have no idea how to do this!). If anything, I’m sure I can experiment with hats, headbands, or clips. Mamma needs a change!
3. Get my travel on
France is super close to a host of other countries in Europe and Africa, so I need to get moving! Though I dipped into London and Corsica last year (and went back home dozens of times), I’m itching to see more of the world and continue to fine tune my global sense of fashion and style.
4. Continue to Expand the Fashion Bomb!
As we mentioned here, 2009 was a great year, but we still have a ways to go! With more international fashion weeks (Milan and London, here we come!), posts, and celeb interviews, hopefully your faithful FBomb can climb that Style 9 list from #83 to top 10! If you have any suggestions on how we can do this, leave a comment.
That does it for me!
What are some of your New Year’s Fashion Resolutions?
Smootches!
*Have a safe, wonderful, fun-filled New Years! Vuitton and I will be off starting tomorrow, and the site will be transferring to a new server this weekend. We’ll be back and ready to boogie on Monday!
As the end of 2009 draws nigh, most of us probably have an idea of what we want our New Years resolutions to be.
Whether it’s to lose those extra Christmas dinner pounds or to make our lives more eco-friendly, we’re all contemplating how we can improve our states of being come 2010.
However, in true Fashion Bomb style, I’ll be looking at this from a sartorial point of view.
1. Wear suits
I work at a bank during the day as a teller, and we’re not required to wear suits. Just a dress shirt, dress pants, and a necktie. But I figured that I should get my grown man on in the new year and invest in quality, but affordable suits for work, as well as for the weekends. You never know what’s gonna pop up, and you wanna look good in case something does.
2. Get an iPhone
Believe it or not, fashion and technology go hand in hand. And the war that went on in my head for the past 5 or so months has finally come to a screeching halt. I’ve decided to get an iPhone over a Blackberry. I just appreciate the duality involved in having a phone that can store copious amounts of music instead of having a cell phone and an iPod. In 2010, let’s just kill two birds with one stone…figuratively of course. We don’t want PETA to come a-knockin’:)
3. Casual Trousers
Everyone loves a great jean with a great fit. But casual trousers can refine a look without seeming too pretentious. And to make it more casual without losing the sophistication, they can be paired with a pair of crisp white or gray sneakers.
And lastly,
4. Donate!
I recently cleaned out my closet and separated the things that I don’t wear anymore from the things I do, and wound up with a ton of things to donate. It’s always good to spread some cheer, even after the holidays. And it’ll definitely make you feel better to know that you helped someone. Plus, the closet space will surprise you.
Regular Guest Blogger Danielle from the Style and Beauty Doctor has a few Beauty Resolutions as well!
Enjoy!
***************************************************************************************** It’s that time of year again! The time of year where I start poking at my belly to assess how many pounds I need to pledge to lose by spring and finally start looking at those Facebook pics where someone tagged me looking less than stellar to pick apart my appearance. To get my beauty on this year, I’ve made the following two resolutions: 1. Grow long, thick, beautiful Oprah hair.
Sure, it takes a village to get the ‘O’ primped and ready to infiltrate your television sets, but whether your hair is relaxed or natural, there are some inexpensive and easy things you can do at home to do right by your ‘do. Moisture, protein, and staying away from heat are three.
Following in the footsteps of the legions of internet hair care pros, I moisturize my hair like I’m going to be singing back-up for Ashford and Simpson. As you know, our hair can be very dry–especially when you use chemicals like permanent hair dyes and relaxers. Hair that is too dry will eventually break and there goes your growth *sigh*. Properly moisturizing your hair (particularly the ends since it’s the oldest hairs on our head) helps to avoid breakage and retain length. Daily moisturizing (I like Luster’s S-Curl Activator Moisturizer–yes, you read that correctly–because it really gives my hair the moisture it needs, and no, it won’t give you an s-curl) and weekly deep conditioning (Nexxus Humecrtress is one of my favorites) are definite musts.
Now before going all “Jermaine Jackson” with the moisturizer—make sure you also give your hair protein treatments (Phyto Specific Vital Creme Bath makes my hair super shiny and healthy, but also try Aphogee Intensive Two Minute Reconstructor or Nexxus Emergencee). Too much moisture can have a similarly negative effect on the hair that not enough moisture does. Excess moisture can make the hair too soft and weak, causing it to break as well. You’ll know your hair needs a protein treatment if when wet the hair feels “gummy” and immediately breaks when you tug on a small section. Making the right balance between moisture and protein calls for you to have a close relationship with your hair since not all hair care regimens work for everyone.
Heat on our hair can be like that one girlfriend you have who talks about you behind your back, but lends you her Gucci pumps. Limiting the amount of heat you use on your hair (in conjunction with moisture and protein treatments) will allow you to retain more length. Try letting your hair air-dry (I wash my hair at night and then wet wrap it while secured under a silk scarf as I sleep and it’s dry in the morning) or if you’re not ready to forego heat styling, go for a roller-set which helps to distribute heat evenly throughout your hair as opposed to a blow dryer. Try to limit your use of curling irons and flat irons to a bare minimum. If you wrap your hair at night after a fresh roller-set, you can keep your curls for up to a week. Or try pin curls (roll your hair like you would if you were wearing curlers and secure the roll with a bobby pin then remove the pins after some time).
Lady O says she wears braids and weaves at times to keep her real hair healthy. If you have extra disposable income and love to switch your hairstyle often, that might be the perfect option for you. Just don’t forget your real hair underneath needs moisture, protein, and several vacations from heat.
2. Get the hands of a pampered housewife.
I’ll admit it–I have ashy hands. Yes, my face will be beat to the gods, but if you look down at my hands, chances are they’ll look like I’ve been boxing with rocks. I’m a germaphobe and work a day job in an industry where shaking hands is a constant so I wash my hands about a million times a day. And then I don’t always remember to moisturize my hands. And that my friends, spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
OK—and I have another confession–I don’t always remember to remove nail polish chips from my hands. Living a busy lifestyle called for me to drop somethingfrom my routine. But in 2010, I pledge to always have a manicure. Whether it be a quick DIY or a salon manicure (like the fab lace manicure shown below created by celeb manicurist Elle), my hands will no longer look like I stuck them in a pencil sharpener.
To keep my hands super soft in 2010, at least twice a week, I vow to slather them in Vaseline and cover them with gloves overnight. I also vow to remember to moisturize them after my OCD hand-washings. And if I can’t get to a salon, I will manicure my own hands with long-lasting nail polish like the ones from the Sephora for OPI collection (shown below).
That’s it for me—beautiful hair and soft hands will definitely take me far in 2010. But what about you? What are some of your Beauty Resolutions for 2010?
*****************************************************************************************
Danielle, you are hilarious! That Ashy Larry picture *killed* me. Dead.
But good beauty resolutions!
What are yours Beauty Bombshells?
As the year comes to a close, it’s time to look back at which trends we’d like to bring with us to 2010, and which should stay firmly in 2009! The Fashion Bomb has compiled the following fads, but you tell us: Should we take ’em or leave ’em?
First up: Bandleader Jackets:
Whether you blame it on Balmain or Beyoncé, metallic trimmed bandleader jackets dominated catwalks and sidewalks in 2009, spawning look-a-likes by everyone from Alice & Olivia to Target. While the cut was definitely cool, I’d have to give a strong side eye to anyone rocking the exact braided, multi-button look in the new year. This hot trend is ovah–leave it in ’09!
Ripped Jeans
Every celeb from Ashanti to Rihanna was spotted wearing ripped jeans this year, most notably J Brand’s Thrashers as pictured above. The rocker look is a recurring trend that always exudes chic edginess. Let’s take it to 2010!
Open Toe Shoe Boots
Open Toe Shoe Boots played up both dresses and skinny jeans in 2009, but I’ll be honest, the look always confused me. The cut could be more stifling than sandals in summer months, and in winter, your toes will freeze! Of course fashion standouts Rihanna and Ciara managed to make the stompers look hot, but hmm, not too sure illogical accessories need to endure into our new year. Save your time and money for things that never go out of style like coupons for cologne, perfume and makeup. Leave ’em in 2009!
Leggings, leggings, leggings
2009 saw multiple celebs, most notably Amber Rose, rocking leggings in every color, style, and sheen imaginable. Purple or green, ripped, laced, or zipped, leggings were worn under tunics but more often as figure illuminating, butt lifting pants. I’ll cosign a legging for a comfy weekend ‘fit, but personally think spandex leggings as pants should not endure. Leave ’em in 2009!
No Pants
What started in music videos and onstage trickled down to the masses with regular around-the-way girls opting for leotards and stockings in lieu of traditional skirts or pants.
Unless you’re Lady Gaga or Beyoncé, it would be wise to back away from the glorified panties. Leave ’em in ’09.
Extended Shoulders
80’s era shoulders breathed fresh air into fashion in 2009, adorning dresses and jackets with a seemingly cutting edge flair. The strong, sophisticated cut is too flattering and chic to die away so soon. Let’s take it to 2010!
Now guys, you had your own share of trends too!
Cardigans
Our fave men’s style icons have been embracing the prepster cardigan look, and you’ll hear no complaints from my end! Piped, cable knit or purple, this look works. We’ll discuss the big chains later, but your cardis can stay. Let’s take ’em to 2010!
Lastly, Kanye’s Louis Vuitton Sneakers
Kanye West tried his hand at designing sneakers for Louis Vuitton, and the colorful kicks were a certified hit amongst hip hop heads. Creating a bomb product, as well as supporting and rocking said product with purpose is definitely a trend I can cling to. Let’s take it to 2010!
What do you guys think? Which trend would you take? And which would you leave in ’09?
Singers John Legend and Estelle celebrated John’s birthday recently in NYC, with John in a smart suit with bowtie and Estelle in a cute bright blue dress, zippered motorcycle jacket, and light catching accents. Though the two are not a couple, the look could work for a fashionable pair heading out for a fun fete.
Tired of basic black? When choosing a dress for New Years, go for a more refined look with some rich color: purples, blues, hunter green. Then edge out the ensemble with accessories, jewelry, shoes, and makeup.
Today our ‘Best of 2009‘ rundown will end with a quick look at the year’s top highlights for The Fashion Bomb!
This year has been amazing for your urban fashion cyberstop–so much so we’ve outgrown our server*! We couldn’t do it without you guys, so of course our first highlight of 2009 is…
Our Fashion Bombshell of the Day Feature:
We debuted our Bombshell of the Day feature in July, and ever since we’ve received a flurry of cute pics from stylistas from Belgium to Boston to St. Maarten! Though its had its share of hiccups, it still remains one of my fave new features.
Breaking into Fashion
Always intent on offering insight into the ‘biz, we’ve strived to give you the best subjects for our Breaking into Fashion feature. From designer Rachel Roy to celebrity stylists like Phillip Bloch and Mariel Haenn, they’ve all taken time to offer good, sound advice to all you future industry insiders. In the New Year we want to continue to give our best!
Celebrity Sightings
International fashion weeks have allowed us amazing access to our fave celebs. Next year we definitely want to keep it poppin’, even perhaps dropping into shows in Milan and London to give you even more runway reviews and star exclusives.
Awards and Recognition
In 2009, the Fashion Bomb won Judges’ Vote for Best Style & Fashion blog and even crept onto Style 9’s 99 most influential blog list. We’ve got our eyes on that number one spot, and hope you guys will stick along for the ride!
This wonderful year wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing Fashion Bomb Team and you fabulous readers!
Here’s to many more!
Smootches!
*We’ve grown too big to stay on our current server! We will be transitioning to a *new server* starting Thursday. No more Errors, once and for all. Woot!
Everytime I click on www.patriciafield.com, my fashionista tastebuds are tickled by all the yummy bangles, handbags, and creative separates!
I was delighted to see that the Sex & the City stylist created a tribute to Keith Haring with fun items like an $120 Scarf Dress, $72 Border Print Scarf, and $80 Plastic Clutch. I know where I’m doing my post Christmas shopping…
Lucky you, it seems Patricia is offering 20% purchases of $200 or more with the code ‘PATMONEY.‘ Log on to www.patriciafield.com to browse.
While there were many fashion highs in 2009, unfortunately, there were a few lows as well.
This year witnessed the loss of a music and fashion icon, a trailblazing model, a nascent clothing label, and more.
Let’s take a look back in remembrance and reverence.
Michael Jackson:
In June, fans were shocked by the passing of music icon Michael Jackson. On top of scoring dozens of number one hits in his lifetime, MJ also initiated several trends, making red leather jackets, glitter gloves, and fedoras de riguer for fashionable followers young and old. His memory lives on in the music and movements he initiated. We will continue to reference them for years to come.
Naomi Sims
In August we lost Naomi Sims, the model who designer Halston said, “…was the first. She was the great ambassador for all black people. She broke down all the social barriers.” The Philadelphia native covered Cosmopolitan and Life Magazines and was the first black woman to land the cover of Ladies Home Journal in 1968. The pioneering glamazon paved the way for contemporary brown skinned models like Arlenis, Chanel, Sessilee, and Jourdan. She will be missed.
Kanye’s Pastelle Clothing Line
Before we could even get excited about Kanye’s ‘Pastelle’ clothing line, MTV News reported that the collection would, “never, ever, ever come out.” Too bad, as it seems our Fashionable Man of 2009 has an eye for cut and design, and already scored quite well with his Nike Air Yeezy’s and Louis Vuitton sneaks. Better luck next year, Kanye, we’re all watching and waiting for your next creative move. We’re sure it’ll be fabulous.
Vibe Magazine
In June, Daily Finance announced the shuttering of Vibe Magazine. The Hip Hop monthly, known for its intelligent, spot on writing, and finger-on-the-pulse reporting closed its downtown offices and bid adieu to its talented staff. Though the print magazine recently relaunched in smaller form, we’ll still miss the Vibe of the olden days, where ed notes by Danyel Smith and eye catching fashion spreads by Memsor Kamaraké delighted and awed.
What will you miss the most?
*Honorable Mentions: Pour out a little liquor as well for J.Lo’s Sweetface and Andre 3000’s Benjamin Bixby Line.
