So if you’re a Fashion Bomb vet, you’d know that I’ve had my run ins with rocking knockoffs. When my family took a trip to China in 2006, I copped a fake Burberry scarf that led to a queen calling me out…it was embarrassing enough for me to swear off knockoffs for good!
For that reason, I hmmm very hard when I spy a knockoff anywhere, especially outside of Chinatown stalls.
If you can’t, then you may be able to justify buying the lower priced version. I mean, you can definitely get the look for a lot less.
But typically with a $46 shoe, you get what you pay for: a slanted, easily breakable stiletto heel, fake leather, and studs that will pop off with even the slightest turn.
Is it even worth it? And can you handle the fear of being spotted with a *gasp* fake?
Hey Guys!
Today we’re wishing a Happy Belated Birthday to Linzi, a New Orleans native currently attending Howard University in Washington D.C.
Linzi was actually nominated by her friends Crystal and Ayanna who say, “We’ve known Linzi for years and she has always had a great eye for fashion.”
” We would describe her style as a great mix of edgy and classy.”
“… She is a beautiful person inside and out. Her birthday is May 31st, and we believe that this would be a great birthday present for her.”
Happy Belated Linzi! I hope you celebrated in style.

:Faithful Fashion Bomb reader Jordan says, “I’m going to be getting a new BlackBerry (or Crackberry, as some deem it) next month. I was wondering if there were some designer skins/cases for BlackBerry phones (specifically the Curve 8530). My friend has a DVF iPhone case, and I would love if there was something similar for the BlackBerry.”
Hey Jordan! Everyone from Louis Vuitton to Pierre Hardy to Hermès carries Iphone cases that can also be used to upgrade your Crackberry.
I recently had a brief chat about hair weaves and extensions with celebrity hairstylist Kim Kimble. Kim is the mastermind behind the styles you’ve seen on Beyonce, Kerry Washington, Shakira, and many more. Should you wear a weave or are considering one, definitely take notes.
Fashion Bomb Daily: What are some tips for keeping your own hair healthy while wearing extensions? How do you prevent/take care of “weave itch”?
Kim Kimble: Keep the scalp fresh and clean by using a scalp treatment (like Kimble Hair Care Systems Scalp Relief). Detangling shampoos and conditioners (such as Kimble Hair Care Systems Untangle Shampoo and Untangle Conditioner) will keep the extensions from pulling on your hair. Silk pillowcases/bonnets are also a great investment as they will help keep your hair and the weave from drying out. The products will keep the weave fresh and smelling good. Be sure that when you wash your hair/weave, you let it air dry.
FBD: After extensions get taken out, what are some tips on how to style/maintain your own hair? Sometimes it’s tough going from 20 inches of hair to 4 inches…lol. How do you get your own hair to not feel so thin after taking the weave out?
KK: Use some thickening products to thicken it up so that you feel like you have hair on your head. Thickening shampoos and conditioners, etc.
FBD: How long should one keep a weave in?
KK: Six to eight weeks is ideal, but you never want to go past 3 months. The average person naturally sheds about 60-80 hairs naturally. If you leave the weave in too long, your natural hair will start to shed and you will have a big mess when you finally remove the weave.
FBD: What are some upcoming weave trends?
KK: Clip ins, partial pieces, temporary extensions, straight and wavy textures, but there is an abundance of curly textures in the summer. In winter, there is more of a demand for more sleek and wavy styles.
FBD: What are some tips for ladies using weaves/extensions to transition out of a relaxer?
KK: Wearing a full head weave with extensions – find an extension color or cut that looks best on a full head.
FBD: What is the best type of hair to use for weaves/extensions?
KK: Some of my favorite hair types are virgin remi hair, Indian, Malaysian and yaki texture. However, when getting weaves/extensions, it’s extremely important to match the hair type to your natural texture to ensure the best and most natural look.
FBD: Any tips on wigs?
KK: Find the most natural looking wig, have it cut and colored custom to your needs, and it will look more natural.

Model and object of one of my girl crushes based solely on totally superficial things (lol) Liya Kebede seems to always have this aura around her face, doesn’t she? OK, photoshopping aside there is definitely something about Liya—a soft glow is what I call it. It’s that, I’m wearing *some makeup*, but my beautiful skin speaks for me kind of thing.
Should you be so inclined, I’ve got some tips on how to get Liya’s beautiful look.
First things first, our skin needs to be in order. If you’ve already got decent skin, you’re halfway there! If not, it’s time to get thee on a skin care regimen based on your skin type. And this should go without saying, but tame those brows (still working on that brow post for you…lol) and rid the face of extra facial hair. You want skin to be as smooth as possible if you’re going for a look like this.
Most of us know cleanse, tone, moisturize, right? The products you used should be based on your skin type (normal, oily, dry, or combination and then add in aging to each type if applicable), but you should also pay attention to how your skin behaves each season. For example, I need a heavier moisturizer in the winter as the harsh NYC temps cause my skin to get sooo dry. Then in the summer that playa-hatin’ NYC humidity causes my skin to appear more oily. Then I can occasionally be attacked with adult acne which leads to dark spots. Oh, then there’s dullness, too. To make a long story short, what I use on my skin changes just as my skin does.
I’d be here all day talking about skin if I were to pinpoint every product you should use for your skin type (and something tells me you don’t like long-winded posts) so I’ve broken down some quick recommendations:
Oily Skin: LUSH Coalface Cleanser, Cosmedicine Medi Matte Oil Control Lotion, Proactiv Toner Acne Prone Skin: Proactiv 3-Step System, Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Lotion (and Spot Treatment) Normal to Dry Skin: Perricone MD Gentle Cleanser, Perricone MD Face Finishing Moisturizer, Cetaphil Cleanser Dull Skin: Clinique Turnaround Concentrate Visible Skin Renewer, St. Ives Apricot Scrub, LUSH Angels on Bare Skin Cleanser, Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser
Universal Skin Tips: drink plenty of water, make sure you get your vitamins, consider a flax seed oil supplement, see a dermatologist on a regular basis, wear SPF everyday (Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock is a good one for skin of color because it’s not greasy and doesn’t leave an ashy cast on our skin).
To get some extra help in the glow department, apply a bit of a sheer foundation like NARS Sheer Glow and set it with a loose powder like BECCA Fine Loose Finishing Powder. If your skin looks great on its own, a simple light dusting of powder will do.
Go easy on the eyes, simple liner with mascara will do. If you want to up the ante, smudge your liner slightly with a smudging brush or makeup wedge.
For glowy cheeks, follow a trick loved many times over by celebrity makeup artist extraordinaire, Sam Fine: apply bronzer to the cheeks followed by a dusting of a peach blush on top. Sam loves the CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer (which I’ve been trying to track down in my neck of the woods—how do I live in a predominately black neighborhood with no Queen Collection products at my closest drugstore? grrr). You can also get this look with the Iman Sheer Finish Bronzing Powder in Afterglow which combines both bronzer and blush in one product) available at many drugstores. Totally gorgeous.
For the lips, go with a sheer stain of color like what you would get using MAC Lustreglass. Or grab some clear gloss and one of your lipsticks and make your own.
To finish, gently blot the skin with a tissue to remove excess product. Then set with a makeup setting spray (I lurve Urban Decay De Slick Oil Control Makeup Setting Spray).
Don’t forget to blow kisses at yourself when you’re done!
Reader Simara wrote in recently saying, “I have a fashion emergency!! I need an outfit for a Memorial Day Barbecue. Can you offer some cute bbq ideas? I really want to try and pull off the cropped top, but any other ideas would be great.”
Of course! Show off your patriotic side for Memorial Day in outfits that play up the good old red, white, and blue. Though you’re probably super excited about brushing off your summer whites, go for patterned looks in case an errant splash of barbecue sauce comes your way. Skew towards flat sandals for comfort or a subtle wedge heel if you need a little height.
Try these on for size:
