Style Week Jamaica 2011 Show Review: Allan Virgo, HOD, Kevin O’Brian, and more

Hey!
So I’m headed back to New York today (woo hoo!), but wanted to give you guys the scoop on a few designers I spied during Style Week Jamaica 2011. The line up for this year’s showcase included familiar names like LaQuan Smith, Sammy B, and Mataano, along with new names like Ashley Martin, Frenchester Christie, Lisa McIntosh, Simone Gordon of T&T Fashions, and Andre Shirley.
Check out a few highlights.

Allan Virgo:
By day, Jamaican born Allan Virgo designs outerwear for Michael Kors. By night, the 26-year-old FIT graduate fashions his own line of beautifully colored maxi dresses, one shoulder frocks, and asymmetrical skirts, characterized by a signature patchwork style melding different patterns and fabrics.

Though some pieces in the collection fell away from the brand’s aesthetic with plastic cut outs placed on A-line skirts, Virgo will certainly triumph by sticking to more feminine elements: crop tops, skirts, and floor grazing yet easy frocks.

HOD:

Gregory Williams of HOD called his adventurous collection, “Ninja Glam.” Models in pin cushion bras (replete with pins) sauntered down the runway in leggings, jumpsuits, and tops with dramatic elements like generous hoods and parachute like pockets.

I could see Nicki Minaj on stage twirling in any of these bold separates. Barbz approved.

Nina:

Nina’s forte is crochet. For the presentation designer Karlene Levy of the brand offered monokinis, bikinis, mini and maxi dresses in alluring knit.

The pieces seemed perfect for a relaxed vacation in a tropical paradise.

Kevin O’Brian:

Paris based Kevin O’Brian brought a bit of couture sensibility to the proceedings with dramatic face masks played up by fall away gowns comprised of lace, light reflecting material, and chiffon.

T & T:

One shoulder dresses shared the runway with alluring maxi frocks for Simone Gordon of T&T‘s segment. Out of all the designers who presented that night, these were definitely the closest to red carpet worthy.

And of course we can’t forget our very own New York designers.
Mataano presented a 70’s themed safari replete with rompers, paisley pieces, and straw hats:

And LaQuan Smith lit up the venue and closed the show with his electrically sweet ‘Hard Candy’ collection:

Claire’s Life: Style Week Jamaica 2011

Hey!
So if you follow me on Twitter, you’d know I’ve been spending lots of time by the pool since I came to Kingston. Though Style Week Jamaica is 4 days long there are only two days of shows (womenswear is tonight) and we have the afternoons free because it’s generally too hot to sit anywhere until the sun goes down. Yesterday I slipped on my Keith Haring x Patricia Field top and spent quality time with friends old and new.
Check out a few flicks:

The Fashion Bomb and Indashio. You may remember Indashio from Vh1’s Glam God, but he’s been a stylist and designer for years.

I’ve been rocking hard with my Dolce & Gabbana aviators. And I took Danielle’s makeup suggestion and wore coral lipstick.

Vintage earrings from Brooklyn’s Hooti Couture. Zebra Minx.

I’ve taken to wearing a stylish fanny pack. It’s fun, why not?

Good times.
Many thanks to Rachel aka The Greyest Ghost for snapping these pictures with her super fancy camera. A DLSR is definitely on my wish list for June…so stay tuned for more Claire’s Life:)

Fashion Bombshell of the Day: Mimi from Atlanta

So you the readers have spoken, and Bombshells of the Day are back on!
Call me naïve, but I didn’t realize how many people love the feature and come here specifically for that! As I said, I still might not post every day. If we really don’t have anyone ‘bomb’ (or close to bomb), I’ll abstain for the day. But most days, yes, we will have a Bombshell.
Which brings us to today’s beauty: Mimi, a Manhattan transplant originally from ATL:

She says, “I’m entering myself as “Fashion Bombshell of the Day” because I get complimented on my style by men and women alike.”

“.. I credit it to the classic, yet modern way that I dress. It’s figure flattering, sleek, and elegant but ALWAYS with a pop of color somewhere.”

“… I’m not very big on accessories-I’m working on that for 2011! However, I love my rose gold Michael Kors watch.”

“… I frequently rock American Apparel, Asos, Steve Madden, & Betsey Johnson. My fave luxury brands are Chanel, Michael Kors and Vince Camuto.”

“…Hope you enjoy! Check me out! Also, you can find me on twitter: @coutureangel. Ciao for now!”

Following you…now. Stay tuned for a tweet from @thefashionbomb.

Fashion Discussion: About that Bombshell of the Day…

Hey!
So Fashion Bombshell of the Day has gone through many highs and lows. We’ve turned off comments, introduced a voting system, asked participants to opt in or out of comments, and requested readers to be nice and respectful.
Still, it seems every time we showcase someone whose definition of chic might not meld with the mainstream or veers more hmm than hot, we get more than a handful of hurtful comments.

The result? Bruised feelings and readers hesitant to submit for fear they will be torn down by an exacting fashion jury.
Fashion Bombshell of the Day was always intended to be celebratory, a show-and-tell of multicultural chic from across the globe. Most of the time it is; but sometimes it devolves into something the site doesn’t stand for.

The goal of the Fashion Bomb is to uplift and showcase fashionistas of color in a positive, beautiful light. Bombshell of the Day comments can be very negative; thus tarnishing the spirit upon which this site was founded.

I enjoy Bombshells as much as you do, but will have to take responsibility and curate submissions more thoroughly. We’ll most likely continue with the feature, but relegate it to a weekly an every other day or weekly, not daily basis. Comments are on, as is voting. But I will ensure that Bombshells showcased are only the best and most fierce representations of the Fashion Bomb brand and Fashion Bomb reader.

I enjoy doing this, and want this to be a nurturing, positive, and encouraging corner in cyberspace! Hope you do too…
Smootches!
