Real Style Inspiration: How Bloggers Rock Their Winter Whites

We’re back in the throes of what feels like another polar vortex, (ick!) and it seems we can’t get sufficiently warm, no matter what we do. Perhaps a little fashion might help? Our own Claire recently showcased an all-white winter look, and now, we’re kind of obsessed with the theme. We scoured the ‘net for a little more inspiration on how to wear winter whites, and we stumbled upon a few that caught our eye.
Check ’em out:

Grasie White Coat

Proving the LBD will never go out of style, no matter what anyone says is Grasie Mercedes of Style Me Grasie, who paired hers with a white coat and charming leopard print ankle booties.

trop rouge winter whites

Christina of Trop Rouge offset her fluffy winter coat with a smart fedora and blue moto jeans, which I think I need in my closet RIGHT NOW.

styleinkhk winter white

Shirley from StyleInk HK played with different tones of winter white, starting with a cream-colored knit peplum sweater, wide-legged trousers, metallic sandals, and Chanel carryall to boot. Fab!

Kenza White Coat

Kenza added a bit of black and metallic touches to toughen up a sweet look. Loving how the zippers and hardware edge out her ‘fit! Also, those curls? Everything.

Sincerely LV Winter White

Okay, we gotta give extra points to miss Emmalyn from Sincerely Love for braving the to pose in heels in the snow! Hats off to you, Miss Thing! For her wintr’y look, she went with white skinnies, a blazer, slouchy tee, and a neutral bag and wide-brimmed hat. Cute!

Indie Electronic Alternative Winter White

Danielle from indie.electronic.alternative uplifted her look with burgundy accents and ankle boots. Love the topknot, and the natural makeup is so gorge.

Kastor and Pollux Winter Whites

Finally, Danielle and Bianca of Kastor and Pollux kept things funky, mixing shades of white with silver and neutral tones, adding dimension with textured pieces.

Claire’s Life: Latham Thomas’s Mama Glow 3 Year Anniversary Party

Claire's Life- Mama Glows 3 Year Anniversary Party 600

Happy Wednesday!
Last night my friend Latham Thomas had a party to celebrate the 3 year Anniversary of her business Mama Glow–a lifestyle hub the Huffington post described as , “a destination for women to explore their creative edge through wellbeing.” The glam mother, doula, and nutritionist invited friends out to party and fellowship–on one of the snowiest days thus far in New York!

So I took the opportunity to see how a few fab attendees dressed for the cold.

Lia (@LiaCharisma) kept the cold and snow at bay in a faux fur vest and flat boots.

Stylish friends Anthony and Maeron jazzed up their ensembles with an H&M velvet blazer on the left and a sparkly vintage top and Death by Design beenie on the right.

How fly is Miss Terri? I literally had a moment with her 3.1 Phillip Lim fur top and Vince leather leggings. She told me she wore a pair of fierce YSL mirrored boots to work, but left them at the office and switched into snow ready boots. Can’t blame her!

It’s all about layering in the cold! This young lady added some umph to all black with a striped button down and cascading chains.

And Christian and Isaiah worked pieces from J.Crew and the Kooples.

The night’s hostess, Latham, sizzled in a Herve Leger LBD, accessorized by Chanel baubles.

Rosario Dawson and her fly mom Isabel Celeste also blessed the occasion in silver and gray cocktails.

As for me, I tapped into my preppy tendencies in Acne’s ‘Romantic’ sweatshirt, worn over an American Apparel button down and Stella McCartney Axel Embroidered skirt. A pair of opaque tights and Michael Kors boots, and I was ready to battle the arctic tundra.

The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Miroslava Duma and Dasha Zhukova Apologize for Black Bondage Chair-Gate, Spanx Could Pose Health Risks, and Jay Z and Beyoncé to Perform at 2014 Grammys

um, YIKES.

um, YIKES.

• Today’s apology for abhorrent behavior comes from the folks at Buro 24/7, for the image of Garage magazine editor-in-chief Dasha Zhukova sitting on a chair made to look like a black woman in bondage. Hear ye, from the mouth (or rather, keypad) of Miroslava Duma: “Buro 24/7 team and I personally would like to express our sincerest apology to anyone who we have offended and hurt,” she wrote on Instagram. “It was ABSOLUTELY not our intention. We are against racism or gender inequality or anything that infringes upon anyone’s rights. We love, respect and look up to people regardless of their race, gender or social status. The chair in the photo should only be seen as a piece of art which was created by British Pop-Artist Allen Jones, and not as any form of racial discrimination. In our eyes, everyone is equal. And we love everybody”  Dasha Zhukova has also come out with an apology of her own:“I regret allowing an artwork with such charged meaning to be used in this context. I utterly abhor racism and would like to apologize to those offended by my participation in this shoot. Garage Magazine has a strong track record of promoting diversity and racial and gender equality in the worlds of art and fashion, and will continue in our mission to stir positive debate on these and other issues.” What do you think? (Styleite, @Miraduma)

whitenicious what a shame

• Cameroonian Singer Dencia has been getting a lot of press as of late for her new skincare line, Whitenicious, which claims to cater to people with “dark spots, acne, hyper pigmentation, dark knuckles and knees (all of which can leave your skin looking uneven)”  Sadly, it seems as if Dencia herself has been overloading on the product (or ones similar,) as she, a woman who was once of a magnificent brown hue, has bleached all evidence of melanin into oblivion, and now is as pale as raw chicken. The before and after pictures of women who have used the product also tell a different story than what’s been posted on the Whitenicious website. Sure, the women who used the stuff for their dark spots eliminated unsightly hyperpigmentation (no one is here for acne marks), but they also managed to bleach out their surrounding skin so dramatically, that they’ve become a different color. Dencia has faced a ton of criticism for her product, which she stands by on social media: “S/0 to everyone supporting whitenicious & s/0 to those indirectly supporting but thinking they’re hating with PHD worthy Essays. #FreePress.” What’s the most unfortunate part about this whole thing? Whitenicious is already sold out. Ah, colonialism. What do you think about this hot mess, Bombers and Bombshells? (Clutch)

Spanx Hi Poer Brief

• I’m one of those women who think we all could use a pair of Spanx every once in a while, but according to doctors, the wonder undergarment is killing us not-so-softly. The Huffington Post has a very interesting report on what Spanx are actually doing to you when you wear them. According to gastroenterologist Dr. John Kuemmerle, not only can shapewear contribute to acid reflux and heartburn by pushing down on your intestine, stomach, and colon, but it restricts your breathing. He adds, “increasing intra-abdominal pressure can certainly provoke episodes of incontinence.” ICK. You can also get tingling and pain in your legs, and increase your chances of getting blood clots. Also, if you rely on Spanx to help improve your posture, over time, you can wind up making it worse, according to chiropractor Dr. Karen Erickson“Shapewear is not a substitute for having strong muscles,” she says. “It’s important to develop muscle tone, because it’s those muscles that hold your posture in perfect alignment. Many people use shapewear as a crutch to avoid using those muscles” So, how does a girl avoid all the negative effects that come with a smooth underwear line and flat belly? Wear Spanx in moderation. We took a break from Bombshells with yesterday’s holiday, but are back with Ayomide from New York:

The Blogger for Fashion Freak African Chic says, “ I don’t believe my style fits into any particular category.”

” I’ve always loved dressing up and putting outfit combinations together but have never really followed popular ‘trends’.”

” However, because my family is from Nigeria, I do like to embrace my African heritage by wearing a lot of Ankara and African jewelry…”

“.. as well as sporting natural hairstyles with my looks.”

” For me the biggest component of my style is all about what makes me feel the most comfortable and confident.”

” I do this by wearing clothes that work well with my body type…”

“… and accentuate my best features.”

You’re gorgeous and have a great figure! It’d be hard for you to go wrong. Love the bright colors and your smile. Bombshell!
See more of Ayomide’s looks on her blog Fashionfreakafricanchic.com and on Instagram @yomi_campbell.

I was gonna let this be a Bomb Life exclusive, but figured…why not show you guys a bit of my casual weekend style?
So, when I get something new, I get really excited, and tend to wear it to death…! Such is the case for my ‘birthday’ top, aka 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Sono Mama Embellished Tee:

While I dressed it up with a Topshop metallic skirt for my bday, I toned it down for an afternoon of shopping and brunching in the city with a pair of light washed jeans from Zara and my Topshop check coat.

I tend to go easy on the makeup if I’m not going to an ‘event.’ You have to let your pores breathe! A great way to ‘fake’ a makeup look: swipe on a flattering shade of lipstick (in this case, I’m wearing my Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Natural N5 + gloss), and pop on some shades.

This is one way I re-used and recycled a stand out item, taking it from dressy to casual. It’s perfectly fine to wear an item as many times as you like, but I always challenge myself to try to wear it in a different way.

Send me pix of how you remixed a stand out item for inclusion in our next How Do You Wear It? Feature. Send your pix to thebomblife@gmail.com.

What is This? Russian Socialite and Garage Magazine Editor-In-Chief Dasha Zhukova Sits on a Black Woman Bondage Chair for Buro 24/7 Interview

dasha zhukova black woman chair miroslava duma buro 247 interview
Photographer Dasha Zhukova Sits on a Black Woman Chair for Buro 247 Interview

Happy Martin Luther King Day!
As we pause to reflect on Dr. King’s message of Civil Rights and equality, we must deal with the reality of modern day ignorance and racial insensitivity.
Today, Miroslava Duma’s new online magazine Buro 247 published an article on Russian socialite Dasha Zhukova. The illustration? A serene looking Zhukova sitting on a ‘black woman’ chair.

The Editor-in-Chief of Garage magazine perches on a black ‘dummy,’ (not a real human) who is nude save panties, a garter belt, elbow length gloves, and knee high boots, her folded knees suggestively pushing her naked breasts against her body. As Dasha stares out at the camera in the light filled room, she appears the total opposite of the compromised black woman on the floor. The message: prevailing, enduring white dominance and superiority, articulated in a seemingly serene yet overtly degrading way.

Black woman as objects? Jezebels? These ideas aren’t new. But just as Dr. King fought firehoses and barking dogs four decades ago so that not only black women and black people in general could be seen as human beings, the fight continues in the worlds of art and fashion. Every other day, we see black women demeaned, disrespected, and overly sexualized by the ‘other,’ our image sacrificed in the service of art.

Peggy Noland's Outrageous Oprah Dress

Remember this bullshit?

It’s troubling that Buro 247 chose to publish this article today (they will undoubtedly attest ignorance and soon issue an apology–Miroslava Duma has already deleted the picture from her Instagram, and perhaps the interview on her site will come down as well), but instances like these always serve as reminders that we have come so far, yet still have so far to go.
The art and fashion industries are the few bastions of society where blatant racism and ignorance are given the greenlight in the name of creativity.
This must stop.
Now.
See the original picture on Buro247.
*I did a bit of research, and found that the chair seems to be an iteration of this bondage chair, created by Allen Jones ca. 1969. Apparently white strippers were put in compromising positions as well.

Chair by Allen Jones, 1969, which depicts a woman bent into the shape of furniture
allen jones stripper chair

Does that make the symbolism any less troubling?
