Happy Saturday, folks!
I’m up early preparing for today’s No Basics Brunch, but wanted to pop in and tell you about a great movie I saw yesterday as part of the American Black Film Festival called, “In my Father’s House.”
The documentary centers around Che ‘Rhymefest’ Smith, a rapper from Chicago who sets off to establish a relationship with his absentee Dad.
Not sure if you’ve ever heard of Rhymefest, but he’s an accomplished artist. He co-wrote Jesus Walks with Kanye West, and also co-wrote the Academy Award winning song Glory with Common. He’s currently the creative director of Donda’s House, a non profit organization that supports artistic youths in Chicago.
In my Father’s House opens with Che looking for his father. He and his new wife recently moved into the house his Father grew up in, and Smith had a nagging feeling to establish contact with his Dad. When Che finally reaches him, he finds out that his Dad is a homeless alcoholic who has been living in the streets for the past 20 years. Over the course of the film, Che encourages his Dad to clean up his act, slow down on the drinking, find a job, and ultimately get his own place to live. In the process, Che learns more about his father and himself–and gains clarity on how he can be a better father to his children. Watch the Trailer below:
I was invited by my friend Beverly Camhe (pictured below with yours truly and Che Smith) to see the film, and am glad she did! The film was heart warming, and touched on the larger issue of the effects of black men growing up In fatherless homes.
I chatted with Che about what he hoped people would take away after watching the film. He said, “I want everyone to be able to take away how to share their own truth. Their story may be different from mine. Nobody’s story is quite unique, we all go through the same things at different times. I want people to be ok with opening [up] the book of their life. That’s how we ultimately are gonna heal ourselves and each other. Stop fronting with each other about what it is. We know what it is, so let’s make it right.” He’s working on an album called Pieces, which is about putting the pieces together after everything falls apart. Keep an eye out for In My Father’s House in September and Che’s album soon!
After chatting with Che, I headed across town for a screening of Tai Beauchamp’s new makeover show on TLC called Dare to Wear (did you check it out?).
The show gets two people with totally opposite style aesthetics to switch clothes to get them out of their comfort zones. The show concludes with fabulous makeovers. See a snippet here:
Tai invited a bevy of editors to watch her show over Popcorn and mini bottles of Moet.
I grabbed a pic with Tai and Tasha Smith before calling it a night!
Stay tuned for more outfit pix on TheBombLife.com.
Set your DVR’s to watch Tai’s show Dare to Wear every Friday at 9pmEST on TLC! And stay tuned to this space for updates on In My Father’s House.
What do you think?
The weekend’s here! Yes, yes ya’ll. We’ve finally reached another glorious Friday and I couldn’t be any happier! The next two days will be dedicated to baby showers, weddings and grad parties. And, I’m so ready.
But first, let’s check out some of the hottest looks from our favorite fashionistas.
The 2015 Tony Awards were held this past week and the stars came out full throttle! But, Jennifer Lopez was the belle of the ball in a navy blue, embellished Valentino number. The singer/actress also donned a dark lip and an old Hollywood bob. She definitely brought the drama with this one!
I’m super excited about the release of the movieDope! The film’s director Rick Famuyiwa has spearheaded some of my favorite flicks including The Wood and Brown Sugar. But, I digress, lol. One of the film’s stars, Chanel Iman, was spotted at the LA premiere rocking a glistening silver Kaufman Franco gown and, yes, she shut it down. The model kept her accessories simple with drop earrings and dainty rings. Yes!
Kyemah Mcentyre has made quite the splash with her original African-inspired prom gown, hasn’t she? I mean, this girl is everywhere! From fashion blogs to my Instagram feed, her creative take on a high school tradition has inspired the masses. In addition, her uplifting message of embracing individuality only sealed the deal! I can officially say that I am now a fan (and a follower) of this inspirational young woman. Go Kyemah!
Yellow is currently my go-to color. If I need a stylish pick-me-up, I tend to deviate towards it’s golden goodness. In this case, Garcelle Beauvais chose to go the Zara route in a layered low back dress. The frock also boasts draped detailing and wide cut sleeves. To complete her look, the gorgeous actress slipped on a pair of multicolored Aquazzura leather sandals. This woman doesn’t age!
To round off our Look of the Week, we have Mindy Kaling! The comedian was on hand for Disney Pixar’s premiere of Inside Outwhile flaunting a Max Mara crop top and black skirt. Her sophisticated look balances the perfect amount of sexiness while leaving a little to the imagination. I loved her addition of the colored pumps as well!
Men’s Spring 2016 collections kicked off today in London, and our favorite street style photog, David Nyanzi, was on the scene to check it out.
Take a look at some of the men and women he captured on Day 1.
Zoe Saldana made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in a Tanya Taylor Fall 2015 Colorblock Long Sleeve Blouse and High Waist Slit Skirt:
Her top was shown as a turtleneck on the runway, with her skirt being accented with a multicolor rope belt accenting the model’s waist. Black tights and peep-toe platform sandals also added flair to the catwalk ensemble.

Though he doesn’t drop any clues about the upcoming collaboration, Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing does talk about his relationship with H&M in a new video. Â In addition to saying that he partnership is “pushing the concept of diversity and communicating with the world,” Rousteing admits that he too, just like us, is an “H&M boy.” (Complex)
Idris Elba is stepping out of acting and into fashion for a short stint. The Londoner kicked off the London Collections: Men this week with a Superdry collaboration featuring 250 pieces. Â With knitwear, tailored shirting, denim and even sportswear, it’s a full lifestyle collection. Expect the range to hit stores in November. (Hollywood Reporter)
Though he seems to always cut a pretty dapper figure in a suit, Tom Ford apparently hasn’t worked out in years. He revealed this and more in a recent interview. Amongst his other statements was one condemning Dolce & Gabbana for their views on in vitro fertilization. The designer said: “I found [Dolce’s comments] incredibly ignorant — and you can say that — and insensitive. I was quite shocked, I have to say. They haven’t retracted it all, they defended it.” (Four Pins)
A large part of the Oscar de la Renta business is in the bridal sector; the founding designer really knew how to make women not only look but feel their most beautiful on their special days. Â And now, with a new designer at the helm in Peter Copping, some of the industry has been wondering whether he possessed the same skill. Â If his first bridal creation is any indication, he most certainly does! (Vogue)
Next month, the first New York Men’s Fashion Week will debut, will contain offerings for women besides eye candy.  American designer Michael Bastian is set to debut womenswear on his menswear catwalk, following years of women co-opting his pieces for their own closets. 27 pieces in total, the new line will launch in clothes for Spring 2016. Expect a focus on sweaters, shirts and bottoms. (The Observer)
Last time Gregory was featured on FBD was December, 2013! Let’s see how his style has progressed since:
He writes, “I’d describe my style as sophisticated yet fun.”
” I think it’s important to maintain a level of sophistication while still having fun with your outfit.”
” I want to have fun in a respectable way.”
” I like to consider my style as ART.”
” I draw inspiration from various places; color, mood, and sometimes street fashion.”
Very Dapper! Would’ve loved just one pic without sunglasses, but your style shines through!
