It’s undeniable that there’s quite a bit going on with race relations and injustices in America right now. It was only this weekend that Usher wore a ‘Juneteenth’ tee at the Essence Music Festival and asked “Have we truly achieved our independence?” Well it seems that on Twitter, a social media celebrity was taking beauty bloggers to task for not being as vocal.
Luvvie Ajayi is known for her stern reads and epic rants dispersed through her websites and dispatched in parts through her Twitter feed — soon she’ll have a book to deliver the tea called “I’m Judging You.” Last week the subject of her latest rant was quite surprising: black beauty bloggers. She started things off with:
Black beauty bloggers, I know yall have “brands” but so many of you have kept on like ain’t shit happening but makeup. You cute, doe.
Of course, that was only the beginning. What followed was the Twitter star taking bloggers to task for staying silent a time when the community needs as many voices as possible and all for money. She fired off a few resounding dispatches:
Bloggers who are afraid to speak up for fear of losing ad dollars. Companies who would get offended aren’t the ones giving you $ ANYWAY.
You can read the full thing in order as it was archived by Luvvie herself. But of course, this wouldn’t be the internet if her critique didn’t come with a critique of it’s own. Gina McCauly of What About Our Daughters took up the mantle, criticizing Ajayi’s assessment saying “This is about attempting to dictate how Black women must grieve in public. Not even our sorrow belongs to us.“
McCauly explained: “Black women and girls have a right to have spaces where they can be carefree, flighty, flaky, frivolous, and funny. Occasionally we need a break. For some people, that’s a beauty blog.“
What do you think? Being fashion/beauty bloggers/journalists here at The Fashion Bomb, we think it’s a pretty interesting conversation. We definitely are advocates of covering diversity issues — we’re really predicated on the idea — and see where Luvvie is coming from.
I’ve actually been so criticized for attempting to stay on the style topic while showing awareness of current events, that I’ve concluded that fashion, style, and intensely charged political issues don’t mix. So if I march, I march without a camera man or a blog post. If I support, I do so in silence because I feel anything else will be seen as frivolous. And because fashion is, at its core, 100% frivolous, I’ve concluded that perhaps these issues don’t have a place on a fashion blog.
What do you think? Should fashion and beauty bloggers stick to their lipsticks and clothes or should they use the enormous platforms they’ve garnered in even the smallest of ways to support their communities? And if so, how?

On Instagram this weekend, Kevin Hart raised eyebrows when he posted a few pictures wearing matching clothes with former soccer star David Beckham. He captioned one “Hanging out with @DavidBeckham…he has to stop copying my style #Twins.” While he didn’t admit to why the two were hanging out, it’s now been announced that Hart will star in a video campaign for a new David Beckham range at H&M. If you exist, you’ve no doubt heard of the company Burt’s Bees that hocks natural ingredient-focused personal care products. Yesterday news broke that the co-founder Burt Shavitz, for whom the label is named, died. Though Shavitz exited the company in 1999, he’s been continually paid by them as a “brand ambassador.” (Fashionista)
When she’s not cutting you into little pieces dressed in Tom Ford and Adam Selman, apparently Rihanna is making bikini tops out of scarves. Yes, she does have a stunner of a Lisa Marie Fernandez swimsuit but the star has no problems taking a printed scarf and tying it around her chest to cover the essential bits. American Apparel has been going though tough times. First they were going through them under founder Dov Charney’s direction, and now, with him out of sight and mind, they are going through them all on their own. In a recent press release, the company said that they’ve fallen on hard times and are putting measures in place to cut costs by $30 million. There is a problem though: “Even if American Apparel increases revenue and cuts costs, there can be no guarantee that the Company will have sufficient financing commitments to meet funding requirements for the next 12 months without raising additional capital, and there can be no guarantee that it will be able to raise such additional capital.” That doesn’t sound good. It seems that styling Lady Gaga is the training ground for becoming a designer. Since her first fashion director and stylist Nicola Formichetti left her and went to design for Mugler and Diesel, his old first assistant, Brandon Maxwell, who functions as Gaga’s current stylist, is planning to launch his own brand. Debuting this September, the label will likely be eponymous and will focus on eveningwear with lean black suiting and gowns. Maxwell has largely been responsible for Gaga’s transition from the outre stylings of meat dresses and looks fashioned out of beanie babies to elegant and sensible designs by everyone from Alaia to Maxwell himself (featured above). It’s been an exceedingly busy past few weeks between the BET Awards and ESSENCE Fest! ESSENCE was all about brand synergies, so after hosting the Golden Carpet for McDonalds, I headed over to the My Black is Beautiful booth on the 4th of July to chat beauty and style with celebs and fellow bloggers who stopped by.
Elle Varner passed through, looking patriotic in a red, white, and blue striped set by Black Fleece. In response to the question, “What are you working on to feel Altogether Beautiful,” she said, “I’m working on loving myself. And when you love yourself, you can’t help but feel beautiful.” Preach!
She also talked about her must have beauty product (tinted moisturizer), and about her fashion style (she described it as quirky). There will be video sometime soon, so stay tuned!
After chatting with Elle, I headed across the street to the Marriott for a Fashion Bomb Daily Meet N Greet/shopping party with Meow and Barks Boutique.
The Jacksonville, Florida based store is chock full of trendy, affordable pieces and loads of Bombshells popped by to shop it up!
I finally met former Bombshells and design duo the DPiper Twins. I need both of those dresses!
And this fashionista looked electric in neon tones.
I wore Versace sandals, and added a pop of red with Covergirl lipgloss.
