Diamond jewelry added some extra sparkle.

Show Review: Tracy Reese Spring 2016

With Spring comes a sense of hope for warm weather ahead and anticipation for vacations and Summer Fridays to come. Tracy Reese played on that sense of elation and good cheer for her Spring 2016 collection which was downright pretty, chock full of girlishness, shimmer, and sheer detailing for a flash of skin.

We all know that florals for Spring aren’t groundbreaking (thanks Miranda Priestly), but they felt fresh here on an easy off-the-shoulder dress, leggy mini frock paired with a studded yellow coat and black sheer tights, a bold maxi number layered under a cropped leather biker jacket, and an easy camisole given added flair with a lace sheer blouse and easy rust trousers.

Lace overlays injected a dose of old school femininity to a glamorous sequin slipdress, a roomy printed coat, lime green bralette for a pop of color, and relaxed pants.

Separates made a huge impact with button-accented tops, flirty knee-length skirts, and printed jacket and trouser combinations that played on the pajama trend. The shoes were also a focal point of the looks— designed in collaboration with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Reese is best known for her dresses and there were some FLOTUS-worthy frocks in the collection. A printed short-sleeve crepe dress was pleasant and would work with the assortment’s icy blue booties or sneakers, while a white lace fishtail gown was one step away from bridal-perfect, save for its sheerness.

My favorite pieces on display were those that were simple in silhouette, but adventurous in color. A copper caped playsuit is standout enough to last in a modern-day woman’s wardrobe for years to come and a silver biker jacket will inject a rocker chic edge to everything from menswear-inspired suiting to the most prim and proper sheath.

Show Review: Derek Lam Spring 2016

With “What Happened, Miss Simone?” making a major splash this Summer and the biopic on the iconic songstress starring Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo set to be released this December, all eyes (and ears) are on Nina Simone. Not that we’ve ever lost interest in the musician, but her memory is resurfacing in a way that could be compared to her popularity in her heyday. Derek Lam was inspired by Simone’s strength for his Spring 2016 collection.

The influence was more figurative than literal, though Lineisy Montero’s afro and layers for the opening look of the assortment did seem to be a modern-day spin on Simone’s go-to ensembles. The effortlessness and ease of femininity was on the menu with relaxed open cardigans that tied at the neckline and sleeves, a functional suede trench that played on Lam’s love for the 70’s, simple frocks in the same aforementioned texture, and uncomplicated sailor-inspired trousers for a touch of nautical.

Spring isn’t typically the time for loads of rich textures, but why conform to fashion’s norms? Victorian lace, heathered fringe, and fur bags were all on display.

It doesn’t get warm in NYC until May, thus half of the season is still spent in layers for the ultimate in transitional dressing. Cozy knits were at play here with flounce sleeve cuffs, sweater dresses that grazed the models’ calves, and form-fitting woven sleeveless numbers layered over shirtdresses.

We surprisingly had not seen a ton of celebs in the brand this year, that is until Kylie Jenner wore a Derek Lam skirt just last week. The collection’s flowy gowns might be too covered for the young fashionista, but we’re certain other stars will flock to the designs before year’s end.
