It’s been a year of designer shake-ups in fashion (but honestly isn’t that becoming the norm?).
Brands as simple and familiar as American Apparel or Abercrombie & Fitch have been revamped with new creative heads just like the luxury labels (think Balenciaga and Gucci). Though it seems like product production is at an all time high (seems may honestly be a light term to use), designers still have the onus of standing out amongst it all. Here are a few that have.
1. Olivier Rousteing of Balmain
No matter your opinions about his design aesthetic or business strategy, one must admit that Olivier Rousteing is a major part of the culture zeitgeist. Whether you chalk it up to his celebrity friends, bevy of social media followers (he’s the most followed fashion designer on Instagram) or the sex appeal of his designs, he’s definitely created a name for himself. So much so that one can quickly forget that Balmain is not the same size as brands that are thought to be it’s contemporaries like Givenchy and Valentino. Of course, it’s impossible to mention the brand and not acknowledge their well received H&M collaboration, which gave regular girls a chance to have a piece of their embellished pieces in their repertoires.
Everyone rom Nicki Minaj to Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez to the Kardashian/Jenner clan has worn a Balmain piece this year.
It’s easy to say that Balmain might have had the best year ever.
2. Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy
Though he had a somewhat crowning year in 2014, 2015 has been good to Riccardo Tisci as well. He made a sizable splash in September when he opened the gates of his New York-based fashion show to the public.
And don’t forget his multiple Vogue covers. It’s been the perfect year to follow up his 2014. At one point, after naming people like Victor Cruz as the face of the brand, he even got fellow designer Donatella Versace to pose in an ad campaign.
What we love about Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci is his commitment to diversity and pop culture. What other brands casts Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Victor Cruz and more in ads?
3. Laquan Smith
Sure, sometimes it’s about the big brands–but not all designers are behind Parisian-based houses. Queens-raised LaQuan Smith has been doing his own thing for years (we’ve been supporting of course) and this year, it seems everyone was taking notice.
Sure Kim Kardashian has taken to his sheer beauts and crop top and skirts sets (which caused insanity), but everyone from Beyonce to Jennifer Lopez to Rihanna has donned his wares before. It’s big news for a designer in his late 20s!
His eye catching, silhouette driven designs are sure to continue grabbing notice, well into 2016.
4. Alexander Wang of Alexander Wang and Balenciaga
Being a New York-based designer and being named to a major couture house is a hell of a big deal and that’s what happened to Alexander Wang. Though his role was short lived, the designer no doubt learned a lot from the role while trolling through archives and working hand-in-hand with the house’s couturiers.
Now having refocused his attentions solely on his namesake, it’ll be interesting to see what he has in store for the future.
5. Kanye West
This year we finally saw #YeezySeason in full. With fashion shows and his first Adidas line finally hitting stores, we got a chance to really see Ye’s design chops.
What we found? His strengths lie within the shoes that he creates that sell out release after release.
While Adidas has already announced they will not produce the next apparel line for the rapper, we doubt he’s going to slow down.
That does it!
What was your favorite designer/brand of 2015?
Happy Monday everyone! I hope all had wonderful holiday time and were able to spend some time relaxing with loved ones. Has anyone started their after Christmas shopping yet?
The time has come for us to discuss all those trends that hit online, Instagram and, of course, FashionBombDaily throughout 2015. Which looks should leap into the New Year with us and which ones need to stay at the door on December 31st?
Fringe
Everyone likes a little bit of fringe now and again, and celebrities definitely incorporated various types and amounts of the fabric into their outfits this year. We had already seen fringe follow us into the year from 2014, but who knew it was going to stay such a hit amongst the devotees? Whether it was just a little accent to an outfit or an entire theme, we saw all levels of fringe paired in different aesthetics.
Celebrities went for fringe-everything, including full-length skirts (also known as car-wash skirts), short minis, shoes and bags!
Even our Mama Bear, Claire Sulmers, supported the fringe look this year:
When done correctly, I definitely think we didn’t see so much car wash as much as Bombshell in the making! For trends, it has to be done tastefully, and even though some missed the mark, you can’t deny others hit it right on the head! I think one can never go wrong with a statement fringe, which is good for you to know, considering it doesn’t look like fringe is going anywhere for the new year.
I think we’ll keep this one for a while and see where it goes. What do you think?
2. Monochrome
Monochromatic styles play with a tonal palette of consistent color, amplified by tones and textures.
Monochromatic outfits were out and about all throughout 2014, and celebrities welcomed in 2015 with flavorful ensembles that used the same primary color in an assortment of different finishes, shades and textures.
Yes, I just gave you three times where Solange ace’d monochromatic looks back to back. I’m not mad!
Even our own Bombshell readers tackled Monochromatic looks throughout the year:
I’m more inclined to keep Monochrome because the versatility and the options are endless! I don’t think this trend is going anywhere, but what do you think?
3. Crop Tops/Skirt Sets:
We saw Crop Sets last year (and the year before that!), but this year’s take was slightly different. Instead of just the midi-skirt sets we saw in 2015, many celebrities opted for longer-grazing skirts. Yes, we still saw midis here and there, but the crop-set got an updated look with a little more….coverage?
I used to think the crop-top trend was exclusive to only certain girls with certain body shapes, but this year, celebrities revamped the trend to accommodate their bodies and personal needs, including longer-sleeves or lower-falling hemlines.
I loved the different fabrics used to create sets, and even how designers incorporated the trend in their attires for celebrities in more modest, but equally as chic ways.
Remember when Claire showed us an awesome crop-set that’s definitely every-day appropriate but can easily become high glam(with the fur trend)?
I think this trend offers a lot of versatility no matter the body type. Let’s take it with us into 2016!
4. Sheer DressesSome say less is more, while others say less is just less. We definitely saw less this year with the continuation of sheer dresses worn on red carpet events as well as street style.
The interesting thing about sheer dresses were we saw just how variable the fabrication could be: some dresses had simple cuts throughout the dress to promote a sheer underlay, while others were completely bare-all and definitely needed some undergarments to accompany. As someone who can be a little more body-conscious in certain garments, I wasn’t too much a fan of the super-sheerness of some outfits, although I commended the daringness to wear it! However, I would wear something with perhaps a sheer cut on the hem or even the arms?
The MET Gala featured a few celebrities incorporating sheer trends into the theme of the night, with both Beyonce and Kim K showing sheer in a new and interesting perspective (that has a lot of people still talking).
Sheer has definitely been overdone. Let’s leave it in 2015!
5. Athleisure
Last but certainly not least, we saw Athleisure take over everywhere. Pretty much, it’s workout clothing that’s nice enough to be worn through the day. We definitely saw that fabrics became nicer, cuts and forms got a lot more chic, and sneakers/legging combos definitely became a staple outfit for mid-day runs and weekend getaways.
We’ll also include the super comfy jersey’s that accompanies these looks as well as full-length sweatsuit combinations. This trend definitely wins an A in comfortability!I loved how celebrities tackled the trend in different ways, whether they were REALLY going to workout or hitting the red carpet with nothing but ease. Comfortable sneakers, panelled leggings, and comfortable jerseys or hoodies complimented every outfit and showed you don’t always need glam to look fabulous! I definitely think this is a trend that should stick around! Take it to 2016!
Well those are five trends that were definitely around for 2015. Which should we take into 2016 and which should we toss?
Kylie Jenner posed on Instagram during the Kardashian-Jenner holiday party in a Balmain Pre-Fall 2015 Green Embellished Fringe Dress, gifted to her by Olivier Rousteing:
Her dress was worn as a jacket in the brand’s Pre-Fall collection. It was paired with a long green top, rust-hued belt cinching the waist, rust pleated mini skirt, black tights, and patent cap toe, ankle-strap pumps.
Hot! Loved mom-ager Kris Jenner’s Balmain frock as well.
Her polished gold-tone metal sunglasses feature a bronze mirrored topline, the French fashion house’s etched logo at the temples, a geometric shape, and cutouts at the temple tips.
Chrissy wore the long-sleeve maxi wrap dress as a duster. It boasts a high-low hemline and long waist tie, in a diamond textured chiffon.
Her yellow and black cotton and silk-blend trousers feature an allover paint splatter motif, wide legs, and a self-tie waist.
Her Fall 2015 black leather crossbody bag showcases a snap-fastening front flap, polished gold hardware, and an adjustable strap.
Her black leather sandals feature buckle fastening straps and engraved gold beads.
Merry Christmas Bombers and Bombshells! While we wish we could give each of you a gift to show our appreciation, we will instead give you all the gift of Eric from Charlotte, NC, who was nominated by his friend, Camille. Check out his looks below:
You can see more of him on Instagram @thekelleyshow. I’m all for a tailored suit, blazer, bermuda shorts and loafers. Hot! What do you guys think of Eric?
