Many of us remember the outrage that sparked over Valentino’s decision of styling a largely white cast of models in cornrows. First, it was the 2015 lookbook and accompanying campaign that raised eyebrows; then, it was the “Africa” themed spring 2016 show where less than 10 black models walked the runway. Ideas and comments of cultural appropriation sparked fire on the Internet, where even celebrities cited their frustration with the brand’s decision to dismiss people’s frustration and continue to do what they wanted.
Well, once again Valentino has provided a collection and accompanying beauty looks of white models styled in non-European clothing and cultural looks, ironically shot in a Maasai village in Kenya’s National park. Guido Palau, the lead hairstylist for the spring 2016 campaign, explained that “the clothes have some tribal inspiration, so the hair has that feeling as well…It’s a bit influenced by the ’60s and ’70s when girls used to travel and they would bring back inspiration from other places and cultures, which is kind of an eclectic way of styling yourself.” (Vogue)
However, we’ve seen time and time again this idea of cultural appropriation of one culture versus another, or how one culture is glorified while another is criticized. Many publications have remarked on how Valentino is insensitive to exactly what it means to culturally appropriate, but it seems the ‘aesthetic’ of the brand is not changing anytime soon. How is it that fashion brands such as Valentino refuse to employ African or African-American models for runway, yet display them as a backdrop in the Spring 2016 campaign?
Discussions have been circulating between people who think these ads are awful and others who believe that powerful fashion brands can do whatever they want and that there is nothing wrong with one culture embodying another.
What do you think of the ads and where do you fall in the discussion?
Models.com taps Angolan model Maria Borges and South Sudanese model Ajak Deng to star in photoshoot featuring rising and established designers and brands that all have ties back to Africa, entitled Africa Rising. After traveling to Lagos Fashion Week last year, Models.com was inspired by the strong variety of talent they saw and wanted to showcase that talent in this shoot. Borges and Deng are the perfect choice to stand out among the vivid colors and unique fabrics of designers like Brother Vellies and Nomad Vintage NYC. Photographer Ed Singleton and stylist Solange Franklin created a striking shoot that allows the beauty of the clothes and the models to shine.
Check out the full shoot below to see the talent Africa has to offer!

She later linked up with friend Christina Milian, who rocked a denim jumpsuit and lace up sandals.
This picture has popped up of the friends. While many surmise they were kissing, it looks like they were about to hug, and the photog caught them midway.
Whitney writes, “I’m a huge fan of your site! Sorry to bother you and I know you guys receive ample emails but this photo is of the stylist Jai Nice that you featured on your site previously. If you can, please tell me at least the designer of her sunglasses.”
” I would really appreciate it. Thank You!”
Yep! We hit up Jai’s team, who divulged the online superstar looked flaw free in $225 Versace Black Butterfly Sunglasses :
Across the pond, celebs celebrated the European premiere of Creed. Expertly-tailored suits, embellishment, thigh-high slits, and leather were all on the menu.
Check out the night’s looks in 3…2…1…
Michael B. Jordan was dapper in Dolce & Gabbana. He can do no wrong in the style department!
Tessa Thompson went for full-on glam in a sequin Marc Jacobs gown with a thigh-high slit. Gorgeous.
Thandie Newton gave a pop of color to her black and white frock with red lips. Her Charlotte Olympia pumps weren’t my favorite pairing with the dress: a pair of black patent pointed-toe pumps would’ve been perfect here.
Plaid and dots played together in the accents to Ryan Coogler’s grey suit.
Fleur East flaunted her amazing curls and toned abs in a red long-sleeve, zipper accented crop top and high-waist trousers. Her pants needed a bit of hemming, but there’s no denying that she’s absolutely gorgeous.
Rap duo Krept and Konan looked cool in fur-collar jackets, black skinnies, and high-top kicks. I really like their style!
Footballer Andros Townsend and Hazel O’Sullivan were quite the good looking couple at the premiere.
Boxer Anthony Ogogo kept it cool and casual in tweed. He’s not bad to look at!

The events are nonstop in L.A. right now! Stella McCartney picked the City of Angels as the destination for her Autumn 2016 show. All her BFFs showed up and they just happen to be some of the world’s most stylish ladies.
Let’s see who was in attendance shall we?
Amandla Stenberg was pretty in pink in a ribbed blush polo and midi skirt, red lips, and navy lace-up wedges. She’s having a great year already!
The day after her birthday, Mary J. Blige was white hot in a one-shoulder jumpsuit. Werk Mary!
Nicole Richie debuted bangs and a 20’s-inspired blonde bob, clad in a shaggy grey fur coat, stripe LBD, ankle-strap pumps, and statement-making gold earrings. I live for her style.
A Stella McCartney floral print tie-neck frock was anchored with black strappy pumps on Chriselle Lim.
After her midriff-baring Globes look, Kate Hudson kept it surprisingly simple in a flirty LBD and matching pointed-toe pumps.
The lady of the evening posed with BFF Gwyneth Paltrow, with both in leg-baring little black dresses. The shoes were the thing here!
Clearly LBDs were the night’s biggest trends, with Demi Lovato slipping one on with a button-front.
It was all about prints and textures for Katy Perry in an olive velvet turban, $2,120 Stella McCartney Faux Fur Coat, a bold patterned dress, white Falabella clutch, and strappy sandals. There was a lot going on here, but she pulled it off!
Just last week, EssenceMagazine released their first ever ‘Black Girl Magic’ themed issue, filled with pages of beautiful Black women who are, obviously, giving us that #BlackGirlMagic in 2016. One of the well-chosen members of the Class of 2016 was the beautiful Teyonah Parris.
Some people may just be starting to see this beautiful face around town, but Teyonah Parris has been rippling waves for a period of time now. A graduate of the Julliard School, Parris is probably most known for her starting role in ‘Mad Men’, upon which she became the first African-American to play a starring role. She made her initial debut back in 2010 for her work onstage and on screen in the play A Free Man of Color and feature film How Do You Know.
Since Mad Men, Parris has gone on to create a dynamic career with a starring role in movies ‘Dear White People’ and Spike Lee’s ‘Chiraq’ (Note: She has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture).
Currently, she’s a series regular on the hit TV Show, Survivor’s Remorse, as well as working on some big projects this year: Parris is set to star as R&B/Jazz singer, Miki Howard in the upcoming biopic on her life, entitled The Miki Howard Story.
Aside from her accolades she’s garnering as an actress, Teyonah Harris is also a strong and outspoken advocate for the #NaturalHairMovement, where she’s shared on numerous occasions her hair story and transition from permed to fully natural and proud.
Nothing else we can say about this beautiful woman except that she’s a true inspiration for next generation of actresses, women of color in the media, natural girls, and just anyone wanting to possess that Black Girl Magic. So those are just a few reasons why she’s our Beauty Crush; is she yours?
