Show Review: Milly’s Fall 2016 Ready-to-Wear

Upon entering Pier 59 Studios, I was taken back by the chicness of the venue and the beauty of the set. The ceiling above the catwalk was (literally) dripping with blue flowing lights and the picturesque attendees just added to the overall sophistication of the show’s ambiance.

Aside from the 20 degree temps in these New York streets, Milly certainly brought the heat!

Founder and creative director Michelle Smith ‘s vision was consistent with previous Milly collections – she didn’t stray too far from the familiarity of minimal looks; however, this presentation paid homage to women everywhere who tend to cover themselves during these brutal winter months.

The designer’s goal was to create looks that combined both soft and sheer femininity with pieces that are ideal throughout the cooler months. Smith’s vision (simply known as “The Intimacy of Winter“) provided loads of sartorial inspiration which featured an impressive use of turtlenecks, two-piece swimsuits, bandeaus and even the timeless cocktail dress.

In addition to extensive layering and clean silhouettes, Smith also managed to incorporate a few “edgier” effects which included faux-fur trimmed handbags, statement sweaters and whimsical capes.

It was completely refreshing to see the models prance down the runway in frocks that the everyday woman could wear. I mean, each showcased piece serves as a firm foundation for any wardrobe and Milly did an amazing job of proving that winterizing your look can still be fun and unpredictable!

The use of dark yet bold florals also injected a bit of pizazz into the looks.

Honestly, I don’t know exactly what it was but I can actually see some of our street style favorites (think Julia Sarr-Jamois, Solange Knowles and Miranda Kerr) slaying in these looks! I believe it’s to mix of simplicity coupled with the genius styling that takes Milly’s fall collection to a completely different level.

Esmesha’s Life: New York Fashion Week 2016 featuring 5:31 Jerome Fall 2016, Alicia Quarles, Ty Hunter And More!

Happy Saturday everyone!

Well, I’m here in the Big Apple! Yep, finally made it out to good ‘ol New York! I wanted to give you a guys a quick glimpse into my first official day on Fashion Week which feature presentations from 5:31 Jerome, Milly and the epic Ty-Lite Launch Party.

I arrived at LaGuardia Airport around 4 PM on Thursday and deep within me there was a mix in excitement, anxiousness and even a little sprinkle of uncertainty but the combination of all these emotions just validated that my first trip to New York was long overdue!

IMG_20160211_082658

The first thing that hit me was the cold and the wind, lol. OMG! They both were just so disrespectful! I swear when I first stepped outside the airport I suitcase was tossed one way while my luggage flew in the opposite direction. 🙂 It was pure madness (and slightly hilarious). As a native Houstonian, winters under 50 degrees are practically unheard of but, Lord willing, I made it to my cab and I headed to Brooklyn.

After making it to Claire’s place, the settling in syndrome hit and so did my appetite. The rest of the evening was pretty laid back as well – I got to spend some time getting to know Jame while taking in a well-needed hour of Scandal (Yaaassss!).

So, my first official day of Fashion Week consisted of two shows: Milly and 5:31 Jerome. And, Milly was my inaugural New York Fashion Week presentation! The fashion house held its Fall/Winter 2016 show at Pier 59 Studios in Chelsea Piers and it was absolutely breathtaking. With an ultra-chic waterside vibe and an elegant appeal, Pier 59 Studios was the perfect balance for the modern sophistication of the show.

And, let me tell you, I took in EVERY moment! My initial thought was “Mama, I made it!” Lol!

IMAG0699

The sights, the sounds, the ambiance… there was truly nothing like it. While on the scene I ran into journalist Alicia Quarles and even got a chance to connect with a group of fellow bloggers.

After the Milly whirlwind, Jame and I indulged in a quick lunch before sprinting over to 5:31 Jerome for the final show of the day.

The 5:31 Jerome presentation was held at The Standard, High Line and it was the complete opposite of the Milly show. As a definite designer to watch, Jerome LaMaar’s Fall/Winter 2016 was beyond epic! His show gave me a little bit of the “Solange feel” (via her legendary wedding pics) with models standing in one place with fierce stares and flirty eyes. And, the ‘fits were even better – there were sequins and sparkles galore!

IMAG0718

IMAG0725

I also adored his innovative use of layering simple pieces (such as a graphic tee) with over-the-top flamboyance (i.e.- blinged out statement necklaces, ombre furs and razor sharp faux nails). Hands down, this has been my fave show thus far…

To round out the evening, Jame and I attended (Beyonce’s stylist) Ty Hunter’s Ty Lite Launch Party on Orchard.

IMAG0731

This event was filled with tons of star power including model extraordinaire Shaun Ross, Love and Hip Hop Atlanta‘s Ariane Davis and I even spotted former Bomb Blogger/Fashion Bombshell of the Year Tiffany Battle of The Werk Place!

30151

Even grabbed a #selfie with the Man of the Hour!

IMG_20160213_085331

We literally stood outside in 20 degree weather while waiting to get in but it was all worth it. The overall vibe of the party oozed a youthful and fun feel. The music was bangin’, the drinks were flowing… And, the fashionistas were playing NO games! It was definitely a night to remember. 🙂

Overall, my first day of New York Fashion Week was pretty amazing. Very memorable. Can’t wait to see what day 2 has in store!

I’ll keep you guys posted! In the meantime, follow me on Snapchat for more of my #NYFW adventures at EsmeshaCampbell!

Show Review: Yeezy Season 3

Fashion lines created by celebrities need to have an element of that star’s style baked into the designs in order to be successful: the classic glamour of Victoria Beckham and downtown cool of The Row are just a couple of successes that come to mind. Kanye West struggled in this area for quite a few seasons with his eponymous label, but it seems he’s caught his stride with Yeezy—his collaboration with Adidas Originals. Sporty, functional, and cool with high price points, the pieces are designs Kanye actually wears in real-time—an approach that has proven profitable for other star-backed brands.

West rattled the cage of the fashion industry by staging his Season 3 show at none other than Madison Square Garden: completely leaning on his prowess as one of the world’s biggest superstars. He also chose it as the platform for the listening party of his latest album, The Life of Pablo. Whether he’s referencing Pablo Picasso, Escobar, or Neruda is something we’re still uncertain of. And the audience for the presentation was just as momentous—a sold-out throng of 18K fans and supporters who were able to purchase tickets for the momentous event, opening up yet another show to the public as friend Riccardo Tisci did with his Givenchy show last season.

The man of the hour was clad in a graphic t-shirt with “I Feel Like Pablo” embroidery: one of the designs sold for $40 at merchandise stands and currently going for close to $200 on eBay. He partnered with Italian contemporary artist Vanessa Beecroft on outfitting over one thousand models as well as on the set—detailed with tents and feeling very The Walking Dead meets The Book of Eli. The duo were inspired by the current refugee crisis—a quite scalding and contradictory reference when compared with the high price Yeezy price points and his complete embrace of luxury and capitalism.

Athleisure, street-inspired silhouettes, and athletic elements were on the agenda yet again, though colors were a bit more punchy with shades of rust, mustard, yellow, and even a pair of turquoise boots making an appearance. There were also some heavy hitting supermodels in the lineup including Liya Kebede, Naomi Campbell, and Veronica Webb.

West also gave a sneak peek of his Only One video game, dedicated to his late mother Donda West. He also stated that he discussed his dream of becoming the Creative Director of Hermès for at least two seasons with Anna Wintour. It wouldn’t be a Yeezy event without a rant, right?

If the fashion industry was a table, West definitely shook it to his heart’s content. Will more brands take a cue from the designer-producer-mogul and stage their shows concert-style with booming music to boot? Only time will tell. For now, we’re just interested in the prices of the shoes and all the wares on display. And for The Life of Pablo release of course.

Kylie Jenner Adds a Nail Polish Collection to Her Beauty Brand

It’s no secret Kylie Jenner has had her eye on building a comprehensive beauty brand. It started with her lipstick line, Lipkit by Kylie, and now the reality star is planning on releasing a limited edition nail polish collection in early March.

Kylie Jenner Adds a Nail Polish Collection to Her Beauty Brand

The 20-piece nail collection, entitled King Kylie Collection, will be created in collaboration with beauty brand SinfulColors. It is the first of three collections with SinfulColors, and the other two will hit stores in April and May.

Each of the jewel tone shades will sell for $2.99, which is a dollar more than the other colors by SinfulColors but still less expensive than most major nail brands.  In addition, the polishes will include SinfulColors two-step faux gel formula. Expect to see tutorials on her app that will demonstate the versatility of the polishes.

Jenner is the first celebrity to collaborate with the inexpensive brand.

“We are glad the next product with her name on it is SinfulColors,” Rahul Mehrotra, the brand’s general manager told WWD. “We think that this collaboration will energize the nail category by driving Millennial traffic to the store.”

Jenner’s website recently reflected her beauty brand expansion by changing it’s name from “Kylie Lipkit” to “Kylie Cosmetics”. What do you think will be the next beauty project that King Kylie will conquer?

Jame’s Life: BCBG Max Azria Fall 2016 with June Ambrose, Jay Manuel and More!

Hey everyone!

So Fashion Week definitely started off with a bang (and not a whisper) as editors, photographers, and all of the fashion elite headed to The Arc off West 33rd Street to catch one of the first shows of the season, BCBG. Needless to say, I was extremely excited when I touched down in New York and was ready to hit the ground running for the first show for my first ever Fashion Week!Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Day-1-BCBG-6Then after about 5 minutes of standing outside in the cold weather that has taken over the city, my face turned into this.Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Day-1-BCBG-2Nonetheless, it was game time when we walked into the door. Truly an awesome event, BCBG started off with lots of street photographers snapping photos, Press check-ins and finding seats. Thankfully everyone huddled in quickly and I was able to find my seat amidst other bloggers and press! BCBGMAXAZRIA: Fall 2016 Runway ShowMy view was pretty amazing, but the swarms of photographers over the celebrities were a lot to handle! Trust me when they say a show during NYFW never starts on time (I don’t think the show started for another half hour after it was slated for). But nobody seemed to mind the waiting: People were too busy taking selfies of themselves…or photos of who they thought someone else was.Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Recap-Day-1The show was definitely centered around the idea of an ‘artistic’ muse; whimsical yet very intentional with her style of dress. As someone who loves color and shimmer, I enjoyed looking down the runway and backstage at the latest collection’s signature looks, clad in rich colors, textures, palettes and material.

BCBGMAXAZRIA: Fall 2016 Runway ShowBCBGMAXAZRIA: Fall 2016 Runway ShowBCBGMAXAZRIA: Fall 2016 Runway ShowThe real fun began after the show when the lights came fully up and I got to see who was sitting front row! With all those Hollywood Starlets and Starlettos in the same building as me, you KNOW I had to grab a selfie with someone!Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Recap-Day-1-Jay-ManuelAlthough a bit blurry, you can clearly see I was all grins when I caught my selfie with Mr. Jay Manuel himself, who was quickly heading out the door to catch a flight to Toronto! He had on a Dsquared2 blue shirt, Paul Smith patchwork suit, and that stunner olive green Gucci coat. Hot!Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Recap-Day-1-June-AmbroseBefore I popped out, I saw June Ambrose cracking jokes with some friends of hers, so I hopped on the opportunity for a chance to speak! We grabbed a quick shot, and she was decked out in a Helem Yarmak fox coat, Azzedine Alaia heels, Faith Connexion blouse, and of course, a Chanel bag with a Fendi keychain. Ya’ll know she looked good!

Lubov Azria, Max AzriaThe Azria’s caught a pretty epic #Squad pose with some of the models after the curtains closed, celebrating what definitely was a job well done on the collection and show!Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Day-1-BCBG-3As for me, I hung out in the waiting area where amongst champagne, security and a ton of photographers, I got to grab some amazingly dressed people and talk to them about their thoughts of the show, what they’re favorite thing about BCBG is, why they love FashionBombDaily so much, you know…the usual.

Jame-Jackson-NYFW-Day-1-BCBG-5All in all, I have to say it was a pretty successful First Day of Fashion Week. Aside from the temperatures, I didn’t get trampled, suffer from too much celebrity-spotlighting, and got to see an amazing collection I am bound to save some coins for! Make sure you stay tuned here on FashionBombDaily as I shell out my day-to-day recaps on all you need to know about Fashion Week. Off to my next event!

Rumor Mill: Balmain Reportedly Looking to Sell

Right when Balmain was becoming a household name for those outside of the French fashion world, it seems things are perhaps getting a little rocky for Rousteing and his crew.

Reportedly, the heirs of Alain Hivelin (who was the chairman and majority owner of Balmain) have decided to give up control of the brand, French newspaper Les Echos reported Thursday.

Kendall-Jenner-Hot-in-Black-olivier-rousteing-gigi-hadid-parisAccording to the report, the family has been working with an investment bank for the buying of the company, looking at roughly 300-400 million dollars worth in value. If the sale goes through, the relatives of the family (who own the remaining 30 percent stake in the company) will also be advised to sell their shares. French, British and Asian investors have reportedly expressed interest.

olivier The-Sunday-Times-Style-Andrea-Klarin-08Since 2011 after the appointment of Olivier Rousteing as creative director, the historic fashion house — founded by eponymous designer Pierre Balmain in 1945 — has risen to prominence due to tactile connections to high-profile celebrities such as the Kardashians and social media presence as Olivier as the “everyday, common man” living a fashionable man’s dream.

What do you think of the reports of Balmain’s sale?
