Hey everyone! So sorry I couldn’t post my recaps the night of, but my life has been on 100 for the past three days straight.

Now that I’m back home, I’ll combine the events of Tuesday and Wednesday together for you! So after a long night of shows and getting home super late (the inevitable happened and I got lost on the train at 1 am), I woke up Tuesday morning to Grammy footage needing to be covered on the site. So while I’m on the East Coast writing show reviews for Fashion Week, we’re also tackling outfit details over on the West Coast! Talk about a strong team!

 

Needless to say, I was exhausted from the day before and made it a day of working on online content before heading to our first ever FashionBombDaily x CCW initiative with Shop Jesse Queen.  I thought to myself, Claire would be here soon, everything would go perfect, life would be swell.

Ha!

The phone rings. Claire’s flights been delayed and I’ve been tasked with some errands to run before the event. Okay…*breathes deeply* Game time.

After running errands throughout the day, I headed into the city to the venue to make sure everything was going well before showtime. Sam met me there, and with nowhere to get dressed, I hid in the bathroom. I attempted to put makeup on with the lighting, which was EXTREMELY bad (the fact I even looked decent and not like a clown is nothing short of miraculous folks).

A few hours in, we got word that Mama Claire was in the house, so we definitely got the party started! June Ambrose, Tyson Beckford, Ty Hunter and so many more came out to show love to the collection, which I personally enjoyed viewing as the pieces were versatile and quite timeless. Ty was gracious enough to provide Ty-Lites for the models throughout the night, so I was able to photo of them all using their light for a photo. Now I definitely need one!

So many of you guys recognized me and came and chatted it up with me, which I definitely appreciated! I was happy I could talk about Fashionbombdaily, being an all-hands-on intern (one of you called me Andy from The Devil Wears Prada, but I can assure you, Claire is not a Miranda Priestly) and pursuing dreams and aspirations both in media and in editorial. You guys are actually awesome and the love was amazing!

The night ended with some time spent out on the town, catching up with Claire and dining with friends for my last official night in New York. I have to say, I won’t miss the weather but I will miss the food…

One would THINK that’d be the end of the work, but oh would they be wrong! Wednesday morning I woke up bright and early, gathering my last minute items before heading out to two fashion shows back to back. Naeem Khan and Mohapatra both took place at Moynihan Station off 33rd street, and it was fascinating to see the juxtaposition of the two designers. I definitely loved them both. Personally, Khan took it home for me, as his collection had a lot of golds, embellishments and color, so it’s right up my alley! Also, this year they partnered with the Make-A-Wish foundation, so a young lady was able to live out her fashion dreams and walk the runway with him! I was literally in tears. In the spirit of the collection, I opted for this Indian-inspired brown dress I had, with cream lace trimming around the edges and burnt orange embellishments. I kept it relaxed with matching orange earrings and kept my hair up in a bun after snagging random locs the day before with my purse. Ouch!

After my shows, Claire let me know she was speaking on a panel over on Broadway, so I decided to tag along. Not only was she bomb, but the other panelists were able to also speak to the changing world of media, blogging and social media presence. I think I can say everyone walked away with new knowledge of some sort (and isn’t that the whole point?).

All in all, I’m so happy about NYFW which taught me about so much more than just fashion on the runway. Aside from the fact many of you now have a face to my name, I learned how vital things such as hard work, tenacity, and perseverance are to the things you want in life. To be entrusted with such a huge task as New York Fashion Week is something I never took lightly, but I enjoyed every single moment of it and was glad to share it with you.

Jewelry is a crucial part of any fashion show: whether a designer chooses to include baubles or not is a huge statement. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but the jewelry choices on the runway are as varied as the designs on display: we saw Jeremy Scott collaborate with Alexis Bittar on lucite pieces for the season for instance. Well, Bibhu Mohapatra went for full-on glamour for Fall 2016—no surprise as the brand’s pieces are spotted on the red carpet at least monthly. The ears, wrists, and necks of the models shimmered and sparkled with pieces from Forevermark:

Forevermark jewelers from Mohapatra’s native India created the stunning diamond designs. The collection was inspired by the last Chinese empress, “Dragon Lady” Cixi. That influence rendered itself in floral patterns set against rich autumnal hues, dragonfly embroidery, and more.

“I chose Forevermark to accessorize the models in my Fall 2016 Runway show at NYFW because of the inherent beauty and rarity of Forevermark diamonds,” says Mohapatra. He continues, “We had several dozen gorgeous diamond pieces sent to the US from Forevermark India. The ornate style of the jewelry fit perfectly with the theme of my collection, which is inspired by the legendary Chinese ‘Dragon Lady’ Empress Cixi. Also, Forevermark diamonds are responsibly sourced, meaning they give back to the communities where they come from, which is incredibly important to me. In fact, I have designed a collection exclusively with Forevermark, set to launch in India later this year.”

We’re definitely looking forward to Mohapatra’s collection with the brand this Fall!

Thoughts on the pieces?

In today’s perilous landscape of brand survival, it is critical for designers to either disrupt themselves from a design perspective or to succeed by consistently staying in their lane. Calvin Klein is one such example of the latter. In his Fall 2016 RTW collection, Calvin Klein focused on the clean, minimalist aesthetic that has maintained his brand for decades.

With strong suiting, structured vests trimmed with fur, and fitted leather coats, Calvin Klein demonstrated that women still want to feel powerful in their dressing, albeit a bit more comfortably. The color palette was restricted to navy, black, white, and variations of animal skins with a few 3D ornamentations to boot.

The sophistication was ever-present as wide legged pants glided effortlessly on the runway and skirts sashayed below the knee with panache. Most models were largely covered-up, save for tiny circular cutouts with wood at the waist. A few pieces that were fully covered in the front were often open in the backs. A great deal of sex appeal was embraced without revealing too much skin.

This collection was all about the details. Fun elements included super furry gloves and metal de-constructed bags with pops of brightly colored fur. Subtle pinstripes defined sleek blazers and coordinating pants. The belts cinching each model were uncomplicated in a good way and the leather dresses swung as if made of silk.

There was an ode of sorts to nature – in the most obvious sense, the excessive use of fur, but also in the animal inspired materials and in the found objects (stones, wood) that were incorporated into the pieces. The presentation excelled in staying true to its brand identity and we couldn’t be more pleased.

NYFW is coming to a close, but there are a ton of stylish looks to get through from the week’s shows! Functional knits, on-trend culottes, sultry dresses, and statement-making pumps were just a small portion of the pieces worn.

Let’s see what the celebs wore!

Solange Knowles was spotted front row at Baja East’s Fall 2016 show in an icy blue turtleneck from the brand and brown leather culottes. I live for her style!

At Zimmermann’s Fall 2016 catwalk, Serayah donned a strappy cutout dress from the brand and strappy pointed-toe pumps. This was fab.

Victoria Beckham was spotted out and about in the Big Apple in Winter-perfect printed separates. She never has an off-day!

A fur shawl, black textured coat, quilted Chanel bag, and black suede thigh-high boots were on the agenda for Tamar Braxton while leaving NBC Studios. Cute no?

Naya Rivera was suited up at the Christian Siriano Fall 2016 show in an expertly-tailored black suit. She’s been killing this NYFW!

Kris Jenner partied at Hunt & Fish Club with boyfriend Corey Gamble in a glamorous fur, LBD, black tights, and embellished sandals.

Daughter Kendall was not far behind, sporting her favorite Givenchy fur tote, a floor-grazing grey coat, little pink dress, and white pumps. She’s always on point!

Karrueche Tran was spotted at the Laquan Smith Fall presentation in a printed jumpsuit and blush pink coat. Stunning.

A black bowler hat, beige coat, black belted dress, and gold heeled loafers were on the menu for June Ambrose while she stomped the NYC streets during NYFW. This is her element!

It was all about vintage for Dascha Polanco at the 2016 Writer’s Guild Awards in a throwback velvet Patricia Field dress and a retro-inspired ‘do.

Ashley Madekwe served up a flash of midriff in a long-sleeve crop top and high-waist pencil skirt at the Christian Siriano show. Her style is flawless.

Full-on glamour was channeled by Ashanti at the 2016 MusiCares Person of the Year Event honoring Lionel Richie. Hot!

Closing out the week were Gary Clark Jr. and Corinne Bailey Rae at the concert. Corinne’s printed dress and Sophia Webster sandals were darling.

Naeem Khan’s latest presentation for Fall 2016 was one to behold, with sequins and bedazzlement gliding on every look down the runway. With metallic beaded gowns, tunics and expertly tailored after-5 attire, the collection offered a wide variety of styling options for any viable fashionista.While some looks offered a metallic look, other dresses remained matte yet popped of color; reds and blacks glided down the runway, expertly stitched and cut to evoke a sense of femininity while not subtracting from the quality of the fabric and design. Plunging necklines offered seductiveness in a modest way, yet models remained covered in flirty and feminine ways.Khan played with both texture and print, constructing dresses with tulle underskirts that created body and height. He also offered selections with floral appliques and patterned fabric made to appear like velvet or silk.Inspired by Art Deco—specifically the architecture you see on the streets and skyline of New York City, the collection bolstered metallic beading and intricate design-work.

The collection was multi-varied, eclectic and diversified with selections that spanned all avenues of fashion and select style.
