Fashion News: Ariana Grande Tapped as the New Face of Lipsy

Pop starlet Ariana Grande has been dubbed the new face of the British women’s line Lipsy! The 22-year old actress/singer is also set to debut her own Spring collection on March 2nd. According to WWD, this is the performer’s first break into fashion.

Grande’s 20-piece collection will include a variety of seasonal essentials including skirt sets, party dresses and loads of accessories.

And, the price points aren’t too heavy either – the pieces start at $46. In addition, the collection will be sold online via the official Lipsy website.

Although this is her inaugural fashion partnership, this isn’t her first time teaming up with another influential brand. Late last year, the beauty also collaborated with MAC Cosmetics for their Viva La Glam Campaign. I’m sure 2016 will be an amazing year for this young woman.

Olivier Rousteing Designs New Balmain Pieces For Kim Kardashian’s App

Well, it seems the worlds are colliding, with Creative Director of Balmain, Olivier Rousteing, designing all-new looks exclusively for Kim Kardashian’s famous mobile game, “Kim Kardashian: Hollywood.”

Understand these are not pieces that have already been in past collections of Balmain; while there may be a few pieces from the previous season’s collection, Rousteing creates brand-new pieces exclusively for the site, according to a report from WWD.

If you want your digital styleitte to wear these pieces by the covetable powerhouse, you can pay an actual monetary price or trade in your K-stars: for example, some pieces include a fringed handbag and pair of earrings, which can cost you $14.99, or if you’re an avid KKH gamer, 105 K-stars.

While some people may think a fashion designer’s collaboration with an app is silly or superfluous, it seems the numbers are in favor of Rousteing: within Balmain’s first month of participation in “Kim Kardashian: Hollywood,” WWD reports that 200,000 players “owned” a piece from the French fashion house and 2.2 million players visited the label’s official website. So even if people aren’t owning the real thing, the name and brand are definitely circulating to all of Kim Kardashian’s passionate and avid followers.

Happy Wednesday, folks!
To say life has been busy would be an understatement!
These past few days have seen me hosting brunches for Ciroc, filming ‘mercials for Colgate Optic White (I’m a member of their Designer Smile Squad!), twirling on Black History specials for BET, and participating in tapings for Upscale Magazine/Centric’s 16 Black Women to Watch in 2016 (!). But before all of that, I was invited to Paris by the Ministry of Tourism and the Promosalons trade shows to discover another side of the French fashion industry.

I, along with a contingent of American, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese journalists and digital influencers were welcomed to the city of style and light to tour trade shows like Who’s Next, Bijorhca, and Maison et Objet. Each promosalons showcases thousands of burgeoning designers in lingerie, home, fashion, accessories, jewelry, and more.



While our first few days were filled to the gills with trade shows, we took a luxurious turn on day 3, touring the ateliers of historic French houses like Hermes, jewelry powerhouse Mellerio dits Meller, and chandelier company DeLisle.


While I’m moreso accustomed to twirling in Paris for Fashion Week, it was certainly cool to go behind the scenes a bit and see how France nurtures both their emerging designers and their heritage brands.

It was fabulous and I can’t wait to go back for Paris Fashion Week in March.

New York Men’s Fashion Week Dispatch: An Interview with Designer Donrad Duncan on His Engineered For Motion Fall 2016 Collection and His FGI Rising Star in Menswear Award

Fashion week has been crazy busy and it’s only day 2 — not to mention the fact that New York Fashion Week for womenswear starts in only a few days. But on Tuesday’s schedule, in addition to popping by the Public School Fall 2016 show (see our review here), we made it a point to see shows by other designers of color like Donrad Duncan’s Engineered for Motion. While there, we got a moment to pull the designer aside and ask him a few questions.

(Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images for EFM)Founded in 2014, the premise behind EFM is pretty straightforward: “I wanted to create a product that’s no nonsense, no color, lightweight, I can put it on and jump on my bike and go to the studio or another creative environment, or go out for the evening and not have to change,” according to Duncan. That mission is echoed by many brands that have been adding technical components to their fashion brands, but few to the precision and appeal that Duncan does.  The aesthetic lends itself to pieces like smart, water resistant jackets that are casual enough to wear out for a night in Brooklyn, can be elevated to a night at the opera via its removable fur collar (below).

Other pieces include rain-read slickers, suits that have the comfort of pajamas but the durability and elasticity of track pants as well as a variety of performance knits. Its a robust, but focused collection that the designer just recently presented to buyers at MRket in New York, prior to picking up an award from Fashioin Group International. “It’s been very busy of course because you’re being pulled in so many directions and you have to be present for everything,” Duncan said of the hectic moment. “There’s a lot that’s happening — right now I’m already thinking about Spring 2017.”

But the FGI Rising Star in Menswear award did come with significance for the designer. “You know that was an amazing experience, one with just getting the publicity from that.” Duncan explained. “[Two], it’s not easy winning an award. Also, knowing that it’s an organization started by women  — Eleanor Roosevelt was a part of it — and that men are now being included in it is great. I think it’s a very positive thing for me to be acknowledged by them.” The creative took the award as a representative for his entire brand which includes a head designer that he works closely with and about four others in the studio. “We’re small but because everyone is so experienced with what they are doing, the flow is very efficient.”

For the near future, Duncan is looking for more recognition. “I just want to just grow and for the audience to acknowledge this product exists,” the designer said when asked about his plans for 2016. “Specifically I want to get into specialty retailers — retailers that really understand what this is. You know, potentialy doing retail stores, but the focus is really doing specialty retailers.Currently the brand is in stores like CHCM in New York, Alvedon in Beverly Hills and Martin Patrick in Minneapolis. Their new head of sales for the company said that appointments for fall look good for key launches in the coming months.
