In a recent sit-down with Vogue, supermodel Naomi Campbell dished out her top 5 beauty hacks! The 45-year old stunner admitted to a few simple routines while completely denying the possibility of any potential (or past) face lifts.
A few weeks ago, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that they were making some groundbreaking changes to New York Fashion Week. In addition, we’re all aware of how influential the CFDA is when it comes to helping aspiring fashion talent. So, the organization’s next move should come as no surprise!
With Cadillac serving as a proud partner, the CFDA recently announced their new venture simply known as Retail Lab. Retail Lab is aimed towards granting up-an-coming designers with their own temporary retail stores.
According to Vogue, “the initiative will allow six designers to install a custom retail pop-up shop on the ground floor of Cadillac’s global headquarters in New York City, at 330 Hudson Street, for a three-month period each. In addition to the space, Cadillac will provide a $75,000 grant to each participating designer to cover the costs of displays, marketing, and wholesale buys“.
The CFDA is confident that this type of program will give designers a unique chance to work directly with consumers while diving deep into the world of visual merchandising and interior design. Some of the program’s advisory board includes revered fashion veterans such as Reed Krakoff, Julie Gilhart and Simon Doonan. The inaugural “lab” is set to launch in July with designer Timo Weiland as the lucky first pick.
Cadillac has agreed to a three-year commitment with the CFDA; therefore, opening the door to countless designers to gain experience within running a brick-and-mortar business. Other candidates who are interested in this program can apply for the remaining spots on the CFDA’s website here.
“The CFDA is always looking for meaningful programs that help strengthen the impact of American fashion,” expresses CFDA President Steven Kolb. “Every designer aspires to a freestanding retail experience that allows them to tell their brand story and connect directly with consumers. Cadillac’s commitment to the industry will help the selected designers make this a reality.”
I believe this is a wonderful opportunity! And, a great move for the CFDA.
I love Danai Gurrira for so many reasons, there’s no way I could focus on just one. After being honored at last night’s Black Girls Rock Awards on BET, I decided to delve into her accolades just so you guys can see why she’s our Beauty Crush!
With beautiful, rich chocolate skin and a full embracement of her natural hair, it’s evident how Danai is PHYSICALLY beautiful (I mean, look at her). However, we love to feature people who are also doing things for OTHERS; undeniably, Gurira is changing her environment one narrative and opportunity at a time.
Aside from being a representation of the various tones of melanin that can be portrayed in film and media (she’s known for her character on The Walking Dead and had an action doll made in her honor), Danai has also created active spaces for African-American actresses to thrive by being a playwright that focuses on producing roles for women of color. Her recent project, Eclipse, also features Lupita Nyong’o and tackles the politics and social concepts of norms in the Black and African community. A powerhouse in her own right, Danai Gurira shows young women of all ages to never silence your voice but to explore and present the authentic representation of yourself, your culture and community!
In previous interviews, she’s summed up her mission statement with simply, “I want to see other people fly. Let’s find five amazing actresses and give them an opportunity to do their thing, which unfortunately doesn’t happen very often for women of African descent. A big part of my creative mandate is to create those opportunities.” Beautifully said.
These are but a few reasons why Danai Gurira is our Beauty Crush Wednesday! So tell us, is she yours?
They say history repeats itself, right? We’re throwin’ it back to the 1990’s when chokers were in style. We posted about our faves showing off their neck candy on the Fab List. If you’re curious about how to the rock the trend, then you’ll love today’s Bomb Product of the Day, Nasty Gal’s $25 Nikki Mix Chain Choker:
The mixed layer design features a silver box chain, silver snake chain and a gunmetal link chain with an adjustable back lobster-clasp closure.
The Nikki Mix Chain Choker is a very modern take on the retro trend.
You can purchase here. What do you think? How would you rock it?
Alessandro Michele has been showing men’s and women’s pieces on each Gucci runway since he was named as the brands creative director in 2015. Now, the designer has announced beginning in 2017, the Italian label will officially combine their shows and only host one runway presentation per season.
“It seems only natural to me to present my men’s and women’s collections together. It’s the way I see the world today,” Alessandro Michele said in a statement. “It will not necessarily be an easy path and will certainly present some challenges, but I believe it will give me the chance to move towards a different kind of approach to my story telling.“The news isn’t novel: earlier this year Burberry and Vetements made similar announcements. Michele’s move parts from theirs in that Gucci will not be adopting the “see now, buy now,” format that his contemporaries are moving towards.
The decision to continue showing six months ahead of pieces going in stores keeps Gucci in step with the consensus of the Italian and French fashion industries. While New York brands are forcing immediacy, international fashion weeks disagree. “New York has always been the land of branding and marketing. We and France, we are more the area of creativity and manufacturing,” honorary chairman of the Italian fashion chamber Mario Boselli said in a statement to the Associated Press. “I think the logic is different. They follow their interest, we follow ours.”
Even stateside some designers have shown dissent from the straight to consumer model. CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund 2015 nominee Chris Gelinas posed some poignant questions at his most recent show. “Why?! I haven’t had a reaction yet; I haven’t seen what people think,” he told the Observer about possibly switching formats “My clients haven’t said ‘I love this, maybe that’s not for me.’ You know, [the whole collection] can’t all be hits, you’re lucky if in one season you have a couple pieces that clients go crazy for.”
The points were valid in that the six month waiting period typically serves as a time for editing and incubation of the collection’s ideas. Without that designers could make the wrong decisions about which designs to produce for mass consumption.
What do you think? Should more labels put their collections available for purchase right after showing? And is it relevant any longer for brands to separate their ranges for women and men.
