Before a lot of female entertainers, DJs and the likes of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna or even Queen Bey, Lil Kim was making serious sartorial statements for women in the hip hop industry. Though controversial and typically titillating, there’s no denying that Kimberly Denise Jones carved out a niche as a 90’s era fashion and style icon, trendsetting her way via avant-garde dressing, skin tight bustiers, and (the infamous) pasty-affirmation for every woman out there. Lil’ Kim not only pushed the boundaries of what fashion was, but also made it accessible and influential to the general population by way of her luxury designer laden, statement-making lyrics. Remember when she said:
YA’LL ROCK VERSACE AND YA’LL WENT OUT AND BOUGHT IT/ I ROCK VERSACE AND YA’LL KNOW I AIN’T PAY FOR IT!
Yeah…Lil’ Kim was one of the original rap stars, known for ostentatiously citing designer labels in songs.
Her style is still seen in the outfits of some of Hip-Hop and Pop’s most notable artists, including:
Rihanna who has definitely cited Lil’ Kim as a style and fashion icon and inspiration.
Miley Cyrus who tried out Kim’s infamous pasty/sequin look from the 1999 VMAs.
And Nicki Minaj, whose Harajuku Barbie aesthetic was undoubtedly inspired by Kim.
Outside of performances and appearances, celebrities have of course given their own ode to Kim during holidays, including Karrueche who rocked her look for Halloween.
Though racy and oft criticized, Lil Kim showed women of the 90’s and beyond that it was ok to embrace their sexuality and flaunt their form even in the most shocking of ways. Kim made it ok to be totally unapologetic when it came to sensual style expression.

Today, we’ve got HeyBlackGirl’s ”Black Girls On Another Level’ T Shirt:HeyBlackGirl is actually a brand I discovered way back when on Twitter, and when they dropped their T-shirts with admirable quotes from some of the women at Black Girls Rock! I couldn’t help but tell myself I had to feature them!If you’ve never heard of HeyBlackGirl, I’m not sure where you’ve been. They’re a movement and shop that’s geared toward loving and learning to love being a Black woman. Promoting sisterhood, self love and positivity, they offer a wide variety of T-shirts and other paraphernalia that offers inspirational quotes, ideas and mantras for every sista’ out there!Aside from Rihanna’s “All Girls Rock Black girls…we just on another level” T-shirt, they also have crop tops with the beautiful words of Beverly Bond (the founder of Black Girls Rock!) and Amandla Stenberg, who had my favorite quote of the night by far.
Of course, they also offer other T-shirts, including their infamous one with the name of the brand and mantra that’s put them on the map. My favorite thing about this brand is their tireless effort to push and support our community. We all possess this magic about us, but rocking it on a T-shirt just amps it even more!

The stars were out at the Barbershop: The Next Cut Hollywood Premiere—especially as there are so many celebs in the cast! On-trend cutout detailing, expertly-tailored suits, black leather, and more were on display.

Nicki Minaj wore a $1,563 Balmain One Shoulder Cutaway Side Dress and lace-up sandals for the night. This was one sharp move away from a wardrobe malfunction, but definitely a hot look.
Vivica A. Fox accented a timeless black leather Versace dress with new purple hair and black pumps from the iconic Italian fashion house. She’s never looked better!
Eve was suited up in Alexander McQueen. She’s back and I love it!
Jasmine Tookes was pretty in pink at the Montblanc 110 Year Anniversary Gala Dinner in a The 2nd Skin Co Fall 2015 Blush Long Sleeve Slit Gown:
Jasmine swapped in a simple, skinnier belt in contrast with the runway’s mirror version. She also chose simple ankle-strap sandals in place of the catwalk’s feather-accented pumps.
Gabby also chatted with the cast about curvy style, online shopping, and her collaboration with Swimsuits For All.
On curvy fashions from past to present:
“Really, it was so matronly and for older women. I was a teenager when I started to love fashion and then was so disappointed with the options. So, to see how far we’ve come has been really amazing.”
On online shopping:
“Obviously, it’s still tough—even now for me to go into a mall and find something I love. I do a lot of my shopping online and things are slowly, but surely, getting better.”
On her Swimsuits For All Collaboration:
“It’s been amazing because I really been passionate about it and swimwear options were kind of the last frontier. They were so matronly, a lot of skirted suits and for those of us who are more confident and who do want to show off our bodies, there were so few things out there for us so I’m so honored to have helped to start the movement to see plus size girls in bikinis.”
