Jourdan Dunn looked completely glamorous during the premiere of ‘The Unknown Girl’ during Cannes Film Festival in a Ralph & Russo S/S 2016 White Ball Gown:
The white silk gazar ball gown features pale blue lining and hand painted floral design, embellished with crystal and glass bead 3D petals. The high-low dress has a long, extravagant train.
Jourdan opted for a pair of metallic blue sandals and accessorized with diamond earrings.
The back of Jourdan’s dress was the highlight of the red carpet. The exaggerated train created a bold, dramatic effect.
I’m not a huge fan of her shoe choice but the over all look is a hit for me!
Nadia Napreychikov and Cami James of cult brand Di$count Univer$e are known for their outrageous designs that are beloved by the industry’s boldest stars including Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga. And in case you were wondering whether or not they’re as cool as their statement-making pieces, the duo currently live in Bali, but are working on relocating to the Big Apple—pretty much most women’s dream whether they love fashion or not. Their latest collection for Resort 2017 was right in line with their signature aesthetic: bold prints, function juxtaposed with fantasy, embellishment, and vibrant hues.
We live in a social media-obsessed age and platforms like Instagram and Snapchat have truly changed the fashion industry: some celebs are now sporting looks exclusively for their followers that they don’t always wear to actual events or for a night out. And these are definitely digital friendly clothes—by that we mean designs you can post on IG and garner tons of likes. Case in point: Kylie Jenner in one of the brand’s bikinis at Coachella, which brought in a cool 1.6 million likes.
Fun fact: Katy Perry actually discovered Di$count Univer$e through Instagram! And the duo is using these mediums to really expand the traditional notion of the fashion industry. The balance of power is shifting from the style elite to the consumer and social influencer. And when you’re sporting pieces like thigh-high, multicolor embellished boots and sheer graphic catsuits, perhaps fashion’s big wigs will throw you some shade, but this daring and fearless generation of head turners certainly will not. This is Anna dello Russo on steroids: minimalism simply does not live here.
And Napreychikov and James are bucking the system with some of the most wide-ranging price points in the industry to date. A brand loyalist can get everything from a $29 bucket hat to a $1,299 velvet slip dress: there’s truly something for everyone. They’re even making most of the just-debuted Resort pieces available for purchase here—clearly they’re down with the see-now, buy-now movement that is turning the age-old seasonal fashion model on its head.
This season is the brand’s first runway show at Fashion Week, which is a great feat considering that many brands all over the globe are foregoing catwalk presentations. We’ll definitely be seeing these pieces on stars this Summer: a cobalt blue studded jacket worn backwards screamed Rihanna and a pair of embellished denim seemed to be right up Gaga’s alley.
What do you think of Di$count Univer$e’s Resort collection?
For a dash of humility, hustle, and honesty, get to know Allure Accessories Director Nicole Chapoteau in our latest Breaking Into Fashion interview.
Hudson Valley Native Nicole “always had a love of architecture, but fashion was always in [my] body.” After attending NYU in New York with a degree in African-American History, Urban Design and Architecture, and a minor in French (#talented), Nicole took a role at an architecture firm for two years, learning the ropes of graphic design and architecture. Always at work and with long hours at the office, Nicole realized that “this [role] was not for [her].” A sobering experience witnessing 9/11 caused Nicole to leave New York to take the time to determine what she truly loved and wanted to do with her career.
After a brief hiatus, she began taking classes at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology in Merchandising with a game plan to enter the fashion industry. Along the way she worked an internship at Marie Claire while still taking courses at FIT. At the end of her summer, the role for Assistant Accessories Editor opened up. Simultaneously, Nicole received an offer to join the prestigious buying program at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Texas. At a career crossroads yet again, Nicole opted for Marie Claire and eventually moved to Allure as Associate Accessories Editor, InStyle as Accessories Editor, and back to Allure to join as Accessories Director.
Her career advice: “You have to do what you love. We spend most of our lives at work…so if you’re not doing something that you’re passionate about, you’re just going through the motions.” She continued, “your age isn’t important… it is what you put into it. This is an industry that is very age-driven, but if people see your drive, you can learn…you will make sacrifices.” For those looking to transition into fashion, Nicole shared, “you need to put a plan in place, get savings in order, figure out a schedule and follow your dreams.”
With such an influential position at Allure, I wanted to get Nicole’s take on mentorship. She is an avid supporter of other editors of color and listed a whole array of men and women she is influenced and inspired by, including Samira Nasr, Robin Givhan, Edward Enninful, Paul Cavaco, Shiona Turini, Rajni Jacques, Nikki Ogunnaike, Elaine Welteroth, Danielle Prescod, and more! She highlighted the importance of “find[ing] your crew in this industry that can motivate you;” she “tries to know [of] every editor of color as [there are] not a lot of us!”
For her beauty routine, Nicole “has worn [her] hair natural since the 90s” and claims “mascara, blush, and bronzer will go so far to brighten [her] up” when getting her family ready at 6:45 am. I admire her beauty philosophy of starting from the inside-out; what she consumes and puts on her skin and hair are of vital importance to her, especially as a mother of two daughters. Beauty faves for Nicole include: Mielle Organics, Camille Rose Naturals, and Oyin Handmade.
When asked about #blackgirlmagic, she offered, “I was raised by women of color – my mom, my grandmother, and my aunts were strong women who instilled in [me] that [I] could do anything. I grew up in a small town and I was [one of few] black girls. I am teaching [my] daughters that because of our culture, whether the Caribbean, the Americas or abroad, people of color have gone through so much…that we can overcome anything. We have this special glimmer we can put on everything, we are what makes it amazing.”
My final question for Nicole, what would she do with $20 on a Saturday in New York City, New York? Her answer: “I would take [our] car into the city [from Queens] and go to Dough in Bed Stuy to get these donuts that are LIFE! They are $2-something each and we will buy 4 doughnuts: my husband gets 1, I get 1, my [oldest] daughter gets 1, and my husband and I will split the 4th one. After, we’ll go to this coffee shop to get coffee.” Sounds like a super Saturday! If you want to learn more about Allure, check it out here and follow @Allure and Nicole on Instagram!
Australian Fashion Week is underway and Emma Mulholland’s Resort 2017 collection was truly out of this world. It was all about intergalactic motifs and alien-laden designs—fun and playful pieces that were definitely made with street style snaps and Instagram posts in mind.
The assortment was brimming with glitter and sequins and gave an undeniable nod to Star Trek, as well as the late David Bowie’s iconic alter ego Ziggy Stardust. A model in a club-perfect, pink and silver embellished jumpsuit with a face adorned with glitter gave the Vulcan salute at the end of the catwalk—a topical choice given the fact that the saga’s next film hits theaters in July.
Accessories were just as funky and standout as the clothing: metallic, platform boots, alien antennae-inspired headbands, retro-inspired shades, and colorblock shoulder bags. Wigs were aplenty and overflowed with color.
This is fashion for the daredevil who likes to have fun with her style: the only thing the Emma Mulholland girl takes seriously is enjoying herself and her clothing. Fresh, eccentric, unique—we definitely have our eyes on the brand. And three years after its Australian Fashion Week debut, we think Mulholland’s star is poised to shine even brighter in the seasons to come.

One of my favorite mediums for finding new content is Youtube! But, as an avid Youtube AND beauty junkie, I constantly find myself dismayed by the constant lack of brown girls in beauty circles on Youtube. A few years back, I stumbled on one Youtuber, however, who has since blossomed in more ways than one: Jackie Aina. Jackie Aina is not only a beautiful woman of color on the outside, but she radiates warmth and personality in every video she makes. Not only does she make you feel at home, but she uses her expertise to teach you about skincare, current products that are worth the splurge, proper makeup applications and everyday makeup hacks to look flawless every time!A Youtuber with over 700k subscribers (I was following Jackie back when she had only 35k), Jackie is now a woman who can be seen working with big brands like Loreal, spotted on the video channels of Refinery29, be a Youtube Change Ambassador (working for women’s and minority rights) and just constantly being a fresh face in the world of beauty. She can show you how to make your makeup work for you, that brown girls don’t have to shy away from bright colors, and how to FIX YOUR LIFE while offering insight form the things she’s learned. I have definitely learned a thing or two from Jackie, even if it’s just to be relentlessly fearless in my goals and aspirations as a woman of color in this industry. Some of my favorite videos of Jackie have included her How To guide for color correcting (which can definitely get tricky when you’re browner hued):
Her video on beauty trends we NEEDED to ditch in 2015 (and I promise you, I literally laughed till I cried first time I saw this):
And even just her everyday makeup tutorials, where she shows you how to replicate celebrity looks. Here, she recreated Rihanna’s flawless makeup look from Black Girls Rock 2016:
Perhaps you’ll join her Youtube sisterhood and get on board the Jackie Aina train! Check out her Youtube channel: JackieAina. So that’s why this beauty is our Beauty Crush Wednesday. Is she yours?
