Hey!

So Chris Rock recently produed a documentary called “Good Hair” after his daughter asked him innocently, “Daddy, Why don’t I have good hair?”:

Chris Rock Good Hair

The documentary explores the complex relationship women of color have with their locks–whether they’re rocking a weave, afro, or micro mini braids. It also interviews Hollywood starlets like Meagan Good, Nia Long, and Raven Symone to talk about the types of hair styles they choose, and why. Looks like it’ll be an interesting film!
I’m sure we all have our own hair histories! I recently shared mine with the website Black Girl Long Hair. Check it out here.

  1. im glad he is doing this…im of a different persuasion than most black women i know. i have always been taught that there was no such thing as “good hair” based on the slave ass term that most black people use. hell, my hair is long, jet black, healthy and real…that’s as good as it gets!!! im not a kanye fan, but i love the line in his song where he says something along the lines of they made us love their wealth and hate ourself…im black and love every aspect of it!!!

  2. I agree with Ebony, I totally think that movie should’ve been done years ago and this issue be talked about from years to come. I was taught that good hair was healthy hair no matter what grade it is. Its sad that some women categorize good hair with length and look and if you have long hair and you claim to be black that can’t be the case because “black people dont have long hair, so therefore you must be mixed”. I also would like to see the word “nappy” disappear, “nappy” hair is just tightly curled. Those close minded ladies need to get it together.

  3. Also I would like to add that its sad that the lady is doing 2 things wrong in the first pic

    1)She is not wearing gloves
2)Looks as if she is about to overlap that relaxer

I wouldnt let her touch my head.

  5. I love to see girls with big natural curls. Some of my family members and friends have gone natural and they love it. I would love to go natural one day, but it takes a lot of time and effort that I don’t have right now! I plan to do it in the near future, though.

  6. I hate to say it, but I am over this conversation. Call me a killjoy, but I don’t think things will change (i.e. meaning people will just accept healthy hair a good hair). There is too much stacked against it. I will see the documentary though.

  7. I agree with Pinkflame. This topic is old and no one will agree. However the men in this interview…make me arch a brow cause some of these men are lying. They want you to have long hair, but it has to be real. They want you have real hair, but it has to look straight and tame or curly wavvy. Or if your hair is short and \nappy\ they say get a relaxer and a weave. I just hope this documentary is positive and isn’t a bashing session about the black woman.

  9. Thank God someone is speaking out about this and I’m glad it’s a black man. This has been a topic amongst ladies but I feel that once a BLACK man speaks out on it, it will draw a different audience to the subject. I’m with Jadakiss…I hope it is a positive approach to the issue.

  10. I disagree with the word “nappy” being negative.

When I say “nappy”, I am fully embracing the fact that I will NEVER have long, flaxen locks and that my hair will be tightly locked/curled. There is nothing “weird” about having braids or a short afro, and I make certain people don’t get this “touchy–feely” thing going just because it looks “different” to them.

Nappy hair means not being ashamed of flaunting what the Creator gave you. I’m a child of the 1970’s and the women I consider icons were the women who were/are proud to sport their cornrows, afros and locs in public spaces. I find author Toni Morrison’s wisdom locs incredibly lovely.

If anything I am disheartened by the lack of black fashion and hair magazines which prominently feature natural hairstyles and hair care. I live in L.A. and it was a serious search to find even THREE hair salons which cater to and specialize in natural hair. I don’t hate those black women who choose to straighten their hair because a lot of times it’s less about politics and more about choice. Sometimes the personal–like hair–isn’t political. But we need to understand and reject the attitude behind the false “good hair vs. nappy hair” construct.

    On a good
