Naomi, Liya, and Iman cover Essence’s 40th Anniversary Issue

    by Claire

Trailblazing supermodels Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, and Iman cover Essence’s 40th Anniversary Issue:

The collector’s edition will do double duty as the magazine’s weighty September Fall Fashion issue, and will feature the first official spreads by Essence’s controversial fashion director, Elliana Placas.
Though it’s unknown if Elliana styled the cover, the fashion pages will undoubtedly receive lots of attention. Another thing to look forward to: an open letter by Michelle Obama to black women.
Will you be picking up Essence’s September Issue?

Vogue Italia Says Black Beauties Deserve Their Own Spotlight

    by Claire

Vogue Italia recently wrote a blog defending their decision to launch black stylista focused site, Vogue Black. They said, “Finally, two years on from the publication of A Black Issue, surrounded by Eastern European models, we ask ourselves: how long will it take before we see more black beauties on the runway? As summarized by Afrobella in her blog,  they deserve their own spotlight.”

I have no problem with Vogue Black’s site, but comments on our Facebook page reveal Fashion Bombers do!  Reader Mary said, “That’s cool and all but why does it have to be Vogue Black..why can’t Vogue just acknowledge black and keep it pushing!! Accept us for what we are don’t categorize!” Barbara added, ” Why does Vogue need a Black section and a separate Editor-at-Large simply for the Black section? Why aren’t the Black models good enough to be integrated in the main magazine and on the main cover..?”

I can see how many of you view this as an empty victory. Industries are strongest when integrated, and this separation underscores our systematic exclusion and lets mainstream magazines off the diversity hook. Still, I applaud Vogue for acknowledging the legions of stylish black women and men who love fashion but can’t find themselves in most magazines. We can kind of think of Vogue Black as a renewed Suede, this time around with amazing resources and established relationships with industry greats like Steven Meisel and Naomi Campbell.

    What do you think?

Vanity Fair’s New Hollywood Cover : The Debate on Race and Magazines

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!
So I was out all day prepping for an event, but came home to a serious internet debate over Vanity Fair’s most recent New Hollywood cover:

Writer Joanna Douglas (who I interned with back in the day) wrote an article on Yahoo’s Shine site, remarking that the cover featured actresses who were, “extremely thin and very, very white.” She continued, “We can think of a slew of non-white, non-rail thin actors who made a splash this year (Gabourey Sidibe from “Precious” anyone?)…Roles for black, Asian, and Latin actors are scarce in Hollywood, but surely Sidibe, Zoe Saldana of “Avatar” and “Star Trek,” and Freida Pinto of “Slumdog Millionaire” are having their moment. Vanity Fair may have been looking for the most promising batch of talent for their issue, but they should have been looking for a diverse group of women as well.”
Over 18,000 people responded, most maintaining that Vanity Fair is a white magazine, and that all black publications and networks are also guilty of playing in the non diversity game. Commenter Amber summed up the general sentiment, saying, “Why is it when there is all white people on the cover, the magazine is being racist, but, when there are no white people involved, you can’t say anything? Isn’t this called double standards and I get pretty tired of seeing that.”

Magazines like Essence and Latina were created because national publications historically ignored and devalued the contributions of African-Americans, Asians, and Latinos.  Very concentrated niche groups set out to make magazines that spoke to them about the issues, stars, and news that mattered to them.

While a few crossover stars like Beyonce and Rihanna can land the covers of mainstream mags like Vogue and Glamour, a seasoned actress like Gabrielle Union might not have it so easy. While we all loved Gabby in “Daddy’s Little Girls” and “Deliver us from Eva,” the larger American population might not be familiar with those films. Still, Gabrielle is talented, beautiful, and well liked, so of course, magazines like Essence have to give her the shine a broader magazine might not.

The problem occurs when mainstream magazines like Vanity Fair, that supposedly cater to a diverse audience, systematically ignore a large percentage of its readership. On its website, Vanity Fair says, “From world affairs to entertainment, business to fashion, crime to society, Vanity Fair is a cultural catalyst that drives the popular dialogue globally.” Essence never claimed to be for every person. On its website, Essence says it’s about, “Black Hairstyles, Black Women, Celebrity Photos, Entertainment News, Celebrity Gossip.”

Vanity Fair can claim to be about whatever it wants to be. If they want to just focus on socialites (as they typically do), then they should change their mission statement to say, “All about fashion, politics, and entertainment for the rich, white, and well heeled.” If you’re going to be exclusive, then claim it! But don’t say you’re about a global discourse and popular culture, then publish a magazine that totally lacks a global, popular outlook. Global implies diversity and also an honest acknowledgment of what truly constitutes popular culture. As Douglas said, Gabourey Sidibe is certainly making a splash and is a popular subject in the public discourse.

It’s fine to have your magazine be about whatever you want it to be! The Fashion Bomb was always about urban fashion; if urban fashion isn’t for you, then you are certainly free to find a site that is geared towards a general audience. But if you’re global, be global, and if you claim to cater to everyone, then do it! It is your duty. And if you’re not. Stop fooling yourself.

    What do you guys think?

The Fashion Bomb Remembers: Suede Magazine

    by Claire

“There is a frustration in what we do…In a sense, there is not a road, not a path, that we go down… We can’t just sell the magazine. We have to sell the audience. We have to explain that our audience buys things, that they are valuable. It’s just plain dollars and sense.”– Michelle Ebanks, group publisher at Essence Communications Group, in a New York Times article dated December 7th, 2004.

    Hi ladies,
Today The Fashion Bomb presents a tribute to Suede Magazine.

    tyra-suede

To be honest, I didn’t really pay attention to Suede when it popped in on newsstands with its colorful covers and brown hued beauties. I believe I flipped through the premiere issue with Alicia Keys on the cover…

…remarked at how a few spreads gave me a mild headache…

…then sort of forgot about it.

I’m kicking myself for being so apathetic about it…One of my homies over at Essence recently showed me a few issues and I instantly fell in love with the eye catching beauty spreads…

    Innovative fashion shoots…

And engaging art, historical, and political features…

Yes, that’s an article about Barack Obama before his presidential bid!

    Suede displayed everything from sunglasses…

    to contributors…

    to letters to the editor…

…in eye catching and inventive ways.

Plus, it seems Suede was the place to go for style addicts like myself…

I mean, we’re talking about ankle boots now, but Suede featured booties back in 2005!

I love me some Essence, and the young Vibe Vixen is certainly growing on me. But, for us brown skinned ladies who moonlight as fashionistas, I loved Suede’s multiple fashion spreads featuring women who look like me….one issue of Suede had about 5 spreads! Vogue only has 2, maybe 3. (Perhaps it was those expensive shoots, though, that drained Suede’s bank account.)

Regardless of the reasons it closed its doors, I believe I speak for many women when I ask ‘Where for art thou, Suede?’
    What do y’all think?
    Smootches!

PS A Women’s Wear Daily article by Marc Karimzadeh reports today that designer Stephen Burrows, who I wrote about here, will premiere a new daytime line at a lower price. The article says, “he new dresses [will] wholesale from $125 to $195, compared with $225 to $880 for the evening line. At the lower price points, the new pieces are likely to sit with Nanette Lepore, Tracy Reese, and Diane Von Furstenberg at specialty stores.” The piece goes on to say that the line, “Will open to the market on Feb. 7th for fall distribution.” Unfortunately what the piece DOESN’T SAY is WHERE WE CAN BUY this new line. What good is a lower price point if noone can find it??? Updates to come!
