This Week in Chic: Mychael Knight, Ashanti, Jessica Alba & more!

    by Vuitton

This week’s almost done, Fashion Bombers.  But we had to give you a little something to get the weekend started in the right direction.  A bevy of stars came out this week for movie premieres and award shows, dressed to the nines undoubtedly.

My faves this week?  Well, Nia Long and Tamera Mowry look nothing short of stunning.  They chose the right colors for their skin tone, and their makeup looks so natural.  Mychael Knight (designer from Project Runway MANY seasons ago), looks dapper in his gray suit.  I would’ve never thought to pair the suit with a white shoe, and it actually works!  May have to try it out one day.

Who rocked it this week for you?

How to Take Care of Your Hair for Workouts and Swimming

    by Danielle

Starting a new heavy duty workout routine and don’t know what to do with your hair? Or if you’re trying to get your right stroke, left stroke on and have no clue how to keep cute outside the pool, read on!

Three things are your enemy if you lead an active lifestyle: the salt from your sweat, salt from seawater, and chlorine from pools. All three are very drying on the hair and eventually excessively dry hair, if left untreated, will break.

To try and salvage your hair from a strenuous workout, you can try wrapping it, putting it into a loose bun, or go 80s style with a sweatband prior to getting sweaty. Your best bet is with a protective or low-maintenance hairstyle. We’ll get into that a bit later on.

After a sweaty workout, it’s ideal to cleanse the scalp to rid it of pore-clogging salt and dirt. But here’s where you have to pay close attention to your hair. Some people can get away with only cleansing 2-3 times a week or just once while others have to cleanse after every workout. For some, shampoo can be way too drying as it strips the hair of its natural oils and will instead go for a low or no pH shampoo. Others will nix the shampoo altogether and will co-wash (cleansing the hair with conditioner instead of shampoo). And then for some too many co-washes leave the hair too limp and it breaks off.

Sheesh—can a girl have some hair on her head?

Yes—but you have to “listen” to your hair and look for signs of moisture and protein deficiency.

Quick tip: if your hair feels mushy when wet and a simple tug leaves some strands in your fist—may be time for some protein (just don’t overdo it or it can cause damage); and if your hair feels hard and when wet snaps back and then breaks—bring on the moisture!

If you’re a swimmer, you want to get the chlorine before it gets you. Do this by wetting the hair and adding a little conditioner to it even if you wear a swim cap. The hair has a certain level of porosity and once it’s saturated, it’s harder for anything else like pesky chlorine to get in. After your swim you still want to properly rinse your hair of any traces of chlorine.

Follow up with a clarifying shampoo every month or so as needed to rid the hair of product buildup.

The easiest way to successfully keep up with your workouts and swimming is to have a low-key hairdo whether you’re relaxed, natural, or wearing a weave or wig. Having to whip out curling irons, flat irons, and other heat appliances is just too time consuming and can wreck havoc on your hair. Plus, it’s summer! Low-key hairdos are the way to go.

Hair tips for natural hair: You have an advantage over other hairstyles since many of your regular routines involve wetting the hair anyway. Twist-outs, braid-outs, and coil-outs are great styling options for varying lengths of natural hair.

If you wear locs or braids it’s a good idea to secure your hair so that you don’t have it pulling at your edges depending on how vigorous your workout is and how long your hair is. Gather the hair loosely at the crown and as an option, secure with a silk or satin scarf.

    A few hairstyle ideas:

Hair tips for relaxed hair: Wet sets are simple easy ways to style your hair if you workout in the evening or have some time to kill while your hair dries. You can also do braid-outs or straw curls for an easy and cute texture-transforming ‘do. Or try a protective style like a loose bun or loose braids. If you go to a salon, try to schedule your appointment on and near your off days so you can enjoy some wear of your style.

If you have short hair, a wet wrap after a workout works if you time it right. What’s great about a wet wrap (where you wrap your wet hair around your head, secure it with a silk or satin scarf, and let it air dry) is that most times you won’t need to run a flat or curling iron through your hair after you comb the wrap out. Invest in some stylish hair accessories if you have “longer” short hair to keep your hair off your face.

    A few hairstyle ideas:

Hair tips for weaves and wigs: If you’re pretty active and wear weaves, you might want to consider going with a more wet and wavy or wash-n-go texture. This way if you have to wet your hair, it won’t take a team of stylists to get your weave back on course. Also pay special attention to your real hair. The ideal time to keep a weave in is six to eight weeks according to celebrity stylist Kim Kimble.

If you wear a wig, you may find it so much easier to have a cute ‘do and an active lifestyle. It’s true but you want to make sure you take care of your real hair. Don’t get your braids too tight and be sure to cleanse your own hair to rid it of salt, dirt, and/or chlorine.

    A few hairstyle ideas:

Weekend Beauty Hot! or Hmm…: The BET Awards, ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards, and More

    by Danielle

    Happy Monday, Fashion Bombshells!

Hope you all had FABULOUS weekends. Mine was spent oversleeping and makeup shopping on Saturday, Toy Story 3 on Sunday, and ending it all with watching the BET Awards with one of my best friends I’ve known since kindergarten. A great time was had by all…lol.

Before we get into the good, the bad, and the ugly of the hair and makeup seen on celebs this past weekend, can we get a round of applause for BET making up for the atrocity that was the BET Awards 2009. I see they are on the come up. #abouttime

Now hold on tight—this one is jam-packed with Beauty Hot! or Hmm…s. Brace yourselves!

Before the show, many celebs were spotted at pre-show parties. Michelle Williams of “The Color Purple” and Destiny’s Child fame was spotted at one showing off her nail design. I’m loving how good her skin looks her (not looking at the pimples on her forehead—it’s summer! We all get them) and her haircut is too cute. Hot!

Also at the same pre-show event was singer Amerie also showing off her new nail design. Is it just me or does she look like 5 years younger? I’m loving her new cut (though I can’t tell if it’s a true cut or if she just tucked her hair in) and her skin looks great, too. All around cute look. Hot!

Actress Lauren London tweeted some pics of her with Letoya Luckett and Toya (of Tiny & Toya fame) at one of the BET pre-show events. I miss seeing Lauren on the red carpet because she always looks so good. Glad to see her out. I’m loving all of the ladies hair and makeup here especially Toya’s super cute bob. Hot!

Rapper Trina also stepped out at the pre-show festivities looking all fresh faced and pretty. The jury is still out on her ponytail though. I mean, it doesn’t look bad but it’s also reminding me of 1997. I’ll let you all duke it out.

Video vixen turned rapper Angel Lola Luv was also getting her pre-show on. And I don’t believe I have enough time in this segment to break down EVERYTHING that went wrong here, but I’ll give it a try. We know celebs are always in a rush, but to add a touch more glue on your lashes to make sure they’re secured couldn’t take that long, right? And the too light, too thick concealer under her eyes? And the lipstick???? At least her brows look nice. Hmm… (think I need a choir to belt out that Hmm…)

Jumping over to the 23rd Annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards and we have singer Dondria. Gorgeous smile, pretty hair, and nice skin. But seems like her makeup artist must have been having a going out of business kit sale or something because it looks like every product in that kit was used on Dondria’s face. Sure, I love the look of a brow bone highlight done in concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your skin, but this is overboard. Ditto the smoky eye—wish it wasn’t so geometrical. There’s also too much blush here. Perhaps this look is a Monet #cluelessspeak. Hmm…

Also at the ASCAP Awards was Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton. Her brows are killer, but the too-light under eye concealer in conjunction with the light peach lips takes away from her pretty face. Also not loving the hair. You’re better than this, Melody! Hmm…

Singer Janelle Monae also made an appearance at the ASCAP Awards. Her skin is perfection! I’m loving her brows—super thick and super groomed at the same time. The blush and lips paired with the spiky lashes look great on her. I’m a bit Hmm…-ish about the undereye concealer but everything else looks so good I’ll let it pass. Love her hair. Hot!

And now for the BET Awards! The Game star Tia Mowry hit the red carpet. Her hair looks cute, but the eye makeup is too overpowering for her thin brows and lashes. I would “thicken” the brows with MAC Brow Pencil and give her some fluffier lashes or just tone down the eyeshadow.

I swear I just said that Taraji P. Henson rarely has a bad hair day, didn’t I? Well, seems like she was jinked because this here hair? No thanks. Perhaps if it was either that length with a different texture or that texture with a longer length. Her makeup looks good though.

Rapper Nicki Minaj took home the Best Female Rap Artist award last night and true to form she came decked out in brights. The wig is a stage prop so I have no commentary on it, but I’m loving the green shadow paired with the hot pink lip (but is that brown liner around it? please say no).

I cannot believe Nia Long is about to turn 40 this year. Her skin and hair are flawless as usual and I love the subtle green liner under her eyes. Hot!

If boxing was a sure guarantee that I could look this good, I would already have my hands tapped up with some gloves. Laila Ali looks so good here! Nice subtle smoky eye, pretty bouncy curls, and nude lip. TKO. Hot!

I love that Jada Pinkett stepped out in braids on the red carpet, but I’m not in love with these braids. Her skin is glowing as per usual and the bright red lip pops against her bronze skin. Beautiful touch with the gold shadow in the corners of her eyes.

No way this is Holly Robinson Peete. She was my girl since 21 Jump Street and Hanging with Mr. Cooper and I believe someone is impersonating her here. I can’t believe the cakey foundation and eyeshadow and the haphazard wig. Someone call the NAACP. Hmm…

Eva Marcille practically glowed on the red carpet. I love her hair and even though it looks a bit thick, I love her makeup. Hot!

Ashanti is so cute. She’s rocking this smoky eye/pink lip look. I just wish her foundation was blended more along her hair line. Cute ‘do, too.

Ciara took a Ride on over to the awards. Her body is on point! I’m sitting her sweating just thinking about the workouts she must do to keep herself so toned. Love her understated makeup and loose curls. Hot!

Mama-to-be Alicia Keys rocked a hot pink lip color and bronzed skin. Somehow she didn’t look so orange when I saw her on TV and I didn’t notice she had on orange eyeshadow. Not so sure about that combo, but she’s glowing. Awww.

And last but certainly not least, host of the evening Queen Latifah brought the house down with her outfit changes paying homage to the span of her career. I like this one the best because it’s the Queen I remember. Give it to ‘em, Queen! Hot!

Well, if you made it this far, what do you think of this weekend’s looks? Tell me in the comments ;)

This Week in Chic: Joy Bryant, Tolulah Adeyemi, Juelz Santana and more!

    by Vuitton

This week, the stars and celebutantes came out for premieres, events and parties.  From L.A. to London, there seemed to be no shortage of style.

My faves this week?  I’m really diggin’ Juelz’s Gucci blazer from their Fall ‘10 collection.  The red polka-dots keep things festive for his birthday.  Mr. Jay looks very polished and put together.  Simplicity went a long way for him.

Who rocked it this week for you?
