• Style Inspiration: What to Wear to the AfroPunk Festival

Candace R. writes, “Can you do a post on what to weart to the Afro Punk Festival in Brooklyn. I’m going and well I want to look like I belong.”

Hey, Candace! Funny enough, I was supposed to attend this festival last year. However, Mother Nature was not seeing it for this event (remember Hurricane Irene?).

At any rate, while researching what the scene typically looks like, I noticed a strong sense of personal style with hints of African influences.
The first look is for the bold.

I’m living, I mean, living for this Thakoon Addition ikat-print jersey maxi dress. It is everything. Since the dress does a lot of talking, you should aim to keep the rest of the ensemble muted. A set of bracelets will work great with simple button earrings. How fly are those Stella McCartney shades? They add the perfect finish to the ‘fit.

For the next look I chose a pair of  embroidered denim cutoffs from Topshop.

The busy pattern on the shorts should encourage you to go neutral on the top; a look that can be achieved with a basic white tee. To add a little fun I incorporated a neon cross body bag from ASOS that’s currently on sale for $40. You can keep your feet nice and comfy with a pair of brown strappy flat sandals. Don’t forget a mean pair of shades (I’m currently digging this pair), and a vibrant mani.

Look 3 features a pair of Current/Elliot leopard print skinny jeans that I paired with a cobalt blue top.

I wanted a piece of jewelry that would make a statement, and decided to choose this  Belle Noel Mini Dagger Collar Necklace. Go for a darker pair of shades, and a pair of black peep toe wedges. A yellow manicure complements the blue top and adds extra fun.

I was also able to find some street style images from a previous Afro-Punk Festival over at Essence.com. Get some extra inspiration from these looks.
