Reader Need Help! writes, “My BF and I are going to be attending a fashion event soon (which includes a runway show) in support of a friend of ours, and, while we have decent everyday style, we are by far ‘out of our element’ in attending such a stylish event. Can you post some looks for couples attending a fashion event, that’s not over the top, so that we can fit in as a stylish couple? Perhaps something that looks unified without being corny or matchy-matchy. Thanks!”
I’ll do my best!
The key to dressing cute for couples who want to look effortlessly chic (but somewhat unified) is to pick the same general color scheme or fabric elements, but add your own twist.
Look number 1 skews casual with the guy in a black leather jacket, and his lady in a complementary leather skirt:
Show you’re both hip to what’s hot in ‘matching’ Givenchy cotton tops: the guy in the brand’s Black Shark Print Tee, and the girl in their Skeleton Print Gold Stud Tank in White. Set both outfits off with *hot* shoes. Accessorize to taste:
[If you like, take the matching factor to the next level with the lady in a denim jacket]
If you want to go for slightly more dressy, mix and match a suit for the guys. For this look, I opted for a slim fit burgundy blazer by Carven and brown Rake Prince of Wales straight pocket trousers, funkdafied with a patterned tie, and smart looking readers:
If you’d like to complement your boo, slip on a top in a similar shade, like this Vivienne Westwood Better Knot Blouse. Ooze femininity in a close fit pencil skirt, and complete with Christian Louboutin spiked heels:
[Note: guys, I think you could get away with a brown or black shoe, just depends on what you like]
For the last look, I went uber dressy, with a gray sharkskin wool suit and black shoes, uplifted by a pink button down and striped tie:
For ladies, I played off his look with a pink Antonio Berardi dress that picks up on the pink and striped elements of the guy’s shirt and tie. Complete with classic pumps:
The options above are expensive, but only meant to inspire (and you can sub in your own interpretation for any of the pieces displayed).
For further inspiration, take cues from one of Hollywood’s most fashionable couples, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith:
