The Versace woman is many things, though sexiness is something that runs through her DNA, touching all of her facets. That chameleon-like quality starts when she’s a bit younger, which for Donatella Versace is captured in the Italian fashion house’s Versus line. For the label’s latest Fall 2014 collection, she riffed on its signatures from baroque prints to form-fitting mini dresses.
Where Versace can sometimes go over board, Versus grounds itself in function which was quite refreshing here. There was a strong menswear-inspired vibe that pervaded through the lineup with a focus on tailoring. Slim-cut coats had contrast collars and flap pockets, while suiting was cut to a T. Leather peep-toe, platform booties rounded out the women’s looks with a feminine, yet tough edge.
Structured tailoring gave way to a sporty chic moment with varsity jackets and leather trainers for the gents. A fur bomber for the ladies will certainly be a big retail hit for the season.
Athletic-inspired was followed by the label’s signature prints: covering everything from flared-skirt frocks to its timeless patterned button-front shirts. I can already see a barrage of rappers clamoring to get their hands on the pieces.
Leather ended the offerings with a bang, albeit tamed. The pieces out of the bunch in the edgy texture were the best investments (one can never go wrong with a biker jacket you know?), but I was surprised that Donatella didn’t up the ante and go for silhouettes that were a bit more daring.
